Welcome to the Riverbank
It is a lovely story with excitement but without being too frightening. It can open the door to the world of books for young children and show them that their own imagined visions of a tale can be as gripping as anything on television or their computers.

Eventually, he takes Mole to meet his friend Mr Toad of Toad Hall, a reckless character given to sudden enthusiasms. When they arrive at Toad Hall, Toad is waxing lyrical about life on the open road in a horse drawn caravan and talks them into accompanying him.
At this time, motor cars were new and there were very few on the roads. As they ride along on the caravan, a car drives past them and frightens the horse so it bolts and badly damages the caravan.
Instead of being angry, Toad is mesmerised and instantly loses all interest in caravaning, instead he is besotted by automobiles and loses no time to buy his own. This leads him into even more trouble...

Wonderful children's classic, not to be missed! The new edition, with illustrations by Kenneth Grahame, is beautiful. Reminds me of Runt Farm and its Puddlefoot Pond, Picnic Hill and the Kitchen Garden . . .

I have wonderful childhood memories of reading this book, and now live in Lerryn, the gorgeous Cornish hamlet, that was thought to be the inspiration for the book. as I sit by the river, on a calm summer's day, and can imagine the characters floating by in a little boat.
I have just purchased a 10 book set for my Grand-children, who will grow up with appreciation for both the books, and their beautiful rural surroundings.

Sorry, not my cup of tea.
susannaduffy says:
I remember it well from my school days, to tell you the truth it seemed to be set on another planet from where I was standing. I didn't appreciate it until I was in my 30s. Perhaps you have to understand England, and the English, to get into the flow of the characters.

Who was your favourite character?
Toad of Toad Hall
The play omits much of the action in the novel and just takes the story of foolish, impetuous Toad and his adventures which involve his friends, Rat, Mole and Badger and culminate with the battle with the weasels.
Since 1929 the play has been performed regularly and is a favourite with children especially at Christmas time.

- Lovely lens! Lensrolling to the Runt Farm books for ages 6-10. Readers who love Wind in the Willows will love Runt Farm, too -- cozy, classic illustrations with a modern twist. And you have to keep on the lookout for weasels!

- Love this book and this lens! I remember going to see "Toad of Toad Hall" performed on stage when I was little and I never stopped talking about it for years. My dad used to read the book to me every night. My daughter loves it now. Thanks for reminding me!
