Yosemite Valley - March 2007

Ansel Adams - A Legend in Nature Photography

In March, 2007, I spent a week exploring Yosemite. One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to Ansel Adams' Gallery in Yosemite Valley.

I admit to never being Ansel's biggest fan. I used to think, it's just a bunch of black and white nature photos. Why all the fuss? Well, now I know better. Ansel Adams had an unusual eye for composition and knew when and where to show up. He understood timing and contrast, shadow and light.

When we arrived at his gallery, serious Ansel Adams aficionados were thoughtfully browsing his collection. The gallery was small, and the selections were both framed and unframed, matted or plain prints. But there wasn't anything plain about the price. Adams' life's work still opens wallets and receives a whopping amount per print.

This charming gift shop/gallery combo features Adams' prints, as well as videos, Native American crafts, and books about photography and more specifically, Yosemite Valley. Admission is free.

For the Valentine with a passion for photography, what do you get? A tripod? Hmmm. Probably already has one. A new lens? Maybe. A magazine subscription? Might be nice, and it's a gift that keeps on giving for a full year.

I've selected some favorites below.

I'm sold on Canon products, but still have my trusty Nikon. Once I got my hands on a Canon SLR, I fell in love with its capability. I like experimenting and putting my lenses through their paces. There's always more to learn - always.

This Plexo features Canon, but I welcome your favorite suggestions in any brand camera. Leave a comment as to why you prefer that camera, too. Thanks!

♥If the photography in your life consists mostly of casual photos with family--pictures of the kids, family trips, special events, Photoshop Elements 6 is a fantastic photo editing software. It's appealing because it delivers a generous set of tools for common fixes, and has been called a pared-down version of Photoshop for users who don't need to get into a lot of technical photo editing.

Quick Edit and Guided Edit are quick fixes for family photos or simple graphics, but for more technical needs, I'd certainly stick to Full Edit. Quick Edit is suitable for a photo-editing novice, but unfortunately, it doesn't offer much in the way of explaining the names of various tools, or the reasoning behind their use. Transitioning from PS Elements 6 to Photoshop would be difficult unless you spent time working in a meatier mode.

What's not to love about the Create mode? Choose between Projects and Artistic, which will launch you in entirely different directions. Under the Projects tab, you can design a photo book with step-by-step instructions, or an attractive Web Gallery. Create your own greeting cards, CD jacket, Photo Collage, and much more!

Adobe Lightroom 2 is a good choice for intermediate and professionals, especially those of us who work exclusively in RAW format. Read the review.
Photographers, graphic artists, and Web designers have long considered Photoshop to be the industry standard for creative projects. Its array of amazing tools adds wings to an idea from the first spark to the final pre-press specs.

Photoshop CS3 Extended has been called a huge breakthrough, as it throws the door wide open for the creative pursuits of professionals who work in manufacturing, television production, architecture, engineering, and certain medical fields in which specialized images are needed. Don't be scared off by all that; it's still the Photoshop you've grown to love, with added features to streamline your workflow. Read the review.
