How to Lose Weight with the Wii
I've updated this lens to acknowledge that I'm still using the Wii, including the Wii Fit, as part of my regular exercise program, and I have also added other Wii games to my repertoire as variety helps a lot when using any exercise program. An advantage of this is that the later games included Wii updates for the Wii Fit.
My main exercise is still walking and I consistently add in Wii Fit, Just Dance and Your Shape. I've continued with walking as my focus for the ongoing lifestyle change weight loss and maintenance requires. I've recently started a Walking to Lose Weight fan page.

I was intrigued and ignorant before I got my own Wii Fit. Now I love it, and would like you to as well! It's a lot of fun with heaps of practical and effective advice. It will suit the whole family and still maintains your privacy on those delicate issues of weight and fitness. This is an adjunct to other ways of keeping fit and losing pounds. An immense support in an ongoing weight loss program. Since I've invested in Just Dance! during the post-Christmas sales I am planning on using this extensively as part of my exercise program. The other advantage of the Wii is the entertainment value-the kids really enjoyed getting active with the Wii!
Warning: keep your sense of humour! Do not let sensitivity to weight and BMI or age estimates stop you enjoying a really sensational weight loss tool. When you start out sometimes the Wii's comments are hurtful...or funny depending how you look at it. He (the Wii trainer) told me that my age was 74 years which it isn't by a lot, but the next time round on the same fitness test I was 45-closer!
As you get started and need to become familiar with how it works, you might like to do it privately, unless you can be light hearted about the initial comments. You can also choose not to take the fitness test until you feel more confident.
I didn't understand how to do an exercise first time round, and was told I was too frail to do this particular one. Not true!!
A friend who had a go with me one time was insulted and refused to go back into the program. Fortunately for me I have been able to keep my sense of humour.
As I continue with Wii Fit these types of remarks from the Wii trainer decrease and he becomes a fun companion on my weight loss path. I have found it is particularly good as a substitute for other methods of regularly weighing in. More details on that appear below under Weight Time.
Getting started is easy. I found it very user friendly to set up the equipment. Explore the fun tips and serious weight loss success stories below.

And if you are a pedometer user using the Wii still registers on the step counter for action games such as Just Dance but not so much for yoga or weights. Link to How to Use Pedometer Steps.

Wii Fit Reviews
- Kris Abel's Tech Life :: I've Lost 16 lbs In Six Weeks With Nintendo's Wii Fit
- This past Sunday I reached my goal within Wii Fit. My Mii character appeared on screen with a little bit of fanfare to congratulate me and has expressed some concern that I've managed to lose so much weight so quickly. When you first begin the fitness game, you're asked to set a target for weight loss and, simply for the purpose of getting through the menu screens in order to demonstrate the game for our television show, I entered a goal of 16 lbs over six months, the maximum time period you can choose. My weight at the time was listed as being 166.2 lbs so I figured ...

- Can Wii Fit Deliver Both Fun and Weight Loss?
- What's made it so sought-after? Well, the Wii itself became incredibly popular because it's a video game system for people who don't like video games. It's simple and intuitive. Likewise, the Wii Fit is supposed to be an exercise system for people who don't like exercise. That's me!

Wii Fit or the "Real" Thing?
Oh yeah, and it's great when you share...
Part of the fun is working out what on earth Mr Wii Fit wants you to do, oh and the squeal when you step on the Wii Fit board gets me every time. This is really good as a backup weight loss device although I have heard of everyday users who have really lost the weight. I like it to make exercising more fun when I've got bored or want to do something different with friends and Wii Fit is a good option for this.
The balance games are simple to understand and start out easy and progress with different levels. Your efforts are rated and it's a bit of a hoot to find yourself cheered as a total pro on something you've thought you messed up.
This is an opportunity for a social weight loss game with friends after all something such as walking to lose weight which is a frequent if not daily activity needs to become integrated into your life and including family or friends as soon as possible is a great way to do this.
Like all aspects of weight loss programs, doing it with friends is a bonus but does not substitute for that everyday commitment you need yourself. Wii Fit is a perfect companion for those days when your regular exercise partner is not available.
There are reviews here and in other places from those who have used Wii Fit as their total exercise program. Many other people, me included, enjoy it as an additional option for the right occasion. Like when you're bored, it's raining, other people are around, it's time to get weight loss results.
There are also many examples where users are a family or members of a group e.g. the new mums who twitter each other about their Wii progress.
Is It Worth It? To Buy or Not to Buy?
Like the topic of exercise in general opinions split into two, based mainly on your current attitude to working out. If you're already an 'expert' you may not see the value in doing it the Wii Fit or Sports way. In contrast many physios and other trainers are happy to incorporate it into someone's fitness routine because they appreciate any exercise which the client enjoys. In summary those who do not like the Wii Fit seem to express 2 main objections:
1. There are so many alternative (and better) exercise methods, which I already use so why try and fit this in too.
2. Hey this still requires me to sweat, spend time exercising, watch my diet. What's so great about all that?
Keep Losing Weight
Goal Setting and Progress Checking
OK, it's official, at some point checking our measurements and/or weight, BMI and exercise, is necessary. It can be done just by checking how our clothes fit but it usually takes some sort of recording device to keep us dedicated through thick and thin. (Do you think this is the true meaning of this expression? Just kidding!)
Whether it's a food or exercise log, scales or measurements, it has a miraculous way of keeping us on track.
It takes the subjective out of the question-am I slimmer? This is a slightly different question to 'Have I lost weight?' because for most of us it is really the loss of fat which we want rather than weight loss. With muscle development weight can increase but size decreases.
A good guide is to use clothes that didn't fit which now do but for a more disciplined approach the Wii Fit excels. It tracks your activity and your weight/BMI, compares your results to your previously set goals, commiserates if necessary or congratulates.

It's Been 13 Days Since My Last...
Your Wii Fit is very forgiving.
"It has been a little while (13 days) since my last visit and as I like to be positive when exercising I avoided the fitness test and weigh in today." Putting the Wii Fit console and board away for whatever reason ensures a delayed return to your Wii Fitness. It is a mistake, don't do it!Some blog entries about the Wii are confessions that the user has not been on the board for (fill in the blank) days. However one user blogged about his daily use for one year , and lost over 50 lbs!
The advantage of the Wii Fit for weight loss is that it can be done in the privacy, even secrecy, of your home. This is also the disadvantage! Without the outside motivation of another person or online support, the Wii trainer can only motivate you if you actually turn it on. It is a self reliant technique. You motivate yourself to effectively use the Wii Fit. You can find fellow Wii Fitters by searching Twitter for Wii Fit references. Or searching forums. See the forum link below. Online there are thousands of people blogging (see blog links below) about weight loss, exercise, walking, etc. This is a means of staying disciplined.
Other people's support as fellow users of the Wii Fit can be very helpful. Not because you are exercising together but because it is a way of staying connected to the purpose for you of the exercise, and allows you to ride out the idiosyncrasies of Wii Fit.

There's more to the Wii than Fit
- Upload your photos! The Wii uses an optional SD memory card to hold extra data, which means that you can plug in your memory card from your digital camera. Once you have the SD memory card installed, you can take your photos into the Photo Channel, draw on them, add stickers, and them e-mail them back and forth to your friends via the Wii Message Board. Silly, maybe, but fun.

I recommend this because...
it is easily set up, stored and offers a variety of different activities to avoid boredom, and offers helpful guidance on how to do certain exercises. It doesn't want to turn you into a professional athlete or gym junkie. It is for the not too active person who would like to get leaner and live a normal life with all the benefits a healthy body brings.
Wii Fit tracks your activity and diet, as well a your weight and BMI. You input a weight loss goal and time, and it will advise you on the appropriateness of the goals although it is up to you, of course.
