William Holman Hunt had been originally given the middle name of Hobman, which he strongly did not care for. He later found out that his middle name was misspelled in a clerical mistake during his baptism in the church of Saint Mary the Virgin, Ewell and so changed his middle name to the well known Holman. While his last name is "Hunt", his later popularity as an artist prompted him to include his middle name as a portion of his surname, in the combined form "Holman-Hunt", under which his children are recognized.

William Holman Hunt was at first declined acceptance to the Royal Academy Schools and once finally accepted, Hunt rebelled the teachings of the art school founder Sir Joshua Reynolds. In 1848 organized the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood joining forces with poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Together with John Everett Millais they attempted to revitalize art by accentuating the careful reflection of the natural universe in a spirit of quasi-religious tones with careful attention to accuracy. This religious overture had shaped by the Brotherhood's interest in the spiritual tones of medieval art they admired, following the style of the Renaissance personified by Raphael.

Biography

At the start of his artistic career, William Holman Hunt's art was not well received, and had been greatly criticized in the art world press for the questionable awkwardness of his subject along with what the critics felt was ugliness. Hunt did reached some early mention for his accurate portrayals of current pastoral and urban life, as can be seen in the painting titled The Hireling Shepherd and also The Awakening Conscience. Even so, it had been in his devout religious art works that earned him some recognition. His most easily recognizable painting, Light of the World, was exhibited in Great Britain as well as the United States. Hunt visited to the Holy Land in order to discover correct geographical material for additional religious paintings where created painting The Scapegoat, The Finding of the Savior in the Temple as well as the dramatic art work The Shadow of Death. He also produced several landscapes of the area. In the tradition of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, William Holman Hunt produced numerous paintings portraying themes taken from poetry, as in Isabella and the Pot of Basil and also The Lady of Shalott.

Each these art works had been renowned for their eminent care to detail, their strong vivid color along with their complicated symbolism. Hunt had been strongly influenced by the publications of art critic and writer John Ruskin as well as Thomas Carlyle, who reported that the world itself ought to be interpreted as a scheme of visual signals. Hunt felt it was the obligation of the painter to expose the symmetry among symbols and reality. Of the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Holman Hunt stayed most accurate to their ideals during his life and career as an artist. later in life, he finally had to abandon painting due to weakening vision which did not allow him to achieve the degree of quality which he desired. His final outstanding work, The Lady of Shalott, was finished with the assistance of an helper, artist and painter Edward Robert Hughes.

William Holman Hunt had been marriedtwo times. Following a unsuccessful engagement to his sitter Annie Miller, he wed Fanny Waugh, who later posed for the design of Isabella. Fanny passed away in childbearing in Italy and Holman Huntcarved her tomb up at Fiesole, later bringing it to the English Cemetery to rest alongside the grave of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. His 2d wife, Edith, had been Fanny's sister. During this period it was not lawful in Britain to wed one's deceased wife's sister, therefore Hunt was pressured to trip overseas to marry her. The wedding resulted in a grave falling out with additional family members, and notably his previous Pre-Raphaelite fellow Thomas Woolner, who had wed Fanny and Edith's sister Alice.

In 1905 he was awarded the Order of Merit.
