Don't board that ship!

A record deal ain't what it used to be. Instead of working to help great musicians off the runway and into their careers, the major labels now exist only to guard a territory that doesn't belong to them anymore.

That's why Without a Label is here-- to show you (the great musician) that it can be done, and then to show you how... all without the weight of a recording contract holding you back.

Don't board the ship when it's sinking; just learn to swim instead.

What's our goal?

I warn you: it's uncomfortably bold.

The Big,
Hairy,
Audacious,
Retarded,
Perfect goal.

We don't just want to revamp the system. We don't just want to fix the major labels. We're not trying to update the status quo or jumpstart a dead engine.

Instead, we're smashing it. With a hammer. We're abandoning the old system, the old gatekeepers, the old conventions. We're walking away because the system isn't just broken or behind; it's all wrong.

We've decided instead to rewrite the manual. We're doing it together, independent of the conventions.

That's because this fact: we don't need permission to be stars. We don't need a producer or label executive to tell us, "You're going to be a hit." We already know it's true.

Our Rockstars

are people who invent.

There are those we'd like to thank, for making Without a Label so worthwhile.

We don't typically meet up face-to-face as a group; instead we have this online meeting place. Those who show up and contribute-- who share their knowledge and their most radical, unheard-of ideas are the ones who make this place incredible.

If you think you'd like to be one of those people, you should join. Revolutionaries welcome.

The Blog

The internet's backward-est thoughts and ideas.

About once a day, these brief little updates seem to appear out of nowhere. It's a mystery, but we haven't really tried to stop it. We kinda like the updates, actually.

The Turning Point

We all agree that it's different now. We don't agree on why.

At some point in the last century, a huge change came along, possibly wearing a disguise or those nose-and-mustache-glasses that make people look like Peter Sellers (unless it's Peter Sellers wearing them, then he looks like Tom Sellick).

My point: nobody knows when the big change came along that made business-as-usual so impossible for the music industry (not that it was necessarily a bad change). So let's put it to a vote.

It's only for those who know they're meant to change the world. We don't need anyone telling us it can't be done, or that the establishment will never change. There's already a guy doing that, and he runs the establishment.

We want people who know they're great. People who were born with music playing in their heads, who want to reinvent the whole industry -- who know it can be done -- are the only ones powerful enough to break the whole thing apart and rebuilt it better.

So, only click here if you can answer the question, "How would you change the music industry?"
