There's No Place Like OZ

One of my favorite films of all time is MGM's The Wizard of OZ. Not only is it a visual masterpiece, but it has such a heartfelt, universal story that anyone can understand and love it.

This lens is all about The Wizard of OZ. The film, the characters, the book that inspired the film. All of it.

The Wonderful Wizard of OZ by L. Frank Baum

The Wonderful Wizard of OZ was first published in 1900 and considered by many to be one of the United States first American fantasy myths.

Since its first publication, the OZ myth has found itself into various films, books and stage productions. And, of course, the pop culture references to the book and film throughout a century are innumerable at this point.

Wizard of OZ Movie Trivia

  • Ray Bolger, who played the Scarecrow, was originally slated to play The Tin Man. However, he plead with the director to change roles.
  • Buddy Ebsen was originally slated to play The Tin Man. However, after lead poisoning following make-up tests, he became very ill and was unable to play the part.
  • The white dress under Dorothy's gingham apron was actually a pale pink.
  • Many of Margaret Hamilton's (Wicked Witch) scenes were deleted because the studio considered them too frightening for audiences.
  • Judy Garland's chest had to be bound with a corset in order for her to appear flat chested.
  • Dorothy Gale was almost fitted with a blonde wig and overdone make-up. However, when George Cukor took over the direction (before Fleming), he got rid of the wig and the make-up.

My Wizard of OZ Quilt

Last year, I made a Wizard of OZ quilt. It had nine blocks and each represented a different aspect of the story.

It's hard to pick just one favorite block, but I was fond of both the Wicked Witch block, as it was made from a sketch of mine, and The Tin Man's block.
