The Wind in the Willows
Ranked #3,175 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #116,169 overall
Welcome to the Riverbank
Wind in the Willows is a classic tale about animals of the riverbank and has delighted children and adults for 100 years with the adventures of Mr Toad, Ratty, Mole and Badger.
It is a lovely story with excitement but without being too frightening. It can open the door to the world of books for young children and show them that their own imagined visions of a tale can be as gripping as anything on television or their computers.

The story opens on the riverbank on a beautiful sunny day. This is the day that Mole meets Ratty and they get on famously. They spend days together with Ratty showing Mole the ways of the river and takes him out in his boat.
Eventually, he takes Mole to meet his friend Mr Toad of Toad Hall, a reckless character given to sudden enthusiasms. When they arrive at Toad Hall, Toad is waxing lyrical about life on the open road in a horse drawn caravan and talks them into accompanying him.
At this time, motor cars were new and there were very few on the roads. As they ride along on the caravan, a car drives past them and frightens the horse so it bolts and badly damages the caravan.
Instead of being angry, Toad is mesmerised and instantly loses all interest in caravaning, instead he is besotted by automobiles and loses no time to buy his own. This leads him into even more trouble...

Wonderful children's classic, not to be missed! The new edition, with illustrations by Kenneth Grahame, is beautiful. Reminds me of Runt Farm and its Puddlefoot Pond, Picnic Hill and the Kitchen Garden . . .

A wonderful book; loved it! But then I've always been fond of stories about talking animals.

Sorry, not my cup of tea.
susannaduffy says:
I remember it well from my school days, to tell you the truth it seemed to be set on another planet from where I was standing. I didn't appreciate it until I was in my 30s. Perhaps you have to understand England, and the English, to get into the flow of the characters.

Who was your favourite character?
Toad of Toad Hall
There have been many adaptations of this classic novel and the best known is probably Toad of Toad Hall adapted for the stage by children's author A.A. Milne in 1929.
The play omits much of the action in the novel and just takes the story of foolish, impetuous Toad and his adventures which involve his friends, Rat, Mole and Badger and culminate with the battle with the weasels.
Since 1929 the play has been performed regularly and is a favourite with children especially at Christmas time.
