Wireless Pet Fence Basics
A wireless pet fence can be used for different animals, but is most commonly used to train dogs to stay in a specific area. They are very popular for dog owners who live in rural or suburban areas without traditional fencing. Wireless fence systems are easy to set up and maintain, and can be installed in less than half an hour.

Wireless Fence Equipment
A wireless pet fence consists of a radio transmitter and a receiver collar
The wireless fence containment system consists of two pieces of equipment: the transmitter unit and the receiver collar(s).The transmitter unit plugs in to any 120V outlet, and transmits a radio signal in a radius around the unit that is user programmable. Most devices can be set for only a few few all the way up to 100 feet or more. You need to consider the radius of the radio signal when placing your transmitter so that it reaches the area you want.
After you have the transmitter unit set up, you can define the perimeter of the radio signal range by placing small wire flags into the ground. These not only help you know what the boundary is, but also help you train your dog by giving him a visual cues as to where his boundary ends.
The final step is to place the adjustable receiver collar onto your dog. This special receiver monitors whether it is within the signal range of the transmitter. The collar generally gives some kind of a warning signal when your dog approaches the limits of the invisible fence. This warning is usually in the form of an audible beep. Most pet owners train their dogs to respond to this beep by showing them the boundary flags and scolding "No!"
If, however, the dog ignores the warning beep and goes beyond the range of the radio signal, the collar emits a mild static energy pulse to train the dog not to go any further. This electric pulse is strong enough to startle and deter your dog, but won't harm him. After a few times going beyond the boundaries, most dogs quickly learn to stay within the limits.

Two Different Wireless Technologies
Although the basics are the same for the most part, there are two very different technologies you will find as you shop for a wireless dog fence. They are WiFi and Radio. The WiFi technology uses 802.15 protocol to transmit a signal back and forth from the collar worn on the dog. A WiFI system can provide a circular containment area up to 360 feet in diameter from the base station transmitter. A radio signal system has a range of less than 200 feet. Of course, the amount of coverage area will depend greatly on the conditions of your particular property. most WiFi systems will not operate well in dense trees or on properties with large metal objects such as detached garages or sheds. The WiFi system also does not function in dwellings with aluminum siding or metal roofs.
Radio controlled fences do not have problems with the trees and buildings, but also does not have as large a range. You need to assess the unique features of your property to determine which system best fits your needs. Either system is and investment (prices are around $300), although the WiFi wireless fence systems generally cost more.
