Turn Your Idea Into a Product!

No, I'm not talking about turning your idea of having a baby into an actual baby.  I'm pretty sure we all know how that works... In my case, I created a line of infant apparel...

Do you have a great idea but have no idea where to start?  You don't even have to be a woman for the info here to apply... Business is business.  However, it is tailored to women because, well, I am one so hey, it's what I know.  Although, I am a bit of a tom boy if that helps you macho guys who are reading this in secret hoping your buddies don't find out you're getting manufacturing tips from a chick!

So You Have a Great Idea... Make it Into a... THING!

Stuff I found out along the way to starting my manufacturing co.

The more you talk about an idea, the less likely you are to do anything about it.

Stop talking and do it.

Easier said than done? Maybe but no one said it was going to be easy. Five years WILL pass because time is constant. At the end of that five years you can either still be sitting on your can talking about your great idea or you can be hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, stressed out and have that product for sale to the public!! WOW!

Way to sell it Jen.

Well, ok, I never said I was in SALES.

Seriously though. If you take small bites and keep your goals attainable, with time, money, perserverance and LOTS of coffee you can accomplish what you set out to do.

There are a few very basic things you should do while researching your idea:

- Pour yourself a nice cup of coffee.
- Set up an LLC or Corp to protect your personal liability
- Secure the domain name of your product (www.blah.com)
- Trademark your product name
- Apply for a patent if necessary
- Do a Business Plan!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Take a nap
- Decide how far you want to go in marketing and selling your product... Internet only? Global? Local? Wholesale? Distributors? This will dictate how you approach manufacturing etc.
- Figure out how much you think it will cost for the first 3 years of operations and development... Then triple it. Now you are functioning from a real place.
- Go after financing - Angels? Bank Loans? Rich Uncle? Start kissing his hiney now because you will need him!
- Line up a manufacturer - Be CAREFUL of third party "middle men" if using overseas production. They are usually corrupt. Try to work directly with the factory.
- Take Chinese/Mandarin 101
- Take another nap
- Don't forget to take care of yourself. All work and no play makes you a crazy person. Just ask my husband.

Books I Used to Get Started

Such great books! I still refer to them!

If you do not know where to start, buy a book. Someone, somewhere has written down what you want to know.

Stylease One-Piece Infant Wear Commercials

Sometimes a product needs a little introduction. Because Stylease are one-piece rompers designed to look like separates, it's necessary to point that out since people just think they are separates. They are all patented one-piece outfits! Hard to believe but true!!
