Menopause
The Change of LifeAs you age, your body slowly makes less and less of the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which leads to menopause. Estrogen loss can also weaken bones, leading to osteoporosis, so it's important to consume at least 1500 mg of calcium per day to help keep bones strong.
Menopause is a normal change in a woman's life when her menstrual cycle stops, usually between the ages of 45 and 55. A woman has reached natural menopause when she has not had a period for 12 consecutive months. (It may occur at any age as a result of medical therapies such as a hysterectomy and chemotherapy.)
Menopause affects every woman differently. Some experience no symptoms while others may suffer any combination of the following:
Hot Flashes
Night sweats
Insomnia
Vaginal dryness
Hair loss
Mood swings
When it comes to treatment, one size does not fit all. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is an option
for treating hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Other treatment options may include taking soy products,
herbal medicines, and antidepressants-although these therapies are not FDA-approved for treating menopausal
symptoms.
All treatments have benefits and risks involved. If your symptoms cause you discomfort or concern, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about treatment options right for you.
Pregnancy and Prenatal Care
Pregnancy and Prenatal Care
Pregnancy and Prenatal CareBefore you get pregnant, you should start living more healthfully:
Eat healthy foods
Exercise regularly
Stop smoking and drinking alcohol
Get 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid daily
Prenatal care helps keep mother and baby healthy during pregnancy, and consists of multiple doctor appointments, medical tests, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Babies of mothers who do not get prenatal care are three times more likely to have a low birth weight and five times more likely to die than those born to mothers who do get care. Most experts suggest pregnant women see their doctor once a month for the first six months of pregnancy, then every two weeks for the seventh and eighth months, and then every week until the baby is born.
Many women wait until they are in their 30s and 40s to have children. While many women have no problems
getting pregnant, fertility does decline with age. Women over 40 who don't get pregnant after six months of trying should see their doctors for a fertility evaluation.
Breast and Cervical Cancer
Breast and Cervical Cancer
Breast & Cervical CancerBreast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, other than skin cancer. A mammogram (X-ray of the breast) along with a breast exam by your doctor is the most effective way to detect it early. Performing a breast self-exam monthly to check for lumps or other changes is also an important part of preventative care.
Cervical cancer-cancer of the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina-can be very serious; but there are ways to help prevent it. By getting regular Pap tests and pelvic exams, your doctor can find and treat
the changing cells before they turn into cancer.
Some cervical cancer may be caused by a type of virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). Gardasil, the only vaccine approved to provide protection from several forms of HPV known to cause cervical cancer, is an option for young women between the ages of 9 and 26. If you are a woman experiencing any changes in your body or have questions about your health, talk with your doctor.
