Best Work Clothes For Women
The handy woman needs comfort. She needs pockets, and she also needs an outfit that says, "I'm working, it's OK to get these clothes dirty, stained, and painted on."
Whether it's painting a room, or hammering nails into a fence post, I personally choose overalls for my handywoman work.
The main reason I do this is a big thank-you to the plumbers of the world. My modest self does not want to be the "butt" of plumber jokes. With overalls, I never have to worry about that!
Plus, once the overalls are worn in, they're nothing but soft comfort.
Following are my recommendations for handywomen wear — and some DIY tips and tricks as well...

Carhartt Washed Denim Bib Overall
Workhorse coveralls for lighter weather

How To Hold A Hammer
It really matters

If you grip your hammer too close to the striker, you'll make at least twice the strokes to sink your nail as you would if you gripped the hammer toward the end of its handle — away from the striker.
Try it; you'll never choke up again.

Work Shirts For Overalls And Hot! Weather
Carhartt Women's Work-Dry Tank
Carhartt Women's Work-Dry Tank Top,White,X-Small
Wear it as an extra layer in colder weather and alone when it's hot. You get great coverage with this long length that helps the shirt stay down in your overalls. Has "stretch and recovery," and anti-odor properties.
Prices vary by size.
Work Shirts For Overalls And Mild Weather
Carhartt Women's Work-Dry Short Sleeve T-Shirt
Carhartt WK212 Color Enhanced Short Sleeve Work-Dry T-Shirt Bright Lime Large
A workhorse of a shirt. Moisture is pulled away from your body in hot or cold weather. Plus, there are anti-odor properties built in!
Prices vary by size.

How To Get A Smooth Caulk Job

Through trial and error, I learned not to skimp when running a bead of caulk — but not to gush it in there either. Once the bead is run, the absolute best way I have found to smooth it out is to wet my finger in some soapy water. I add dish detergent (Dawn) to a bowl full of water, making it really soapy.
With my soapy finger, I run it along the bead with as smooth a motion as I can make. During the smoothing process, I have an old rag or newspaper to wipe caulk off of my finger before I re-soap it. It will build up on the finger and mess up the work if the finger isn't kept wiped off. So, I re-soap my finger often, wipe my finger off often, and keep on smoothing until the job is done. :)

- I wore overalls on some clinic days to the prosthetic lab - since you really can carry tools in them: hammer, tools, calipers, etc. With a white tank top underneath, they are kind of sexy too.

- Really enjoyed this article. I'm going to need some new work clothes after my most recent projects this week (installing a pine ceiling and new windows). You are right about needing clothes that can take a beating and become "tie-dyed" with stain and paint. I'd love some tough overalls. That was the cool look in the 70s (overalls and painter's pants). Great tips here and nice work clothing options. Thanks!

- Try the Garden Gear overalls (with a pocket inside for knee-pads) or work pants. They are great and wear forever! I've had mine for 12 years and they keep on wearing like iron, but comfy!
