Starting Out from Bar Harbor, Maine on our Boatride

A Whale Watch

We will be heading out of Bar Harbor early this morning and headed out for the Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge and Petit Manan Island. We will be scanning the skys as we depart Bar Harbor, in hopes of seeing bald eagles and osprey which frequent the area. Petit Manan has a large breeding colony of atlantic puffins, along with common eiders (sea ducks), and common arctic and roseate terns. We will also see harbor seals and on occasion, in the Spring, harp seals.

From Petit Manan island, we will head out to the whale feeding grounds. Once there, we can expect to see finback and humpback whales and on occasion Minke whales which are common in these waters.

The Complete Whale-Watching Handbook: A Guide to Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises of the World

The Complete Whale-Watching Handbook is a spectacular celebration of whales, porpoises, and dolphins, and of the immense diversity of opportunities to view these spectacular marine mammals in the wild. Once the stuff of fishermen's yarns and literary classics, we can all now experience the excitement of an eye-to-eye encounter with a whale, dolphin, or porpoise.

This book covers the biology of each creature listed, focusing on the species that can be seen on excursions, the behaviors likely to be encountered, and the nature of the industry. There is also a species guide, followed by a comprehensive region-by-region guide to whale-, dolphin-, or porpoise-watching opportunities worldwide. Up-to-date listings include contact information and a seasonal analysis of the species that can be expected. There are also sections explaining the study of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, examining the impact of whale-watching on whale populations, and offering practical advice on how to view, photograph and enjoy these creatures in the wild.

Maine Marine Animal Rescue Organizations

*University of New England, Biddeford Maine

The Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center is an important division of the University of New England's Marine Science Education and Research Center. The rehabilitation facility is part of a network of centers authorized by the National Marine Fisheries Service to rescue and rehabilitate stranded marine mammals and sea turtles. MARC not only rescues and rehabilitates animals, but also works to develop the most effective means of rehabilitation, and researches the causes of marine mammal mortality and the state of the marine environment.

*Allied Whale, College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine

Allied Whale, College of the Atlantic's marine mammal research group, was founded in 1972 to conduct research for the effective conservation of marine mammal populations and their habitats, and to train students to enter careers related to those goals. While our research is primarily based in the Gulf of Maine, our efforts extend north to Canada and across the North Atlantic to the British Isles south to the Cape Verde Islands as well as all the way down to South America and Antarctica.

Allied Whale is committed to the understanding and preservation of marine mammals. We respond to marine mammal strandings from Rockland, Maine to the Canadian border, curate the humpback and fin whale catalogues for the North Atlantic as well as the Antarctic humpback whale catalogue, and operate the most remote field research station on the eastern seaboard of the United States: Mount Desert Rock.

We are a non-profit organization that raises research funds through grant writing and donations, as well as offering Allied Whale merchandise and adopt-a-whale certificates.
