Artist Andrea Harris

Faces intrigue me.  If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then what is the face?  Perhaps faces are the windows to the world -- a connection to humanity.

-- Andrea Harris (self-portrait)

When you first view the portaits in Chicago artist Andrea Harris's Women of Courage: Beyond Boundaries series, most of her subjects seem demur, almost vulnerable.  You wonder who's there to protect them.

Blink and your perspective may change.  You'll see in these faces strength beyond boundaries, indeed.  Environmental heroines, adoptive mothers, sex trade victims, civil rights icons, drug abusers, Christian ministers.  With bold strokes of her painter's brush, Andrea Harris opens a window to their world, helping us explore, learn, and grow.

About: FACE

1. the front part of the head, from the forehead to the chin.

Diane and Veja first met at an orphanage in Dzerzhinsk, Russia, where they began the journey of parent and child. Both have felt connected, as if they belong together. Both are strong willed; Veja is like an indefinable, strangely wonderful part of Diane; musical, creative, independent and fearless.

2. a look or expression on this part: a sad face.

Bangladesh Woman... Over the last decade, 200,000 Bangladeshi girls were lured under false circumstances and sold into the sex industry in nations including Pakistan, India and the Middle East.

3. an expression or look that indicates ridicule, disgust, etc.; grimace: The child put on a face when told to go to bed.

Mary Magdelene... She evokes strength, crossing religious boundaries and beyond. She remains a spirited soul and an everlasting inspiration, and in the midst of swirling controversy, a mere whisper of her name transcends us to a special place in time.

4. cosmetics; makeup: Excuse me while I go to the powder room to put on my face.

Gertrude Margaret Lowthian Bell was born in England in 1868 and was renowned as the "Uncrowned Queen of Iraq." Her knowledge of the region led her to become involved with the British Intelligence during World War I; in 1915 she gathered information to mobilize Arabs against Turkey.

5. impudence; boldness: to have the face to ask such a rude question.

Rosa Parks, "mother of the civil rights movement" is truly a "Woman of Courage." Her act of courage in 1955, of refusing to give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger, fueled a citywide boycott by blacks of the bus system, lasting more than a year.

Limited Edition Art Books by Andrea Harris

"Behind each of my paintings there is a story, and upon completion of a series a book is created. Each limited edition book is a small treasure that allows the viewer to enjoy the entire body of work, and also serves as a connection among collectors who have purchased a painting from a particular series."
