How far has the written word came

writing on cave walls, clay...

Egypt figuresIn Ancient times, they drew on walls, tablets of clay, picture depicting the story, Did that make the words less engaging or interesting? Then there came manuscripts, and finally paper, does it really matter what or how we read the written words.
There is no disputing that the eReader continues to be one of the hottest selling items on the market. Why? Is it a novelty item, should we all move into the 21st century and embrace it, or should we dig our heels in as sometimes things are just worth fighting for.
But It has been suggested that reading a paper book is faster than reading an eReader...that surprised even me, some of the perks are you can pick up a book, drop it on the floor and pick it up where you left off, do this with your ebook and you may find it broken.

Books

are e-reader replacing books....

a novel reader I love nothing better than visiting the library, that unmistakable musty smell, that hits you when you open the door, it reminds me of when I was young, my mum reading to me in the quiet corner.
I have a vast collection of books, some I have read more than twice, the pages being folded over at the corner, the coffee marks, from being so engrosed in the book you actually miss your mouth with the cup. I still own some books given to me as presents, even dating back to when I was a small child.
The feel, texutre and smell of the paper itself. Wrapping up in a huge fleece blanket, snuggling into your favourite chair...lost in the words leaping from the paper
Now even this simple pleasure has been overtaken by the computer age! With the introduction of ebook readers. A question I ask is how long will it take for the ereader to replace books?

The Enviromental impact

Books v's eReader (Kindle)

type=textAlthough there are suggestions that the ereader offsets its CO2 emmissions within the first year!.The iPad pays for its CO2 emissions about one third-of the way through your 18th book, and It is suggested it takes 23 books to pay off the carbon footprint of a Kindle.
But then you need electric to run your device. However the new Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Wi-Fi, Graphite, 6
has storage available for Up to 3,500 books, download in 60 seconds due to the Wi-Fi being Built in.... Over 750,000 books, including 107 of 111 New York Times Best Sellers, plus audiobooks, periodicals and blogs. For non-U.S. customers, content availability varies, and share passages with your friends via Social network sites...and soon to be available let your friends read your downloads too.

If the paper Books were to disappear, there would be thousands of Jobs are in the publishing industry at risk...so how will the ereader change publishing...unfortunately only time will tell, however statistics and developments of the ereaders are changing everyday and getting more and more popular
The publishing of books, newspapers are statistically renowned for being a huge factor in the enviromental world, not only to our trees, but also our water resources too.
We know that in order to make our books, we chop down vast amounts of trees, however a book can last as long as you want it to. It can be re-cycled as many times as you want it to be. I take some of my books to the local charity shop where I hand them over and buy some new books to bring home.

Kylyssa says:

I'm an early adopter. I got my first dedicated ebook reader in 2001 and, for me, it has almost entirely replaced paper books. I can carry four hundred books at a time and I can read in the dark.

I read books to distract my mind from my chronic pain when it becomes too intense. Unfortunately I read very fast and I'm in pain quite frequently. My ereader makes it easier for me to have enough books on hand to switch to something more distracting if the book I'm reading isn't doing the job. I can also read in bed with my ereader and not disturb my partner's sleep when I'm suffering from insomnia.

I still use the same ereader I got in 2001 and I've read literally thousands of books on it in the last ten years. It only holds a charge for 20 hours of use now but there's a ton of free content out there for it plus, I can put things I'm going to edit onto it to read at my convenience.

Francesca says:

That traditional books are better because i could sav you money and you could also save electricity ,so you can't do things that involes electricity if you have a e-reader. Also, you could not charge it overnight and you can't burn out any cable wire current. there's just something about e-readers I just don't like.

TheWhistler says:

Yes, unfortunately it will. I guess they felt the same way when they replaces stone tablets with scrolls, and scrolls with books. Wait a minute I think we just went back to tablets. Everything old is new again.

CNSQ says:

Aside from saving the trees it also save us the cumbersome of storing these books when your done. E-book on the other hand can save space and you can bring any number of e-books as long as your e-reader has the capacity to handle

Thamisgith says:

I much prefer reading on my Kindle to reading "real" books. Eventually, and probably sooner than you think, ebooks will become the norm.

MiddleSister says:

Th ereader will replace the paper book as soon as they figure out a way to get graphics on the screen. If an ipad counts as an ereader, they've already done it.

littlelotus says:

I think the eReader has several advantages over paper book - no papers used is the biggest one;)

Tipi says:

In many regards it already has!

Koupie says:

I think eventually it could take over an actual book, but there will alway be books. I think the cost of the ereaders is a bit high for a lot of middle income people still.

andyhanson says:

guarantee it,
will eventually be so cheap you will be a dumbie not to by it

Tunafish says:

The paper book will be replaced by an eReader, but NOT by the current one. There's no way to stop change, and if the kindle or the sony reader isn't good enough to replace millenniums of traditions, eReaders will be made better and better, up to the point that if one prefers it that way, an eReader will look, feel, and even smell like a book, but one that can change the letters and the ink inside (we don't need to go this far to replace the book). Right now, I'd only use an eReader to read a book, where I start in the first page and keep on going. A picture book, or an encyclopedia or a dictionary are more practical using a paper book. The process or replacing the book will take decades, if not centuries, for replacing a paper book isn't like replacing a disc with a CD, and a CD with an iPod.

However, if technology companies are able to raise kids with the notion that new is always better, and lower the price of it so that the eReader can be introduced at an early age, these kids will not remember the tradition of books, just like my generation doesn't see the advantage of collecting disks and tapes instead of buying an iPod. When this happens, books will only be able to live up to the point that the last generation of book lovers lives. Hasn't anyone noticed that no kid writes an essay by hand anymore? Did anyone notice that handwriting is becoming incresingly less important in schools?

Finally, I must make sure that everyone understands that the eReader will replace the book, but not wipe out every book from existence. This won't happen for the same reason that a handwritten bible from the 15th or 16th century is worth a lot more than the same bible that was printed yesterday in my garage after a week of coping it down ;D

No way, Monkeybrain!

jimmy says:

mihgasper says:

No way. They can coexist like radio and TV!

kansasww says:

Not for me. I will always have my books. Ido like the Kindle for travel but it can never replace my real books.

Paperbooklover says:

No way! Paper books here to stay!!!!!
I might be young now but jve read more books than I've been alive. I get entranced in a books. Feeling the pages, smelling the ink, and most of all enjoying the story. Ereaders I don't get the same feeling with. It doesn't feel real or like the adventure is in my hands. I love curling up in a ball on my bed or on the couch plugging in the ear phones and leaving reality to enter a world of pretense. It's the magic in the book, I say. A paper book has a soul no ereaders can emulate. Just going into a library and running my hand over the books as I look for the perfect next read. The smell of it all and the feel. Oh, the pages and the way a corners bent or how it has splatters of things on it fro. The many times I've read it. Most of all I would miss having the feel g of picking up an old time favorite and naming it part by part as I re-read it. Paper books cannot go. They are a life beyond this one to others and that's something I find no eraeder will give me. Paper books will always be in the favor of people everywhere!

LeCordonDude says:

NEVER!!!! but I do like eReaders, just don't tell my library!!!

HSSchulte says:

I just can't get over my love of cluttery, paper books. Something about holding them and smelling them is better. =)

katiecolette says:

There's no way I will switch to Ereaders. I love paper books too much. Hope I am not the only one - because if they stop printing books, I will miss them dearly...

RebeccaE says:

I don't think it will. but then again I've been wrong before.

JeanJohnson says:

I love books, while reading a paper back it won't run out of batteries, it won't short circuit and it won't cause cancer in the future.

punkgrinder says:

I hope not, i hope there will be another way of producing physical books that won't use paper but apart from that i just buying a book in a shop and sitting down to read it. If E-Readers do take over, there will be no need for libraries, i wouldn't like that.

sukkran says:

i don't think so. ereader may be replaced by some other invention. but, book will be there.

MaxReily says:

I sincerely hope not! I'll never give up my books!

rwoman says:

Well, I think technology will eventually replace the book but not sure it will be an e-reader. We seem to be moving to multiple-use tech tools rather than single use. You can't buy a phone that is just a phone any more (at least the wireless kind) and I expect that will be the case with books too. But I think books are still going to be around for a while.

Ramkitten says:

No, not completely. I think there will always be regular bookstores. Too many people will continue to want a "real" book they can hold and then, if they like it, put it on the shelf. There's something about the look of shelves full of books, not to mention browsing through them in the stores. I especially love the old bookstores with the creaky wooden floors. I think eReaders will put SOME bookstores out of business but not all.

Ruthi says:

I surely hope the eReader never replaces the printed word. For me, nothing beats holding a book in my hands -- seeing, touching, feeling, smelling, hearing the words of the storyteller. I don't have an eReader, don't want one, and hope I am never forced to change my mind.

noname says:

NOOO there's so much of a better experience with an actual book. the smell, the feel, etc.
also e books can break, battery can run out while you're reading a sentence, etc.

0ctavias0fferings says:

No, I don't think eReaders will replace books, you need a book to read in the bath! While eReaders may be fine for the latest fiction etc, they can in no way replace reference works and the like. I really don't think that eReaders will completely replace the written word, in all kinds of genres the book itself lends an extra dimension to the work it contains.
I also think that there is always the possibility of electronic/electrical interference not only wiping your eReader but wiping out all record of works which only appear in electronic form, meaning that if there is no hard copy, the work will have vanished forever.
Centuries ago, much of the literature of the day was wiped out when the ancient library at Alexandria went up in flames. It is certainly not impossible that solar flares and other natural events could destroy eletronic works. It would be a shame to repeat the mistakes of the long distant past.

MissMerFaery says:

I don't think so, no. Some things get replaced, like cassettes, and some things will always exist, like books! After all, who wants to take an expensive Kindle onto the beach or on a jam-packed tube train? As much as I am all for saving the environment, I couldn't possibly do without my books. The only plus side I can see to the Kindle is it solves the problem of what to do when all your bookshelves are full, like mine...!

fanfreluche says:

Not for me! I have 3 huge and filled bookcases, and I want more. Nothing beats the smell of an old book, or the fun of unwrapping a gift to discover a new book, or spending an hour in a bookstore.
