Women Self Defense Techniques
Have you ever had that scared, helpless feeling that you have no control over the events in your life? This is the feeling that victims have following the life altering event of being attacked. They become scared about going anywhere and become paranoid that something else could happen to them. Even their home no longer feels safe.
One of the number one reasons that many women are victims of an attack is because they do not know how to react properly to the threat. You need to do your research because women self defense techniques that are taught might not be effective and could very well put you in danger if not used properly. There are many different styles of martial arts out there and while it can be advantageous to learn one, sometimes it's not the best place to start.
Learning proper self defense begins with knowledge. You need to know how to prevent an attack by being aware of your surroundings, and not putting yourself into a situation that can be potentially dangerous. It is also very important to learn more about the type of person you are, what type of demeanor you have, and how you react to frightening situations. You need to be aware of this so you can be prepared to formulate a strategy of how to best handle the situation if it arises. If you run, can you get away or find help? Maybe you don't have time? The most important thing about women's self defense classes is the information that is taught. It can be more harm than good if you are not taught properly about self defense.
- It will take many years of consistent practice and dedication to a martial art to properly be able to protect yourself in an actual life and death situation.
- Don't get an inflated ego just because you took a couple of Tae Bo classes at the gym. This can do much more harm than good by providing you with a false sense of security. It is important to walk with confidence but never be over confident.
- A good self defense class will teach you how to prevent from getting yourself into bad situations like never walk alone in the dark. Have someone escort you to your car when you get off work. Park you car in well lit areas. Be smart and always be prepared for the worst.
- Knowing the proper information is a key element in self defense. Statistical information is vital to your safety. Many women aren't aware of how common date rape is and never expect it to happen to them.
- A good self defense class will focus on techniques such as finger jabs to the eyes, palm heel strikes to the face, biting, and groin grabs. These will be practiced on an attacker in a padded uniform.
- Strategies and proper use of practical non lethal self defense weapons such as pepper spray and tasers is important. Without the proper training these items will be a lot less effective or even useless.
- Mental training should be largely focused on also. It is important to know how to carry yourself, and to know what to say and how to say it in the event of a confrontation. Many times a situation can be prevented and even avoided just by your posture. Predators attack the weak.
- You should be informed about lethal weapons as protection in the event that you should want to carry a gun or knife. This can be very dangerous to you if you aren't properly trained by a certified professional.
- It is necessary to learn how to analyze your surroundings any where you are. By constantly knowing where you are and what is going on around you, you can better estimate potentially dangerous situations before you walk right into one.
- Learn how to create a safety perimeter for your home. We all feel the safest in our homes, so it is important to know what steps to take in order to keep your home from being a target of a crime.

Tae Bo and Tae Kwon Do
How Practical Are They For Self Defense?
Well, I always say that it is better to know something than nothing at all. However in the case of Tae Bo, there were many individuals that would mistake good exercise for self defense.Tae Bo is great for your health and it is definitely important to be in good shape, but it is important to remember that Tae Bo is just an aerobics program. If you are involved in another style I highly recommend that you do it in addition to your training for cardiovascular training.
Too many people have found out the hard way that Tae Bo gives you a false sense of security when you have no fighting background.
How about Tae Kwon Do? It is one of the most popular martial arts in the world. When I was younger I used to call it Tae Kwon Don't for the simple fact that it is very sport oriented and the goal is more towards scoring points than protecting yourself.
The majority of the points are scored with kicks and punches are difficult to get points with so the fighters usually bounce around each other throwing kicks and if they get close they usually don't punch too much. Your hands should be your main focus when it comes to self defense. Learning to kick is a lot of fun but people with little fighting experience believe that they will be able to knock someone down with an immediate kick.
It doesn't work that way. I have seen many come out fighting by throwing a kick and they are usually knocked out with a punch or taken to the ground and beaten.
Tae Kwon Do is great for kids to begin with and it is great exercise but unless you have been practicing it actively for most of your life, then it is not the top on my list for learning how to defend yourself.

Karate
The Numerous Styles Of Karate
How does Karate rank in terms of self defense? There are numerous types of Karate so it really depends on what style and of course how good of an instructor you have. Karate is a good place for kids to begin and since it focuses equally on hand techniques and kicks it is usually more rounded from a self defense perspective. However the techniques and stances are a little out-dated.
In todays world fighting is much different than it was when these arts were invented, and since most classes are traditional chances are you will be learning something that might not help you if you are a beginner. Don't get me wrong. If you study a martial art with a high level of dedication and intensity for a long period of time (years), you will become efficient in defending yourself from attackers.
One important thing that you need to remember is that a lot of self defense is about your mentality in the situation. I have friends that grew up fighting, and when they learned how to punch from taking a semester of Karate at the university they really became dangerous in fights. Remember these are people with the mentality of don't back down and take no crap from anyone. You teach them something and the first thing they do is try it out on the next person that looks at them wrong.
Kick Boxing
An Art Of Kicking And Punching
If you are looking for something that can be learned relatively quick, will get you in great shape and is simple and effective then kick boxing would probably be a good fit.Kick boxing can be a brutal sport. It teaches a few basic punching and kicking techniques that are simple to learn and practices usually consist of a good amount of sparring in one form or another. This is a good art for those that want to get into better shape and toughen themselves up quick.
It is not the best art for self defense however. Yes you might be able to land a good punch or kick against an attacker and you will definitely have a higher level of confidence, but the chance of you defeating your attacker quickly is very low. Most people, especially larger individuals will be able to take a punch or two and once they grab a hold of you the game has changed.
Kick boxing doesn't teach grappling at all. If you have watched a kick boxing match you might have noticed that the referee spends a lot of time breaking up the fighters when they grab each other. Remember over 90% of fights end up on the ground.
If you combine kick boxing with a grappling art like jiu jitsu then you will be getting more rounded training. This is the combination that most mixed martial artists study.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Great For Ground Fighting
If your attacker gets a hold of you, chances are they are going to try to take you to the ground. If this happens then you need to know how to fight effectively on the ground. The best martial art for learning self defense on the ground would be Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.Statistics show that over 90% of fights go to the ground. This is a very high percentage that needs to be taken into account when considering your safety. While Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not the only art that teaches effective ground fighting techniques it is definitely known for being very effective. Once again, the effectiveness depends on how good of a teacher you have and how much time and energy you commit to learning.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu originates from Judo. It was introduced in Brazil by a Judo practitioner named Mitsuo Maeda that taught with self defense in mind instead of the sport of Judo.
The advantage of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that it gets you comfortable being on the ground and you are less likely to panic if you get taken down. Also it is very possible for a smaller person to subdue a larger attacker with ease. Another advantage is that the practices are a bit rough so it teaches you to get used to taking a bit of a beating. You will actually be fighting using the ground techniques taught with 100% effort (Since your focus is not punching you don't have to pull punches like in other arts; instead you will learn how to subdue opponents using chokes, and joint locks).
The disadvantages of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are that you definitely do not want to be fighting an attacker on the ground. It is better if you have the option of running away. Since the focus of what you learn is on the ground, this art isn't the best as far as learning how to avoid being taken down to the ground. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become very popular over the years so chances are higher that your attacker might be aware of how to ground fight also. It will take a lot of time and energy for a woman or smaller sized individual to dominate a larger attacker, but it is very possible to accomplish.

Judo
An Art Of Throwing And Grappling
Judo was created in Japan by a man named Jigoro Kano. The name Judo means "the gentle way". However, don't be fooled by the name. Judo practices are often times anything but gentle. Learning how to do the techniques without effort is the ultimate goal of Judo practitioners.Judo was created due to the dangerous nature of many traditional jiu jitsu techniques that often seriously and permanently injured practitioners of the art. One of Kano's goals was to create an art that would be more effective and safe for the practitioners to avoid serious injury while practicing.
Judo eventually evolved into a sport which is now a part of the Olympics. It is the second most popular sport in the world. Judo focuses heavily on the art of throwing an opponent to the ground by positioning yourself to use the opponents energy against him. Once the opponent is down then ground techniques which are similar to jiu jitsu are utilized.
The biggest advantage of practicing judo is that you learn how not to be taken to the ground and how to put your opponent there instead. A throw is different than that of a wrestling take down because the main goal of a throw is not to go to the ground with your opponent if you don't have to. If you are attacked and you can keep your balance and put your attacker on the ground, you can run away from the situation. If you do happen to go to the ground with the attacker, chances are better that you will be in a position of control once you are there and you can more effectively use the ground techniques that are taught.
The biggest disadvantage of judo is that it will take time to learn and a high level of dedication. Judo is not an art that you can show up to for a few months and learn how to properly defend yourself. There are really no martial arts out there that you can learn quickly. They all take time and dedication. Some are more effective than others and I believe that judo will make you a much tougher person mentally and physically and will help keep you from being taken down easily by an attacker.
If you feel like you are kind of a wimp and want to learn to toughen up then I would definitely suggest judo or jiu jitsu, because the techniques you learn can be practiced at 100% effort (Unlike in Karate where you punch in the air, or pull punches).

Women Self Defense And Mace Spray
Using Mace Spray For Self Defense
All you have to do is turn on the news or open up a newspaper and see what is going on in the world. Crime is all around us, constantly, and the dreary headlines that pop up more and more frequently are a harsh reminder of that. When I was young, self-defense wasn't a big issue. It was safe enough for parents to let their children play freely in the neighborhood. Adults could leave doors unlocked at night. Jogging after the sun set wasn't even a concern. Nowadays, people need to be incredibly aware of their surroundings. Self-defense is being taught to younger children on a regular basis. Classes are offered in schools around the country, colleges as well, encouraging people to be safe and learn to defend themselves.
Mace spray, also referred to as pepper spray, is one of the most common methods of portable self-defense. Women are especially drawn to carrying it on them as a means of protection. Most mace spray that can be found and purchased, is in a small and light container that is easy to slide into a purse or slip into a pocket. Of course, keep in mind that just like all weapons can be, mace spray can be used against the intended user as well. An unprepared victim can have it wrestled out of their hand and find themselves being sprayed.
While having mace spray is legal in all of the fifty states, some townships and cities do have certain regulations when it comes to owning, purchasing and possessing it. Anyone under the age of 18 isn't even permitted to purchase mace spray. Many younger individuals do have it in their possession, having most likely been purchased for them by parents. It isn't a bad idea for teenagers to have mace spray on them. Of course, if you are a parent buying such a product for your teen, make sure that they are aware of the dangers and risks of having it. Make sure that they realize that mace is not something that should be played with or abused. Spraying mace at others when not threatened is something that can cause legal headaches and many issues.
The world is an uneasy place at times. There is a constant need for people of all ages to be aware of their surroundings. There is no definite age that crime specifically targets. Anyone who wants a means of protection and of feeling safe might want to consider having mace spray as a means of defense. If you have questions about having that in your possession, never hesitate to ask your local police department.
