Who is William Levy? He's a hot Cuban-American tv star of Univision telenovelas.

I run Caray, Caray!, a blog which translates and discusses the Univision telenevelas for English-speaking fans, and I don't allow celebrity gossip on that site. But I find myself intrigued by the amazing improvement in the acting of star William Levy as Alejandro (Alex) in the novela I am currently blogging, Sortilegio (it means "Enchantment").

Levy seemed like a wooden, vacuous pretty boy in Acorralada (it means "Trapped") and I wasn't looking forward to his starring in this one, but he's made a jump in his abilities and now I'm curious about him so I thought I'd do a little research and share it with you here. Also, I'm interested in what you might have to say, so please leave a comment in the guest book.

Sadly, it's hard to find pictures of William Levy wearing a shirt. If you google him, you will find way too many pictures of him wearing nothing but ridiculous little underpants. If he wants to be a serious actor he might want to think about that. I also noticed many people are searching for a calendar of "William Levy desnudo" (you can guess what that is, can't you?) so there probably is one, but I'm not going to point you to it. That's not my kind of thing.

Is William Levy Jewish? Clearly, even if he was born a Jew, he isn't one now: he converted to Catholicism earlier this year. This and many other questions are hard to answer because Levy isn't chatty with the media.

A little bit about William Levy's professional life

William Levy Gutiérrez was born August 28, 1980 in Cojimar, Havana, Cuba. His first career was as a model, and he was then in a couple of Telemundo reality shows: Isla de la Tentación and Protagonistas de Novela 2.

We saw him first on Univision in Mi Vida Eres Tu and Acorralada; then he had his breakout in Carla Estrada's Pasión, and afterwards he was the lead in Cuidado con el Angel with actress Maite Perroni. (Seen with him in this picture - oh, amazing, he got the girl.)

Of all these, the only one I saw was Pasión.

I think it's his current role, as the smart, tender, sexy millionaire who falls in love with the girl of humble origins who has been presented to him as (surprise!) his wife following his near death in a car crash, that's going to really send him skyrocketing.

I believe this was William Levy's first big break in telenovelas. He plays the galan, of course. The chemistry with his lady love was much remarked upon!

In Pasion, William Levy played a blacksmith

He often had his shirt on but it was usually unbuttoned

Carla Estrada is perhaps the most respected producer of telenovelas today; until now she mostly made period pieces like "Alborada."

In Pasión, she cast Levy as a blacksmith with a, uh, weak personality. He was loved by - and redeemed by - the sweet, ingenuous Ines, though he also carried on a romance with a frizzy-haired modern beauty on the side.

He had one of the worst haircuts ever seen on tv - a very, very long mullet.

A great telenovela! Pasion (Passion)

William Levy played a small role, but the star is Fernando Colunga, the "Best Looking Man on Earth"

The fact is, William Levy wasn't very good in this role - but he was pretty, and the novela itself is excellent and stars Fernando Colunga, who causes everybody who sees him to swoon. He's also a nice guy. Costar Susanna Gonzalez was good, too!

"Television is the biggest trampoline in the artistic world." (William Levy)

A little bit about William Levy's personal life

My translation from Spanish-language Wikipedia

William Gutiérrez Levy was born in Cuba, but before he was 15 years old he emigrated legally to the United States because his stepfather obtained political asylum and was able to get his family out of the country.

While Levy was secondary school he excelled at baseball, which permitted him to get a scholarship to university. He began his studies in business administration, but after two years he stopped in order to enter the entertainment agency; he was hired as a model...

It was during his work on Protagonistas de novela 2 that he met the Mexican-American actress Elizabeth Gutiérrez; they have a son named Christopher Alexander, but their relationship has come to an end according to statements of the actor himself; nevertheless they are expecting a second child according to statements by the actress.

He's decided to stay in the artistic realm and studied acting in Miami, Los Angeles, and Mexico. In July of 2009 he professed the Catholic religion.
William Levy, sexy Cuban actor, star of Sortilegio

El joven cubano William Levy es muy guapo

"I can assure you I would not pardon an infidelity. I've never had proofs in my hand that would bring me to the brink of a decision, but I'm sure that my son deserves respect, and I myself am a valuable woman. I know what I give in a relationship and that's why I wouldn't pardon a deception." Elizabeth Gutierrez

The plot of "Sortilegio" - William Levy's current vehicle.

Ah, why don't WE live lives like this?

Long ago, two married people had a torrid affair. The woman got pregnant. Her husband, who was infertile, spirited her off to Europe where she gave birth to twins. He raised them with great love as if they were his own. Unfortunately, they turned out to be the villains of this story: Raquel is spoiled and capricious, Bruno is angry and doesn't want to share his mommy with anybody.

There in Europe, the kind husband and his once-straying wife live in harmony until he dies, but not before he tenderly tells his beloved spouse, "Go back to Mexico and find that guy, the love of your life, the father of your twins." Considerate, eh?

So she goes, and discovers that the love-of-her-life's wife died giving birth to Alex (the hero of our story - William Levy), so he's widowed also, so the two reunite and raise their three kids together, not telling any of them that they all have the same blood father. Are you following? Also, they're filthy rich.

They grow up. The dad realizes Bruno (the bad son) is a disaster and so in his will he leaves everything to the good son except for a few random very handsome properties. Then he sticks his crutch-tip into a hole in the sidewalk and gets smashed to death by a motorcycle.

Bruno and his sister quickly run through their inheritances, but they are living in luxury in Alex's mansion - along with the mom and a big batch of servants.

Bruno hatches a peculiar plot. He finds a pretty poor girl on vacation in Cancún (so how could she afford that?), makes her fall in love with him (by the device of always having his shirt unbuttoned), and marries her - all under the name of his brother Alex! Then he hires a guy to kill Alex by running him off the road into a chasm. See, then the "widow" will inherit everything, and he Bruno who she THOUGHT she married can marry her and then HE'LL have everything!

But Alex doesn't die. So when he gets back from the hospital he discovers he's "married" a woman he's never seen before. Now, gradually, he and she are falling in love for real as he tries to unwind his evil half-brother's machinations.

That's as far as we've gotten. Oh, except of course she's pregnant.

A representative scene from Sortilegio

You can watch almost the whole telenovela at YouTube but the sound is terrible!!

In the first part of this video, Alex and his "wife" Maria Jose are at the hospital where her father has been taken after being beaten up by thugs (the dad was involved, in a dundering way, in illegal pirating of dvds, do you think there's a hidden message there?!!!) Alex is reassuring the nervous MJ that he doesn't mind taking care of her whole family.

Even if you don't understand Spanish this will show you what a nice job he is doing!

Then, she's so grateful she gives in to being his wife in the fuller sense. Don't worry, nothing untoward occurs on stage.

She is, however, suspicious and afraid - because, after all, it was Alex's own evil half-brother who convinced her to marry and then was gonna knock this one off! Maybe all men are like that??

William Levy may soon be seen in movies in the United States

From an interview in Cubaencuentro.com

My translation from an interview published in May 2009 called "William Levy has a proposal from Hollywood"

The Cuban actor William Levy, star of Mexican telenovelas, was contacted by Gene Mottola, of the U.S. Mottola Entertainment productions, who offered him participation in a project.

"It will be after the telenovela Sortilegio is complted," said Levy, who was named in the list of the "50 most beautiful men" in People en espanol, and who some have called "the Latino Brad Pitt."

"There are also other projects in the Latino cinema. ... I hope the project (with Mottola) comes through, because the American movie industry is what I would like to dedicate myself to in the future."

In agreement with Universal Pictures, Mottolla is preparing the filming of "Life in the Fastlane," which will be produced by his company and by Sundeep Malani, an iconic actress from India.

Levy left Cuba with his family for Miami when he was 15, after the United States granted his stepfather political asylum. His grandmother still lives in Cuba.

"I had to part from my family, leave my native country because of the Cuban government, I don't want to go into details. I had to confront very difficult things even as a child... What's difficult ... is the moment of leaving your loved ones behind, those that you slept with every night in the same bed; we all slept together," said the actor.

"But at that age I already knew I had to leave to help find a better future for myself and my family."

What is a mujeriego?

And is William Levy a mujeriego?

Mujer is the Spanish word for woman (it's often used, though, as in mi mujer, to mean "my wife"). A mujeriego is a womanizer, a philanderer, a skirt-chaser.

Handsome movie and tv stars are often gossiped about. There has been gossip about Levy and his past co-stars (like Maite Perroni) and his current one as well (Jacqueline Bracamontes). It is not for me to say. But a guy who is constantly found posing in very tiny undies would not be my first choice as a husband.

Or, as Susana says...

"He's like a table dancer, you like some of them and not others. Nobody marries a table dancer - would you marry one?" (Susana Zabaleta)

This is the favorite telenovela of many of the readers of my Caray, Caray! blog. Of course, when they put them on dvd they condense them greatly - they also add English subtitles. When I was just starting out, I watched with Spanish subtitles and a dictionary.

Fernando Colungo, the hero (the galan in Spanish), is called by many "The Best Looking Man on Earth." Lucero, who plays the doughty heroine, is a famous singer and more recently was the evil stepmother in Mañana es para siempre. They were a good pair. The scenery and costumes are gorgeous.

Elna June, William was never married legally to Elizabeth they maybe common law man and wife because the lived together for over six years in Miami. I don't know what the laws are down there to pertaining to that though. William only started to call Elizabeth his wife when the rumors were getting out of control about him and Maite. Plus Elizabeth's irrational out of control jealousy, Whether she's pregnant or not one day she is the next day she isn't i don;'t know. The curious thing concerning it is William did not acknowledge whether nit was true until near the end of Sortilegio being finish in Mexico. Someone mention on the Sortilegio recap why Maite was cold to William at the Premios Telenovelas awards show. Maite has been attacked by Elizabeth maybe Maite felt William didn't try so hard to control his baby mama.Anyway what's being said now is Maite is saying she doea not want to work with William again because of the insults she had to endure from Elizabeth. Is William and JB in a relationship now i don't know they have been seen in one another company after the filming ended with Sortilegio. Remember William went out a couple of times with Maite too. The curious thing about it all is how quiet Elizabeth has been about this supposed rumored romanced between William and JB. How ballistic and nast aggressive she was towards the runors with William and Maite. I said this before if you had seen the awards show William wasn't exactly happy with Elizabeth then i think he had finally realized it was not going to work out between them. Couple of months later from the awards show at the beginning of Sortilegio was when he announced his separation from Elizabeth. William has maintain a cordial relationship with Elizabeth for the sake of their son. They even live in the same apartment building in Mexico, funny because months prior to their separation William had asked Elizabeth to finish up her novela for Telemundo filmed in Miami to move to Mexico with their son and support him and his career. Elizabeth response at that time was a flat out no. We will know in acouple of months if she really is pregnant, i just don't think William is going to start or renew their relationship like it was before. Elizabeth wants that though.

Are William and JB a couple in real life? I am so confused. I though his partner (Elizabeth) was pregnant with his second child. The I read that they married. Then I read that she wasn't pregnant at all and that they had broken up as a couple. Perhaps someone can clarify...

Love William Levy! He is doing a phenomenal job in Sortilegio. Outstanding improvement in acting. I hope he has success in movies if that's what he wants to do, and I wish the rumors about Maite are just rumors because it would be awesome to see the two paired in a better novela than CCEA, though I did enjoy the show while it lasted. BTW, you guys are doing a great job with Caray! Keep it up. :) :) :)

Vicky i am just as big a Levy fan as anyone . I hope my post are not considered as personal attacks though. I was posting the information other people had asked concerning William private life. Since we were told to come here and do it. That's what i have been doing. Yes i gave my opinion concerning William's relationship with Elizabeth based on the info i acquired. I believe since i have seen all of William's novelas except Passion i am so impressed with how he has grown as a actor. I just don't want to see his career derailed because of his baby mama drama. At this point it is affecting it, the latest rumor being Maite Perroni saying she won't work him anymore because of the insults she had to put up with while filming Cuidado. The most absurd thing about it is Elizabeth is an really good actress too. My self along with a lot of other people would love to see William and Maite paired again only in a better written novela. It's funny though after William announced his breakup with Elizabeth she has not said one insult or disparaging word towards Jackie B. So it kind of lends credence to some of the talk on the internet about her controlling him and all. Time will tell how their relationship will play out. I sincerely hope he is happy with who ever he chooses to be with. I just don't want to see some one who is jealous and envious try to sabotaged his bright career. I think William has learn from his experiences on Cuidado not to be so open about his private life anymore .

This young man is a soaring star -- saw him in Pasión as Vasco and was very impressed with his acting abilities -- then Cuidado came about ... watched it here and there ... the female lead role was sort of juvenile ... but kept going back to check William Levy in the leading male role and was also very impressed as well with the multi-talents, the sincerity and honesty that came through without the typical male telenovela actors that truly appear to be acting most of the time. As soon as Sortilegio was announced with William in the lead male role ... marked the calendar alright and checked it out on the internet ... just to get a glimpse of the plot and so on. Of course, all of Carla Estrada's work of recent years have been excellent and as one of Fernando Colunga's greatest fans ... always felt there was something missing in terms of emotional expression and a certain amount of stiffness -- naturally, from the Mexican culture perspective, a sense of "machismo" may be an explanation for it. Of course a lot has to do with the specific role and the instructions the actor must follow. However, just the ratings in the USA since Sortilegio started Oct 6th alone show the absolute fascination with this work -- it has everything any telenovela fan could possibly want in terms of magic, illusion, presentation, music, scenery, background, intrigue, adventure, etc. The historical novels by Estrada have been of the outmost quality judging by the comments found on the Internet everywhere. And, many wondered how this Sortilegio would fair in a very modern period. The ratings in the US demonstrate that it has appealed to the Spanish-speaking audience extremely well. Had been watching Jackie Bracamontes since she played a supporting role in Rubí as Maribel ... and she definitely looked like she had great potential. So it is delightful to see what a great acting pair these two young people make whose acting is most convincing in every sense of the word. Both of them deserve a great deal of praise ... these roles are great challenging opportunities for them to grow in their careers and their styles are greatly welcomed by many viewers. Gone are the classical acting styles presented over the last 50 years ... and these representations provide a glimpse of what is to come ... a greater sense of "reality" or a translucence that comes through the dialog that is more appropriate for these time and era -- a sense of sensibility and sensitivity expressed through the actors themselves.

It is a wonderful thing to be able to share opinions and to exchange ideas and I have been looking very hard where to go on the internet to help provide a balance -- it is very sad to find such degree of attacks on the personal lives of these wonderful people that work so hard to do a great job and to demonstrate their talent in a difficult and highly competitive medium. The barrage of media involvement and the "gossiping" and "conjecturing" about the type of idolatry that has developed around these people is absolutely bizarre. Not just in Sortilegio ... but also during the time that Cuidado was created and shown in Mexico. The "magnifying glass" criticism about everything about their looks, their lives, and everything about them, is absolutely silly and very much exaggerated in every sense. Good looks help but they are not everything Then too, open judgment about their personal involvements outside of their work is an extension that is totally unnecessary -- yes, Estrada hit the nail on its head by putting these two together. But young actors like them need a certain degree of privacy so they can achieve higher levels of performance and permanence because FAME and a sense of CELEBRITY status can do so much harm -- why add to those difficult conditions and put so much strain on their personal lives.

Another thing ... talent knows no boundaries nor is it restricted to particular nationalities or religious affiliations. It is just wonderful that in this global more connected world someone like William Levy has the opportunity to go to another country and be considered an equal. It reminds me of Selena (such a great talent whom we lost just as she was becoming widely accepted). The Mexican and Latin-American public in the US as well as in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries of the world embraced her. As totally bilingual she sang both in English and Spanish. And, so, William is our hope for the future ... he has the ability and the talent not only to perform and act in the Spanish-speaking world but having lived and been raised in the US he has the potential to become a great actor in the US and the English-speaking world as well and it will be a great joy just to stand by and watch him develop further. And we must pray for him so he can keep it together along the way!!!

Ok i don't know if this is true or not i will post later to verify if so. They are saying on several sites that Maite Perroni is saying she will not work with William again because of the way she been insulted.Mainly she is talking about Elizabeth and if this true this why William broke up with her. She is not only messing with the man's money but his career. I'll try and find out if it's really true. I hope not because i would love to see them star together again in a more adult novela like Sortilegio.

This site and caray caray are just great!! I too am soooo impressed by WL's acting in Sortilegio. He is the character he portrays. I first had a glimpse of him on a promo for CCEA, and was smitten by his good looks, that I decided to check it out. Because of him, am now hooked on novelas; the other one is Mas Sabe el Diablo. I don't even know Spanish. I wish Univision would close caption in English, like the Telemundo shows. I also tried to search for pics of him with clothes on, and they sure are hard to come by. No importa!! we all make mistakes; just learn from them. Hope to see more of WL in the near future --- he sizzles!!

Hi Fiddler blog mom. Thanks for the newest pics you've posted of Levy, and the DVD info.

Yes, I must agree. The part of Vasco on Pasion wasn't a significant one, though he couldn't have minded it much because while Colunga and everyone else was off in galan pirate hell, he got to lay around all the time with the highly-sexy Ursula. LOL

The thing, for me, about the Vasco role was that while I only really watched it with half an eye and had no idea who Levy was at the time, towards the end of his story arc (when Vasco finally untangled himself from Ursula and reconciled with the wife Ines), the man did make me stand at attention during that reconciliation love scene. Levy, Kika Edgar (Ines), producer Carla Estrada, and her team worked some freaking magic with that scene that made me forget every other sex scene in the darned show (sorry, Colunga). It is in my opinion one of the most sensual love scenes ever done on any show. Wondrous stuff. Kika singing the accompanying song, "Lo Siento Mi Amor" was simply the icing on the cake.

What with his acting chops having gotten so deep, and him not being afraid to use what he has, I can only imagine what more we're going to see from William Levy during the next decade.

What i find mind boggling is that Elizabeth is an actress too. While she can't control her fans with what they say or do. She have put a stop to family and friends or people claim they are from doing it.From the way Elizabeth kept making comments about Maite or towards her it look like she was trying to sabotage William's career. Now imagine any leading lady maybe wanting to act with William but not put up with an over jealous girlfriend who is insecure attacking you and calling you an homewrecker and a slut. All you are doing is acting on film that's all how would you feel. William finally got tired of trying to make it work with Elizabeth. Even now her fans, friends and family are saying they are together in a relationship again etc. I really feel for the guy. One fan even wrote he should stay with her because they have an child together and another on the way.

Angel i do agree William should have been more discreet about answering the questions concering his relationship with Elizabeth. He has learn from this experience because he is not talking anymore about his personal life. What should he do when part of the problem is his baby's mama. Yes Elizabeth is his girlfriend of six to seven years not his wife. They have co-habitated together so they maybe common law man and wife. They have never been married in a church or by a judge or anyone with the authority to marry them. Why is Elizabeth the problem? You may ask Elizabeth friends , family and fans have posted alot negative stuff about William on the internet. Calling him an womanizer, a cheater saying he's going to go bald. Everything they can think of they have tried to paint William in a bad light. Believe me this was done before he announced the end of their relationship.

I think that when people are in the bright lights and fame is being persude that there will be callateral damage by rumors and remarks and enuendo about Williams marriage. Because people of today love scandal and rumors more, than they respect the boundaries of his family life. The two should never cross each other. I think that he will learn by trial and error to keep his family life private, by not disclosing anything to anyone. When asked about family say no comment. To just say my family is well and move without giving anymore details. Good Luck Angel

What impresses me most about Levy is that he doesn't seem satisfied to skate through the acting world on his looks alone (which he probably could very well do). It doesn't seem he is satisifed to be The Pretty Boy. While he KNOWS what he has and how to use it well--heheh--his efforts show that he wants more than that.

I wasn't in NovelaLand when Acorralada aired, so I went back and checked it out. Ugh, "Lunkhead Larry" indeed! But there's one scene I won't forget anytime soon where "Larry" revealed a devastating secret. After months of using 3 emotions, suddenly Levy's face just cracked, on the edge of a meltdown, right before he pulled it back. A serious moment of evolution for him and, this being 2009, I already knew where it had lead him: to the near effortless pain he displayed minutes before "Alex and MJ" made love for the first time in Sortilegio. Heck, during all of Sortilegio so far.

He's made emotion and body language an art form in addition to being smoking hot.

Mrs. Levy you can go to esmas or univision go to either the celebrity section or type in William Levy in buscar engine. That stands for look. No William is not marrying Elizabeth, I believe she got pregnant on purpose to keep him with her. I think William had enough with her act. She's been very bitchy towards Maite since she starred with William in Cuidado and the rumors started about them maybe messing around. Same rumors are now being said about Jackie and him she has kept very quiet. It seems that Elizabeth was very controlling in their relationship. William has said since he announced the end of their union that he will always respect as the mother of his son. Since then any interview William has had. He only talks about how much he loves his son. So that doesn't sound like a man ready to jump the broom. Elizabeth should just accept it and move on with her life. So far she won't

This site is great. Thank you for all that you do. I love the Caray Caray site. I found it when I was watching my first telenovela Querida Enemiga. I would be lost if not for all the wonderful recappers. I would love to someday know Spanish well enough to recap there myself one day. I love reading the comments of everyone. I really like Fernando Colunga, however, after watching Sortilegio William Levy is the one to watch. He is so much better in this than he was in Cuidado con el angel. Again thanks to you and all the recappers at the Caray site.

This was the first I'd heard of William Levy...but you've done a great job introducing him! Very well done 5* and blessed.
