$20 Trillion: Money in Women's Management
2 7% of the money worldwide is in the hands of women. Why just a quarter? Well let's celebrate what is and pursue equity another time! That is $20 trillion! That is a lot of money. Women are becoming actively involved in managing their own money and are getting better at this. They tend to gather information before making investment decisions.
Despite this, what I do know from my own experience is that women are still considered to be second or third class investors by many bankers. There seems to be a very conscious position that somehow banks and other investment brokers have to look for the man of the house to ensure a reasonable discussion of money affairs. Sorry, but for many households, that "man" of the house is a woman. Recent studies have now confirmed that women are more effective money managers. What's new? Haven't women managed household finances for centuries. Haven't they fed their families well even in meager times?
So many of the small investor horror stories are told by men who trusted a friend to do the investment homework and then got the shaft. In families, women are increasingly emerging as the effective financial planner as data replaces blind trust.
Women Better investors than Men
The National Association of Investment Clubs study shows that women's investment clubs outperformed their male counterparts by a wide margin in 9 out of 12 years.
Missing the Money Management Trend?
Women are becoming savvy decision makers on money

A nd it's not just bankers who are missing this trend. Go and buy a car and watch the colour and upholstery tap dance instead of the focus on the car's capacity. Someone is still watching 1960's movies of Mom as the resident technical and investment donut while dad is the savvy decision maker. Generally for women, a car is like a dishwasher and functionality is key, not machismo. Once again, there is a lag time in an industry catching up to social reality.

Women, the $20 Trillion Decision Makers
Many Women Still Define Themselves as Inept in Money Management
M any times, we, women bring this on ourselves. We feel that men just naturally get the better deals and more serious attention when it comes to money management. It took me long to shake this off. I used to psyche myself up before I went to meet people about any major purchase or investment.
In talking to others, it seems that many women still define themselves as inept in these key areas even though they are highly effective in managing their households which includes the bigger portion of family money management. Most investment and large purchase institutions all over the world still have a long way to go to serve the interests of this $20 trillion decision makers.

Women are savvy money investors
Women, time to expand your money awareness

T oday, more and more women are becoming savvy investors. Our education institutions still do a terrible job of developing financial awareness but there are other ways of learning. Women are doing this on their own. Toronto Dominion Bank (Canada) recently reported that a third of their online brokerage clients and this seems to be true across the industry are women. If there are opportunities, trust the women to be there.
More women are also becoming financial literacy advocates for women. Beyond the histrionics of the Suze Ormans, there is a growing number of women who are proving every day, as small investors and competent "large purchase" managers, that they can be very useful coaches to others. More women are opening businesses everyday than men.

Women, shop with investment in mind
Shopping are great investment opportunities

G o shopping to your heart's content. But don't just buy. Observe what people are buying. What choices are they making and how do they make these choices? Listen. Eavesdrop. Watch. Pay attention.
Of course, there are now so many publicly available data about almost everything. Data not only on investment opportunities but on choices in almost every large product category and investment alternative. Not the Bloomberg/CNBC bafflegab of fanciful speculation but the harder data of news stories.
Examples: How many new aircraft are required in the next 20 years? Who will build them? How will we transport goods as the economy grows? Can we afford trucks and more roads and pollution? Do trains make better sense? Who owns the trains? Women are in the best position they have ever been to take charge of longer term decisions How did I go about this?
Take note of investment ideas when you go shopping

Women, Enhance your money literacy
You are your kids key money advisers
T his is not difficult. You are already doing this. When you budget your household money or bring your kids to shop, you are their key financial advisers so you have done this a million times.
You are savvy in finding deals and bargains, aren't you? You know exactly where to go for the best value for your money. You have researched these well and the shopping grapevine has fully communicated all these. You have your best source of information. Word of mouth is still the top market strategy. And aren't women good at this?
Why women should take money management seriously?
Start learning money management now
- 1Women live longer than men as shown in several studies so they need more resources than men to maintain a decent lifestyle and pay for care which often is more costly at old age. Most women, one in 4, go bankrupt two years after their husbands die. Around 75% of women get widowed at an average age of 56.
- 2Women, on average, earn less than men so they need to manage their resources better and learn how to make their money earn more.
- 3Women often take time off to raise children so they have less money for retirement than men. As such, they need to learn how to make this money grow.
- 4Majority of women because they have not learned how to invest often put their money in low earning securities so these do not earn enough to make them sustain their lifestyle at retirement. 75% of the elderly who live at poverty level are women.
- 5Because women earn less and work less number of years, their benefits such as pension and others are less that that of men. The more, therefore, is there a need for women to learn how to manage this money better. Around 53% of women compared to 22% of men are not covered by pensions.
