MENOPAUSE

Shingles
Shingles is an illness that is near and dear to me. I am currently suffering an outbreak and realize that this is a serious issue that women need to be informed about.
I will not be 50 for about 9 more months. I thought this was an illness that affected the elderly. I was informed that anyone can get shingles if they have a compromised immune system.
Over the past eighteen months, I have been overwhelmed with both personal and professional issues. As a result, my immune system has revolted. I knew that I was in trouble from the anxiety, lack of sleep, bodily aches and heavy work schedule. I didn't however realize how serious the consequences would be.
What is shingles? Shingles is a rash caused by Varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chicken pox. After the chicken pox, the virus remains dormant in your nervous system and never completely goes away.
Under certain circumstance such as immune deficiencies and stress the virus reactivates in the form of Shingles. It generally occurs over the age of 60 but can affect anyone. It is estimated that over 500,000 people are affected each year. It should be noted that the Herpes virus that causes Shingles is not the same one that causes genital herpes.
With shingles, there can be severe pain, burning and itching. Blisters will form along the nerve path affected. There can be several days to a week of pain and discomfort before the blisters appear. The blisters will last 3-4 weeks. They will eventually break and crust over before disappearing.
Shingles is contagious to only those who have not had chicken pox. Shingles itself is not contagious. if someone who has not had chicken pox comes in contact with a person with shingles, they can get chicken pox.
There is treatment for those who recognize their symptoms. If you have started an outbreak and receive treatment promptly, you can shorten the outbreak and symptoms. Drugs that fight viruses (antivirals), such as acyclovir (Zovirax), valacyclovir (Valtrex), or famciclovir (Famvir), can reduce the severity and duration of the rash if started early (within 72 hours of the appearance of the rash).
Balancing Your Life
How to do it all after 50!
Prioritizing all areas necessary to have a balanced life is possible if there is an organized way to pull it all together. The key though is "prioritizing"!
Make a list of all the things that are essential to your life such as your children, family, work, friends, beauty care etc. Then, decide which come first and the ones that you can either live without or spend the least time on.
For example, family would probably rank at the top. Then would probably be work if you are still a career person. You might be spending too much time chatting on the phone and are not taking the time to exercise or do housework.
I found out that I didn't have the time to chat as much as people liked, but try to touch base with close friends and family for short talks to stay in touch. Most times, with extended phone conversations, we end up repeating ourselves or start looking for topics to chat about.
Exercise should be on your list of things to do. As we get older, it is important for our heart, bones, and maintaining our figure. It becomes more difficult for most women to stay slim so, burning calories becomes more of an issue.
Since probably 50% of women over 50 are either divorced or have been in the past, there is a chance they are looking for companionship. With children in the mix, it is more difficult to date but not impossible. Dating can be better you get older since hopefully our life experiences will keep us from making the same mistakes.
Taking time to spend time with your friends is an essential part of balancing your life. You need to take time to laugh, play, and take pleasure in the second half of your life.
Challenging as it can be to do it all, if you really want to achieve a full and balanced life, the possibilities are endless!

After 50 years of working and raising a family, a woman is entitled to lots of pampering. Pedicures, manicures, facials a massages are a nice way to feel good and validate that you deserve it!
