Windows XP and Repair

There are few things more upsetting than your computer getting suddenly sick or even getting more and more broken after time. Windows XP and repair can be harrowing experience.

You may suddenly find that you can't boot and your system gives you some cryptic message like

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM, you get frequent or disruptive BSODs (blue screens of death), you contract a severe virus infection or your system slows to a crawl and you keep on getting weird errors.

What are do you do is such a situation?

XP Repair Options

You have a number of choices when XP problems arise.

1. You can call a PC repair company or bring it in to a repair site.

This will generally set you back at least $200. Additionally, some common sales and repair outlets don't have the most experienced repair people. If you are like most of the world, you never backed up your data and lost the original program installation CDs. You face the risk of getting the system repaired but losing all your programs and data if the repair is not done right.

2. You can do it yourself getting advice from the geeks online

As you can imagine, fixing the guts of XP can be something like major surgery. You have to be very careful that your recovery doesn't result in a fresh new version of XP on your system without any of your programs and data.

If you are lucky, your system may be eligible for a repair install which will fix your XP and leave everything else intact. However, this recovery does not take into account XP upgrades called service packs. You have to do some fancy footwork to get the service packs back in place.

XP recovery has an option called a repair install that will fix things but you have to be very careful to not confuse this with the trecovery console. You also have to do some fancy stuff to avoid the blaster worm. You also may need to know some arcane details about your cpu.

How Does Reimage Work?

The makers of Reimage have compiled a huge database which identifies what belongs in XP and what doesn't. This includes programs and applications commonly used in Windows.
