The Bard of Wales ~ Wizard coloring the Azure Sea

1/11/09

I am the Bard of Wales, Seer and Enchanter held in great reknown. Fierce my visage, fierce my pride.

In my gown of amethyst, I walk among the starry blossoms in the glade, and dream of things beyond belief. Waving my rod in a circle on the sod, I cast my spells, over and over, til they are woven with the secret key. I am the great Wizard coloring the azure sea.

Vaster grows the stature of the master;
Mystic flashes swing and raster.
Muttering the Runes averse,
mad with many a mocking verse.
The magical Wizard crafts his spell,
for whose fate is this the knell?

Merlin the Wizard coloring his Manuscripts with enchanted Spells

06/09/09

Merlin must counsel the King well, in order that the King will be successful in driving out the Saxons to save Camelot and Britain.

The great wizard, Merlin, ponders his spells and incantations.

Firstly, these incantations begin with Merlin the Wizard coloring his Manuscripts with enchanted Spells. He invokes the Violet Spell to give power to his Magic. To protect the King and Knights, he invokes the White Spell. He invokes the Red Spell, to give the Knights courage, and strength. For victory in battle, he invokes the Green Spell. And to banish the enemy from the great land, he invokes the Black Spell. With each colored spell he colors the quatrains of the Great Manuscripts and then gazes into his crystal ball and views the battle and the victory of his countrymen.

Britain became an island of small kingdoms after the Roman withdrawal. King Arthur needed to unify the petty kings of Britain, and to do this he formed the Round Table.

Was Arthur the son of Uther?

Was the Isle of Man the mythical Camelot during this period?

The Welsh Triads state there were three baptismal bards: Taliesin (Chief of Bards), and Myrddin Wyllt, and Myrddin Emrys.

Taliesin (Chief of Bards or chief of poets)

Taliesin, meaning " radiant brow" was adopted by Elffin, the son of Gwyddno Garanhir, and it is said that Taliesin prophesied correctly the manner and imminence of Maelgwn's death from the Yellow Plague. Taliesin was a renowned bard who sang at the courts of at least three Celtic British kings.

Merlinus Caledonensis, (Myrddin Wyllt)

This Myrddin was not associated with King Arthur and existed after the Arthurian period. The earliest Welsh poems about Myrddin legend depict him as a wretched madman living in the Caledonian Forest, ruminating on his former existence and the disaster that brought him low: the death of his lord Gwenddolau, whom he served as bard.

Another tale, 'The Two Dragons', depicts Merlin as having the gift of Vision. Merlin's consul was sought and he explained why there was a problem in building a castle. He revealed there was an underground lake, with two sleeping dragons, a white one and red one.

Merlin Ambrosius, (Myrddin Emrys)

This Myrddin is best known as the mighty wizard in the stories of King Arthur of Britain. Geoffrey of Monmouth introduced Merlin into the mythos of King Arthur. The name Myrddin is altered to Merlin.

"Geoffrey wrote a book called History of the Kings of Britain in the 12th century. There was a bard and prophet in Wales called Myrddin. Legends say that his father was not human and that he also predicted the Saxons' victory over the English.

Geoffrey named his character Merlinus, as opposed to Merdinus (Merdinus is the correct Latin version of Myrddin) because Merdinus sounds like the vulgar French word "merde" (which means "shit") and would be unpleasant for his Anglo-Norman audience. " Source

Merlin had a wizard coloring vision of the red dragon (Britons) and the white dragon (Saxons who invaded Britain in the 5th and 6th centuries) fighting beneath Dinas Emrys. In Britain, the dragon is now associated with Wales and the national flag displays a red dragon (see top right).

"Alas for the Red Dragon, for its end is near. Its cavernous dens shall be occupied by the White Dragon, which stands for the Saxons which you have invited over. The Red Dragon represents the people of Britain, who will be overrun by the White One..." (Geoffrey of Monmouth 171)

Merlin the Wizard coloring purple as a symbol of harmony, oaks and acorns, roved the enchanted Forest.

09/07/09

The forest of Brocéliande, from which the legends of Merlin and King Arthur unfold, is located in Brittany. The enchanted forest of Brocéliande was a vast primeval forest which in the first centuries A.D. covered the interior of Brittany. This was known as King Arthur's Forest.

Merlin the Magician heralds from the magical Paimpont Forest, also known as Brocéliande. The Forest is in the French commune of Paimpont, near the city of Rennes in Brittany.

Merlin's father was a demon and he possessed his father's power. Merlin first appears before King Arthur as a boy. The King wanted to kill him because of his demon blood, which the people thought was responsible for the Castle falling apart.

Merlin advised the King that this is because of an underground pool beneath the castle where two Dragons fight one another. The King ordered a hole be dug under the Castle and two Dragons did indeed fly out and fight one another. The two Dragons are the symbols for Saxons (White Dragon) and Britons (Red Dragon).

Camelot the legendary court has not been positively placed in geography, though modern historian/archaeologist Leslie Alcock makes a good case for Cadbury Castle being Camelot. Cadbury was a castle in Romano-British times.

Merlin advised the King to search for the Holy Grail, the chalice from which the Christ drank during the Last Supper; that sacred object with magical properties to grant immortality and bring peace and harmony among peoples. Merlin used his other-worldly skills for good to help King Arthur in his search for the Holy Grail.

The Lady of the Lake, Vivienne, was a water nymph. After the death of Lancelot's father, she abducted Lancelot and reared Lancelot beneath the waters of her Lake in a Crystal Palace near the Château of Comper in the Valley-of-No-Return (Val sans Retour), and cured him when he went mad.

Lancelot became Sir Lancelot and one of the Knights of the Round Table. King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table were: Agravaine, Bedivere, Bors, Calogrenant, Gaheris, Galahad, Gareth, Gawain, Geraint, Kay, Lamorak, Lancelot, Palamedes, Percival, Sagramore, Tristan, and Ywain. Shadows Over Camelot: Merlins Company

Merlin would often sit in contemplation on a rock known as Merlin's seat. The seat is located along the rim of the Valley-of-No-Return. Merlin the Wizard coloring purple as a symbol of harmony, oaks and acorns, roved the enchanted Paimpont Forest.

Merlin met the Lady of the Lake, "a creature to bewitch a sorcerer", at the Fountain of Barenton, in Brittany.

She enchanted Merlin and because he fell so deeply in love with her, he taught her all his magical powers. Eventually her powers outshone those of Merlin, and due to rivalry she imprisoned him inside the Glass Tower.

The Lady of the Lake raised the magical Excalibur Sword from her lake to the sky and presented it to King Arthur. Another story tells of the Excalibur Sword embedded in a stone and Merlin says to Arthur "the person who can pull the sword out of the rock is the rightful king". Arthur was the only one who could do so, so he became king.

She usurped Merlin's old role as King's advisor, but Merlin's fall contributed to the end of the King's reign, and the Lady reclaimed Excalibur at the Battle of Camlann, where the King was killed. The sword was hurled deep into the murky depths of the Lady's Lake.

Morgan le Fay, Lady of the Lake

The Lady of the Lake was believed to be Morgan le Fay, a water nymph. Other sources say she was King Arthur's half-sister. "Since the Lady of the Lake's place as Merlin's student and lover was largely overtaken by Morgan Le Fay, a lady whose very name in Breton indicates a water-nymph, it seems that the two were aspects of the same character. Indeed, as both appear among the three queens who escort Arthur to Avalon, she no doubt had a third aspect making up the well-known theme of a Celtic Triple-Goddess." ~ Vivienne, Lady of the Lake was also Morgan le Fay.

She returned once more as one of the three Queens to carry away the mortally wounded Arthur to the Celtic other-world of the Isle of Avalon where he awaits the day when Britain once again needs him to return.

The Lady of the Lake wore shimmering, white robes of the purest samite.

The Book of the Secrets of Merlin

It is believed that Merlin is a fictional character from the writings of Geoffrey of Monmouth.

The Lady of the Lake ~ Other Characters in Arthurian Legend | King Arthur & The Knights of the Round Table
This mysterious female gave Arthur his sword, Excalibur. She stole Lancelot when he was a child and cured him when he went mad. King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table provides history, legend, and everything in between for those interested in Arthurian Legend and Tradition.
Lady of the Lake (Camelot, Arthurian Legend)
The Lady of The Lake was a mysterious female credited with giving King Arthur the legendary sword Excalibur and the mystic scabbard which protected the wearer from dying. She was also credited with abducting Lancelot to her underwater dwelling to be her ward, training him to be the greatest of all knights. Other stories attribute Lancelot du Lac's ("of the Lake") prowess to the Lady of the Lake (with shades of the Achilles myth) baptizing him in a magic pool as a child . In some of the tales, she stole the child Lancelot and cured his madness. This was done so Lancelot could become guard to her weak son Mabuz who was tormented by Iweret.
