The Marvellous Magic Of The Wonderbra

The Gossard Wonderbra

I first discovered the Gossard Wonderbra when I was around 16 or 17. What a find! This miracle of illusion has to be one of the greatest inventions ever!

I decided to put this lens together as a 'Thank you!' for the Wonderbra on behalf of millions of women across the globe.

Why A Wonderbra?

Why Not?

Wonderbra...what a wonderful design of engineering! I first saw one in the changing rooms at school. I noticed that some of the other girls had much fancier underwear than I did and it had a wonderful effect too!!

So I saved my pocket money and eventually invested in one of these marvellous bras.

There are so many variations on the Wonderbra. You can choose between, strapless, multiway, front fastening, gel, padded, foam, satin, embroidered...so many choices!

I have a vivid memory of walking along the street, thinking I was the next Twiggy, when all of a sudden I noticed an additional feature to my curves. The little piece of additional padding from my Wonderbra had made a bid for freedom and was poking out the top of my shirt. How embarrassing. From that time on, I always stitched them into that little pocket in the bra so that I never had an escapee again!!

Of course, Wonderbra also has matching panties, thongs, suspenders/Garter belts, stockings and probably lots more items that I don't know about :) They also come in just about every colour you can imagine! I love having matching underwear and I'm sure most other woman do too.

Brief Wonderbra History

From Wikipedia

The Wonderbra is a type of push-up brassiere that gained worldwide prominence in the 1990s. Although the Wonderbra name was first trademarked in the U.S. in 1935, the brand was developed in Canada.

Moses (Moe) Nadler, founder and majority owner of the Canadian Lady Corset Company, licensed the trademark for the Canadian market in 1939. By the 1960s the Canadian Lady brand had become known in Canada as "Wonderbra, the company."

In 1961 the company introduced the Model 1300 plunge push-up bra. This bra became one of the best-selling Canadian styles and is virtually identical to today's Wonderbra.

In 1968, Canadian Lady changed its name to Canadian Lady-Canadelle Inc., was sold to Consolidated Foods (now Sara Lee Corporation), and later became Canadelle Inc. During the 1970s Wonderbra was repositioned as the company's fashionable and sexy brand, and became the Canadian market leader.

In 1991, the push-up Wonderbra became a sensation in the UK, although it had been sold there since 1964 under license by the Gossard division of Courtaulds Textiles. Sara Lee Corporation did not renew Gossard's license and redesigned the push-up style for the reintroduction of the Wonderbra to the U.S. market in 1994.

Since 1994, the Wonderbra has expanded from the single push-up design into a full-range lingerie fashion label in most of the world. In most countries, the brand emphasizes sex-appeal. In its native Canada, the brand however promotes the functional qualities of its products-a departure from the strategy that made Wonderbra the top-seller in the 1970s.

Original Wonderbra Design

Original "Wonder-Bra" design

Before the Second World War broke out, elastic materials were rationed and unavailable for clothing. Israel Pilot designed an improved cup with a diagonal slash, shoulder strap attachment. This innovation on existing bra design provided more comfort and freedom of movement for the wearer. He also coined the name "Wonder-Bra" in 1935.

Israel Pilot's US patent 2245413, granted in 1941, allowed for greater shoulder strap elasticity by cutting the fabric so that the weave has the greatest stretch (cutting on the "bias"). The photographs show the original patent sketches and close-ups of a bra made in the U.S. by D'Amour. The model is wearing a rare 1950s version of this original Wonder-Bra design.

So What Size Am I?

Follow this guide to measure yourself accurately

Some good stores in the UK such as Marks & Spencers, John Lewis, Bravissimo, provide a free measuring service and will advise you which style of bra would be best for you. Maybe someone could tell me which stores in the US offer the same service so I can add them here.

Bra Measuring Instructions

Use this guide to ensure you order the correct size bra

1) Take a tight measurement under the bust in inches. Ensure the tape measure is flat, and straight around the body. (See diagram (A). Write down this number for use later in the calculation.

2) If this measurement is an odd number (e.g. 29 inches), add 5 (equalling 34). If it is an even number (e.g. 30 inches), add 4 (equalling 34) this measurement is your back size.

3) To determine your cup size, take a bust measurement by taking the tape around the fullest part of the bust, ensuring it is not tight in anyway, if anything it is better to be slightly loose. (See diagram (B). Make sure the tape measure is in a straight line across the back. Write down this number underneath the number from step 1.

4) The difference between these two-recorded measurements will give you your cup size by looking at the table below.

Example:
Under bust measurement = 29
Over bust measurement = 38.
The difference between these two measurements is 9, therefore your cup size is DD.
Add 4 to the under bust measurements (29+4= 34)
your bra size should be 34DD
