Wigan Athletic - also known as the Latics - is a professional football club, playing in the English Premier League. Having been promoted to the Premier League in the 2005-2006 season, they surprised everyone by staying in the top half of the Premiership throughout the season.

Having only narrowly escaped relegation in their second season in the Premier League - by beating rivals Sheffield United in the last game of the season - they have never won any domestic or European titles or competitions.

Wigan Athletics' home games are played at the JJB Stadium, a modern 25,000 seater stadium, officially opened in august 1999.

The owner of the club is local millionaire, David Whelan, who also owns the local Rugby League club and the JJB Stadium. He is the former owner of JJB Sport, one of the leading sports retailers in the UK, and a company he practically built from scratch. The club has progressed from strength to strength since he bought it in 1995.

Wigan Athletic manager is Steve Bruce, who took over the manager position in November 2007 to start his second spell as manager of the club.  As an active player he will be remembered mostly for playing for Manchester United, and being the best central defender never to play for England.

The team captain is Mario Melchiot, a Dutch international defender, who joined the club in the summer of 2007 from French side Rennes. He has previously played in the Premier League for Chelsea FC and Birmingham City.

The key players in the team is: Chris Kirkland (GK), Paul Scharner (D), Jason Koumas (M) and Emile Heskey (F).

About FootieFan

There is nothing like a good game of football! Doesn't matter if you're in it or not.

I love the game, particularly the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League - so I decided to build a number of Squidoo lenses around this.

I hope you'll enjoy!
