Cleveland Radio Station 100.7 WMMS The Glory Years
Ranked #3,855 in Travel & Places, #118,042 overall
If you lived in Cleveland any during the 1970s & 1980s there were a few things you knew. You knew that Brian Sipe was Quarterback for the Browns, that the "Flats" were not a cool place to hang out, that if you needed a T-Shirt Daffy Dan was the only place to go and finally you knew that the best darn radio in Cleveland was being transmitted from 100.7 WMMS The Buzzard.
Me & The Buzzard
I clearly remember listening to Cleveland's WMMS in the early 1980s. They redefined rock and made it fun to listen to the radio. They had free concerts, awesome DJ's and a rockin' playlist. I truly miss real radio. The kind that had people talking. When WMMS played Journey or David Bowie or Styx everyone you knew was listening. You could lean out your car window and pass 10 cars that all were tuned into WMMS. Today it's sad that radio is missing a soul. So this lens is dedicated to the staff and fans who made WMMS an American Icon. The WMMS Link List

- Forget Alan Freed and the Moondog Coronation Ball. Forget the Raspberries, the James Gang, the Dead Boys and the other great bands that got their start in Northeast Ohio. If Cleveland has a national reputation as rock 'n roll town, it's because of a Boston native named John Gorman and the scruffy band of FM radio rebels he led as music and program director at WMMS / 100.7 from 1973 to 1986.

Cleveland Radio Legend Murray Saul Turns 80
By Frank Lewis of the Cleveland Free Times
- Get Down!
- Holiday party, sometime in the '70s. Cleveland-area music business people, from record companies, retail outlets and radio stations. John Gorman, program director for rock station WMMS, is there. So is his colleague and friend Murray Saul, the station salesman known across Northeast Ohio for weekly on-air rants that, for thousands of listeners, officially kick off the weekend.

It wouldn't have been WMMS without Murray Saul the "Get Down" man!
John Gorman
You can't talk about the Buzzard without honoring John Gorman. As Program Director from 1973-1986 he was the power that drove WMMS to greatness.

- This lens brought back so many memories (I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio). I had no idea John Gorman wrote a book -- thanks for the tip! I'll head over to Amazon now and look for it. And you're so right -- the "Flats" are apparently hip now, although no one ever went there in the 70s! Really funny how times (and neighborhoods) change!

- We have a 100.7 here in Boston that plays classic rock that's also a great station (though there's no cool mascot). If I'm ever in the Cleveland area again, I'll be sure to tune in to 100.7!
