Biography Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill won The Nobel Prize in Literature 1953.

He was born on 30 November 1874 at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire and he died on 24 January 1965 28 Hyde Park Gate, London

He studied at  Harrow (1888) and Royal Military College, Sandhurst (graduated in 1894)

Family:  His father was, Lord Randolph Churchill, and his mother Jennie Jerome. Churchill was the elder of two sons. He was married to Clementine Hozier, and had one son and four daughters

Hobbies: Painting, polo, board games

Became PM: Jan. 23, 1901, Churchill became a member of Parliament for Oldham (Lancashire). Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill 1940/1945 and 1951/1955 (Conservatibe)

Hold his "Maiden Speech" : 18 February 1901 in the debate on the King's Speech on the Boer War

He was nicknamed: "Winnie"

Childhood - World War 1 - Time up to World War II

1888:Winston Churchill entered Harrow (never made the upper school)

1894: Graduated from the "Royal Military College" at Sandhurst. He was commissioned in the 4th Hussars.

A little while later he served as a military observer with the Spanish forces in Cuba

1897: Served in the Indian army (Malakand Expedition)

1898: His first book appeared "The Story of the Malakand Field Force"

1900: Wrote a novel ""Savrola" (anticipated later developments in history)

1899: Was sent as a war correspondent for the London Morning Post(South African War). He was captured, taken to a prison camp in Pretoria, made a dramatic escape. This made him famous all around the world

Jan. 23, 1901: He became a member of Parliament for Oldham (Lancashire). Later became Undersecretary of State for the colonies.

1906: He published lord Randolph Churchill (2 vols.)

1908: Winston Churchill married Clementine Hozier. They had one son and four daughters.They each had a special nickname: Diana (Puppy Kitten), Randolph (Chum Bolly),Sarah (Bumble Bee) and Marigold (Duckadilly)

1908/1910: Became President of the Board of Trade

1910/1911 : Home Secretary

1916: Lloyd George appointed him Minister for Munitions (he developed the use of the tank in warfare)

After World War I : Winston Churchill started to paint (this passion will remain throughout his life)

1922 elections : Lost his seat in Parliament

1939: WWII Started. Was recalled as "first lord of the admiralty"

May 1940/1945 : He held supreme command (Prime Minister and Minister of Defense)

The time after World War 2

After WW II: Wrote a personal history about The Second World War (6 vols., 1948-1953)

October 1951: At 77, he became again Prime Minister and Minister of Defense

1953: Received the Nobel Price in literature

April 1955: Aged 80, he resigned as Prime Minister

April 1963: Received the honor of being made an "Honorary American Citizen (Special act of the US Congress)

Januar 24, 1965 : Aged 90 he died in London

In 2005 a dedicated Churchill Museum was opened by the Queen within the Cabinet War Rooms in London
