Wolves in Scotland?

There is a plan afoot to reintroduce wild wolves to the Scottish Highlands.  The thinking behind this is that wolves would help to restrict the huge numbers of red deer that are destroying vegetation and ancient forests and putting bird populations under treat by destroying their habitat.

Wolves were indigenous to Scotland until 1769 and apparently recorded incidents of attacks on humans are negligible.  Many people probably don't realise that wolves have already naturally expanded into France, Germany and Scandinavia.  For large carnivores to have a long term future they have to be allowed to spread naturally and not restricted to designated conservation zones and National parks.

Bringing wolves back to Scotland would control the spread of red deer and significantly increase the diversity of plant and bird life.

The effect of the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone

In the dead of winter in 1995 the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service brought 14 wolves into Yellowstone by truck and sleigh. Gray wolves (Canis lupus) from Canada, these were the first to call Yellowstone home since the creatures were hunted out of existence there early in the 20th century. A year later 17 more Canadian wolves were added.
