An introduction to the RHS Garden at Wisley
The garden combines science, horticultural endeadours and a pleasant environment for taking a walk. It's split into different gardens each focusing on different aspects of garden horticulture.
Below you can make a virtual visit to the garden with the help of maps, slideshows, photos, sketches and videos - along with descriptions of the garden from the RHS and organisations recommending it as a place to visit.
This site is a work in progress and more links will be added in future. I'm planning to post photos relating to different parts of the garden so check back to see how it progresses!

Planning a trip to RHS Wisley
The logistics and the facilities within the flagship garden of the Royal Horticultural Society
In 1903 on the death of Mr Wilson, Sir Thomas Hanbury bought the estate and presented it in trust to the R.H.S.
Over the last 100+ years, the face of Wisley has changed, so it is now a world-class garden in its own right. Plus it continues to change.
A closer look reveals the real value of Wisley in horticultural terms:
- In the trials fields, the finest flowers and vegetables are identified from the countless new introductions.
- Elsewhere in the garden, cultivation techniques, such as composting or pleaching, are tried and tested,
- a series of model gardens answers the needs of a variety of conditions and circumstances.
- The library at RHS Garden Wisley holds significant collections on practical gardening, garden history and design, and fruit and vegetable gardening. All garden visitors are welcome and it is particularly relevant to amateur and professional gardeners, and students of garden design or garden history.

Perspectives on Wisley
- RHS Garden, Wisley | GardenVisit.com, the garden landscape guide
- The garden was established by George Wilson, a chemist and horticulturalist, and given to the RHS in 1903. It continues to be developed. Edward White designed the rock garden in 1911. Woodland, heather and bog gardens were added. Lanning Roper designed a walled canal garden in the 1960s. There are many demonstration gardens and, of course, an excellent plant collection.

- Travels with a Sketchbook in.......: Wisley in Autumn - and the National Fruit Show
- I went to the RHS Garden at Wisley last Friday for the start of their Autumn Festival and National Fruit Show. Next to all the wonderful displays of apples and pears, they have lots of stalls with lovely tempting food. I resisted the charms of the slabs of organic chocolate with fruity bits at the Chocolate Alchemist but came away with a game pie, a bottle of Thai infused olive oil and stem ginger marmalade!
- Travels with a Sketchbook in.......: Blooming Wisley
- We visited Wisley last Saturday on the way home from the anniversary celebration in Hampshire - and I went to their Annual Iris Show and also saw the Iris Trial Beds in their full glory - with (I think) Iris Society members pondering the latest blooms! I was especially pleased as I love irises and managed to take rather a lot of photographs of all the different coloured blooms both indoors at the show and outdoors at the trial beds.
