Windows Home Server is a brilliant way to store files and protect your data.

Do you have more than one computer in your home? Do you have a million digital photos you couldn't imagine losing? Have you ripped every single one of your CD's to your PC and wondering what happened to your hard drive space? Are you petrified about losing any of your data and need some type of easy plan to backup your info?

If you answered yes to more than one of these questions a Windows Home Server System may be the solution for you. Microsoft Windows Home Server software is a a very simple (in form and function anyway) operating system that has built in backup and file sharing capabilities to make a home owners life easy without adding the complexity of managing a true server.

My Thoughts on Windows Home Server

First a little background on me, just to help define my credibility. Although I have been out of the computer industry for three years I still like to keep myself geekified. I really like my toys! I currently have three PC's in my office, my kids have one PC and a notebook and I have my own notebook. In addition I have two XBox 360's configured to all work with my Media Centre PC so I can stream TV, videos, music and photos to any PC or TV in the house.

I spent 15 years selling computer hardware ranging from mice to high end servers and network equipment to computer dealers and companies who resold these products. During this time I was quite technical and have built numerous PC's for myself and others from scratch, including installing OS's and various software components.

Currently I operate a business out of my home and between business files, thousands of hi-resolution digital photos, well over 200 CD's ripped to a hard drive, videos, forms and everything else in between, my files are important to me! I have been using an external USB hard drive for backup for quite a while, but it has been hit and miss. My reminders pop up and if I have time I backup and copy the appropriate files. If I don't have time, hopefully nothing crashes before I backup, I have been lucky so far!

It was high time I found a better solution and I just happened to be talking to another geek buddy who was talking about Windows Home Server. He was mostly excited about the storage capability and then being able to access everything remotely. While the remote access capabilities didn't excite me to much, the ability to have a separate storage facility for all my data did!

I like doing some research on products before I buy them, so my initial foray into learning about Microsoft Home Server began. Hey it's my money and I hope you do your homework too!

The more I researched, the more I liked it. So here are some of the highlights.

Automated daily backup of all of my PC's - Every night it creates a snapshot of all my PC's, You just need to install the Connect Software and it even updates you if there is a problem. You can even restore files that are accidentally deleted or the entire hard drive if there is a catastrophic drive failure.

Single storage center for all my data - videos, photos, accounting backups, contact info, recorded TV shows all available centrally. They are also available anywhere with internet connectivity via secure remote access! This can also be disabled if security is a concern.

Easy expansion - with the pre-configured systems from HP or Acer you can add drive bays until your system is full.

Data duplication - with multiple drives in your system Windows Home Server can configure itself to duplicate your data files. Now your data is backed up, duplicated on a separate hard drive and extra secure!

When I found out it also supported sharing across my XBox's to allow photo sharing and video streaming to all my TV's I was sold on the product. Now it was just a matter of finding the right solution for me.

How Do You Backup

Losing your data is a horrible experience, but it usually takes losing some of it before many people start backing up.

I ended up buying an Acer!

Acer Aspire AH340-UA230N Home Server

The Acer Aspire H340 had everything I needed. The unit I purchased had 2 GB's of memory pre-installed and came with a 1 TB drive. I ended up adding a second TB so now I was set!

The setup was fast and easy, the second drive was installable without the use of tools and was instantly found. Overall a great experience, which is why I recommend this product!

Windows Home Server Software & Systems

If you are a real techy and have spare computer bits lying around everywhere you probably want to look at the Windows Home Server Software package so you can build your own server.
For ease of use and a slick simple setup though, you cannot go wrong with the pre-built bundles from HP or Acer. Hot swap drives, small form factors and optimized chassis's make these a dream to set up and keep running.

A video of someone installing Windows Home Server

The video runs just over 9 minutes, has some dubious musical choices, some unfocused video sections, some unrecommended places to store computer parts but it does show how simple and quick the install can be!

I use SyncToy to get my photos, videos, and music onto the WHS shares. I still consider my main machine my "source". My Media Center PC only points to the WHS so people can use but not abuse the data.

That does sound a bit concerning, I haven't heard of anyone else with the same problem. You might want to look into the Advanced Admin Console plugin so you can easily get into the administrative tools. From there you can access the event viewer which may help determine what happened. With that information you can narrow down the problem hopefully.

I started getting the red light last night, when I think the WHS crashed or something, I was not able to connect (through the connector or via remote desktop) to it from any of my computers after that even after restarting the server many times. I had to reset the system. Thankfully the data is still there, but I had to create the user accounts again. I am not sure what happened there. I am little nervous about this incident, since I did not expect it to fail just after a couple of days after I turned it on.

Thnaks for the info. That was the reason for the red light. Once I fixed the error messages all is well. Thnaks for the quick response. My next project is getting the remote to work withe comcast gateway.
