Wolves
The 6 Species of the Wolf
There are currently 6 species given the name wolf:The Grey Wolf(Canis lupus)
The Red Wolf (Canis rufus)
The Indian Wolf (Canis indica)
The Himalayan Wolf (Canis himalayaensis)
The Eastern Wolf (Canis lycaon)
Ethiopian Wolf (Canis simensis)
There is a debate concerning a couple of these as to whether they should be considered subspecies of Canis Lupus or species in their own right.
All poster pictures are species of the Grey Wolf.

Wolves are wild creatures, not pets!
If you truly love them, let them be free.
The keeping of wolves is not allowed in many countries, and in the United States, the keeping of pure wolves is prohibited by the U.S Endangered Species Act of 1973.Problems with keeping wolves:
1. Wolf pups need to be socialized before they are 20 days old. After that, it is too late.
2. Wolf pups, being wild creatures at heart, require more socialization than dog puppies.
3. Wolf pups will typically develop behavioural problems if raised without another member of their own kind.
4. Adult wolves are mostly unpredictable, and can become aggressive toward small animals and children.

Call of the Wolf
More reasons why wolves need to be free, not kept as pets.
5. Captive wolves may become shy, withdrawn and depressed. Avoiding eye-contact and hiding from others.6. Wolf pups need wolf milk, not substitute puppy milk, otherwise, the wolf pup could develop cataracts because of arginine deficiency.
7. Wolves need to eat 2 to 5 pounds of good quality meat, not to mention bones and fur.
8. Wolves need lots of exercise.
9. Adult wolves are intelligent and can usually figure out how to escape their pens and cages.
10. According to the American Zoological Association, the minimum housing recommended for a wolf is 12 x 12 feet, increased by 50% for each additional wolf, at least 6 feet high with an overhang, and a skirt buried around the perimeter to prevent tunnelling.
11. Some pet wolves are euthanised or might be released into the wild where they are likely to starve or be killed by resident wolf packs in regions where they are still present.
12. Abandoned or escaped captive wolves can be a menace to the neighborhood and livestock.
13. Captive wolves are not working dogs, and cannot be trained as such.
The Red Wolf
The Red wolf is critically endangered. With its habitat primarily in the Southeastern United States, the Red Wolf exists mostly in protected areas where conservation of this species is underway. There were at one time three subspecies of the Red Wolf, but only one exists today. All wolves were built for speed and have been known to reach speeds approaching 40 mph.

The Indian Wolf
It has been suggested that the Indian Wolf has not cross-bred with any other wolf subspecies for almost 400,000 years, therefore it represents its own separate species besides the Grey Wolf. The Indian Wolf is found only in the eastern Indian subcontinent. In the Rudyard Kipling story, The Jungle Book, The main character Mowgli was raised by Indian Wolves. The Arabian and Iranian wolf subspecies are unusual as they are not known to howl.

The Eastern Wolf
The Eastern Wolf was considered a sub-species of the Grey wolf, but studies have recently come to light making the Eastern Wolf a species in it's own right. The Eastern Wolf is also believed to be an ancient species from the eastern parts of North America, and may be more of a relative to the Red Wolf than the Grey Wolf. The current habitat of the Eastern Wolf is Canada and Alaska.Like the Red Wolf, the Eastern Wolf is small in stature, has a grey and brown coat with long black hairs along the back and sides with some red hair behind the ears (possibly because of Red Wolf ancestry).
The Ethiopian Wolf
The Ethiopian wolf has been known by many names because of the confusion in what catagory this wolf really belongs in. Currently endangered, the Ethiopian wolf is about the size of a coyote with a long narrow muzzle. The coat is various shades of red with white contrasting marks. The Ethiopian wolf lives in a pack but they hunt alone.
