Window or Aisle Seat

Ranked #253 in Travel & Places, #14,538 overall

View or Convenience?

When it comes to air travel, nobody that I know of wants a middle seat. But a lot of people clamor for either a window or an aisle seat.

The perks of the window seat: You get to enjoy a view of the land below, clouds, sunsets, and other things that help pass the time. You're also somewhat more insulated from people passing by in the aisle.

The perks of the aisle seat: It's easier to get out of your seat and head for the bathroom. It's also the most strategic location if you have to rush to get on a connecting flight.

The Window Seat

Abhinav says:

Window Seat offcourse :)

BoyScoutPopcorn says:

I like the window and so does my dad. My mom prefers the aisle.

Brownmole says:

Window seat. The view is nice for departure and arrival, and if you're flying when it's daytime, the clouds are quite nice. And though the aisle seat is easier for getting up to go to the bathroom, just don't drink too much.

TravelingRae says:

window, so I can scrunch up against the wall and have a feeling of privacy

rakna says:

window

PositiveChristian says:

I would much prefer to enjoy the view

I Fly says:

The cockpit -- the view is better, you get service from the inflight crew and there's no fee for an aisle seat.

shiv says:

yes

Remember says:

the feel of freedom get being able to see out

Trev says:

Window. I love to look out at God's Creation. Even though I use the bathroom a lot on airplanes because I consume many liquids, I just hope that the people next to me don't mind.

Taranjeet Singh says:

because it is going to be my first time :)

eifl says:

I enjoy viewing sceneries..

b says:

pref in order:

bulkhead window, bulkhead aisle, exit row window, exit row aisle, bulkhead middle, exit row middle, and then any other window, any other aisle.

the bulkhead and exit row middle seats are actually more preferable for me since the extra legroom or at least no one reclining into me is enough to offset the fact that it's a middle seat!

bn says:

the bulkhead window seat! no extremely overweight seat-mate to deal with due to the fixed armrests, the ability to get to the aisle without having my seatmates get up (also possible in exit rows), and no one reclining into me.

ABID SULTAN RASHID says:

WINDOW

Mark Ean says:

i travel a lot for business. i tend to read what i need to for my meetings . i dont get bothered while in the window seat. i sit down and am able to get stuck in to my business with a clear head.

windowlover says:

love it. rest my head look out...wow

maryspeller says:

ooops I clicked aisle by mistake

Keith says:

I always sit in the window seat because I like looking outside, but I ALWAYS have to go the toilet, so I annoy a whole lot of people too (but maybe that's why I like the window seats).

Matt says:

Window seats are much better because the feel of freedom you get being able to see out. On a packed train or plane it's perfect for escaping.

The Aisle Seat

lovy says:

can at least breathe

Dr,Wattz says:

I like to fuck alot so i take the aisle

Dr,Wattz says:

I love the aisle seat

homebuddy says:

I go to the bathroom CONSTANTLY so an aisle seat is perfect for me.

zalim says:

any day an aisle seat to check the fit air hostesses......

kunal says:

aisle...get to see the air hostess more easily ;)

Churchmouse says:

Because most of our flights are long haul from New Zealand (anywhere is a long journey!) I prefer the aisle to be able to get out and stretch often. I am also a little claustrophobic so it makes me feel a little less frightened and more able to escape if I need to.

Laila says:

aisle because its more practical, but if you are the type of person who enjoys watching the land, clouds, moon, stars etc. and you don't mind sitting there for ages then window would be better however if you r the person who cant sit for such long time and needs to go to the toilet all the time or you just wanna look at yourself in the mirror then sit on the aisle seat.

suresh says:

aisle

adfsadfs says:

Aisle, because I have long legs. It's better to put kids at the window so they have something to watch and distract them while their ears are hurting them.

TodTrollington says:

Aisle so i can get up and pee and fake peeing as much i want without having to wait because the twopeople next to me are on sleeping pills...

Maddy says:

Aisle seat, no doubt in my mind. Its more comfortable and extra leg space doesn't hurt either. who cares about the view on a 10-15 hr flight, most of the times - the windows are shut down too

JP says:

Travelling more than 8 hours in a plane means that you might need to stand up and stretch your legs... If you re in the window seat, and the person next to you is asleep you wont be able to stand up, unless you wake him up.
Plus, in the aisle you get extra space on the side to stretch you legs.

oniArts says:

The Aisle Seat is better because I can move freely!

ClariNerd says:

I have found from experience that the window seat is better until the fifteenth flight over the same area. Also, being next to a fat guy who's also asleep makes getting to the bathroom a NIGHTMARE.

frequentflyer says:

Aisle seat is probably the most convenient, the only problem is that I have broad shoulders and people brush over all the time.

andy scott says:

i travel a lot from the uk to the falkland islands which is an 18hr flight with 1 stop, also fly to ascension islands that is a 9hr flight and thailand 12hrs.
To be honest if the plane is full then id choose an aisle seat, as these are all long haul flights you can stretch your legs out into the aisle, get up when you like and walk around or go to the toilet.
with a middle row or window seat you dont have that option.

I know people like to choose the window seat but once your 30,000ft into the air there really isnt anything to see. And not only that alot of the time they close the shutters so people can sleep.
If its a short haul flight then to be honest what seat you have doesnt really matter and if your flying ryan air at 20p a pop to use the toilet you wont want to get up much ;).
But long haul flights then its an aisle seat or if your very lucky and you get a middle seat with nobody sat either side of you then you can lift the arm rests and lay flat out.

Peter.Murray says:

Being tall and having flown in small planes, I prefer non-window seats for the extra space.

Ratnam says:

YES

Doir says:

In a worst-case scenario, the people in the window seats get hit by another plane first.

Why Not Have the Best of Both Worlds?

The Aisle and Window Seat in One

On some airplanes, you can have both an aisle AND a window seat rolled in one! For example, if you're flying on an Embraer ERJ-145, the left side of the plane is entirely devoted to a single line of seats. It's an asymmetrical 1+2 layout.

Unfortunately, these kinds of seats tend to be on the smaller planes meant for shorter routes. Sometimes there will be similar seats available on bigger planes in the business class section.

Here's a list of some commercial airline planes that have the same kind of seating arrangement:

  • Embraer ERJ-135

  • Embraer ERJ-145

  • Embraer Brasilia 120ER

  • Saab 340B (SF3)

1+2 seating layout for business/elite class only:

  • Embraer 170 (E70)

  • Canadair Regional Jet 900 (CRJ)

  • 777-200LR (1+2+1)

Tips for Getting the Best Airline Seats

Getting the Best Seat on the Plane...

Check in early. These days, a lot of airlines will let you check in online up to 24 hours in advance and print your own boarding pass. The sooner you do it, the better. If you don't check in online, or if you don't do it soon enough, all the other people will take the best seats.

If you're traveling as a couple, reserve an aisle and window seat. Airlines know that no one wants the middle seat, so those are assigned last. Unless you're on an especially crowded flight, the two of you have a good chance of getting three seats to yourself.

The downside is that if the plane is full, you'll have some stranger sitting between the two of you.

Know the plane you'll be flying on. Check your flight confirmation to see if there's a section showing the type of aircraft you'll be flying on. Then visit a website like SeatGuru and look up the aircraft. This will show you a layout of the best and worst seats on the plane.

Will You Get Charged for a Window or Aisle Seat?

As unreasonable as it might sound, US Airways has started charging passengers extra for certain window and aisle seats. That fee could be anywhere from $5 to $30. It's a reflection of the rising costs of fuel and how badly the airlines are doing.

So, how much is that seat worth to you?
