How to make a kite using Koloron

Another application for the versatile Koloron art fabric

For those of you looking for an easy and fun thing to do with the kids try making a kite or windsock out of Koloron art fabric. Koloron lets you paint your kite and that's really fun.

Koloron art fabric has been popular with kite makers for some years because it is as easy to handle as paper yet is as strong as fabric. And when the kite is complete it can be painted - so anything from faces to dragons, sharks to hawks gives your kite personality.

It's a great weekend activity as it combines simple, fast construction with the entertainment of painting it before it is flown. There are hundreds of kite and windsock patterns to follow, start with something simple like a square rigid frame kite.Later you can progress to soft-framed kites and windsocks.

Using Koloron is easy

When working with Koloron effective joins are made either with stitching or with PVA. Where extra strength is needed double roll hems and glue thoroughly and the fabric will take the strongest winds. Decorate with any form of paint and apply with brush, pen or spray - it really is up to you and the effect you want.

For the windsock above I used a rubber ring for the mouth, as I wanted to catch as much air as possible. There is a small hole at the back to let the air pass out. I fly these windsocks from a taut line between two buildings and when you get a number of them flying together the effect is stunning.

I have designed and painted many types, some up to ten feet long. A little research on the Web repays the effort; take a look at Chinese kites and dragon windsocks in particular.
