Wonderful Christmas Traditions

Christmas Memories

Season of PeaceThe Christmas season is often associated with wonderful times with family and friends. While gift giving and shopping are so often the focus, it is the time spent with loved ones from near and far that often times created memories that are retold from year to year, even long after loved ones have passed.

Cutting a Fresh Christmas Tree

Gathering the family to go cut a fresh Christmas tree is not something that everyone is probably familiar with. It might actually sound very foreign to someone living in a big city along the lines of New York. It may also seem a little strange for those in the warmer regions of the United States, say Orlando or San Diego. Getting together to go cut a Christmas tree is something I grew up with though, and it is a tradition we try to pass on to our kids. We have not made it an every year occasion, but we have cut a fresh tree in four of the last six years.

It is pretty cool to watch the children get excited and try to explain why the tree that each of them has chosen is the right tree. They always start out picking different trees, but by the time we talk it out as a family we all agree on just the perfect tree.

Decorating the Tree

After I have the freshly cut Christmas tree home, unwrapped, set up in the tree stand, and put the base lights on the tree, it is time for decorations. Christmas music is turned up, hot chocolate with marshmallows is poured, and a nice glass of red wine is poured for the adults to prep for the decoration process. So far, I have managed to sit back and watch the decoration process with my glass of vino each year. To me, the real fun is watching the children put on decorations. They inevitably put the decorations in two groups (one for each), and we have some serious gaps to fill in. But I must say that noticing how each year the decorations are placed higher and higher is a treat in and of itself.

After the decorations are all on, and the empty spots have been filled, the lights go off in the house. It is time for the ceremonial lighting of the tree. The family stands and watches as the master of the lights (me) flips the magic switch (the powerstrip on/off button) on. All Christmas trees look wonderful the first time the lights are on. Lights, tons of decorations with sentimental meaning, and just plain old natural imperfections are the key. It is very enjoyable to put the kids to bed on tree lighting night because they are so excited, and I guess to a large extent, so are we.

Stockings Hung by the Chimney With Care

I think most people can get on board with the Christmas stocking tradition. I can't recall a single Christmas as either a child or adult where we didn't have stockings for everyone. They have ranged from simple red felt stockings to elaborate store bought stockings extreme! I've recently found that you can find classic Christmas stockings on the internet and directly on eBay.

Frosty The Snowman

Frosty Living in Virginia, I don't get a chance to celebrate Christmas with snowmen. Actually, I can't recall the last time I had a white Christmas. However, it is always nice to get in the Frosty spirit. So, Christmas or not, if it snows more than an inch or two we get out and make our snowmen right away!

You can get in the Christmas spirit by sitting down with your children and having family movie night. Frosty the Snowman is actually a very good family show to check out.

Christmas Craft Books on Amazon

There are many crafts that are suitable for the entire family. Some only take a few minutes of time, some only take some inspiration. These books are to help with the inspiration!

The Christmas Nutcracker Tradition

For as long as I can remember, my parents would get a new nutcracker each year. Of course before the Internet, that entailed ordering via catalog or finding a store locally that carried nutcrackers. Our nutcracker of choice now is the Steinbach nutcracker. They are a superior nutcracker for those of you who look for the best. Of course as online ecommerce has grown, we can carry on the tradition of buying new Steinbach Nutcrackers each year online. The especially nice thing about shopping online is that you can usually find a much wider selection of products than what you can usually find at a local store.

Christmas Recipes

Cooking With and For Family

One of my favorite traditions at Christmas is to cook for family. We usually invite over the family, and prepare a feast. Turkey and ham, mashed potatos, cranberry relish (homemade), green beans, brocoli casserole, fresh rolls, pumpkin pie, and usually, some new and intriguing Christmas recipe. Each year I search some of my favorite recipe sites for new Christmas Recipes to try.

My new recipes are not always successful, but they are usually worthy of stories for years to come if they fail (eg stuffing balls). Even the occasional cooking blunder (eg failing to remove the innards of the turkey) is often the topic of many Christmases to come. It is part of what makes each Christmas memorable for everyone in the family.

Awesome Christmas Sites

I spend a decent amount of time on the web looking for great Christmas ideas, tips, recipes, and just interesting trivia. Some of the sites I have found are:
Christmas Decorations
Amazing-Christmas-Ideas.com provides unique Christmas decoration ideas as well as unique decorating ideas.
Holiday Seasonal Products
Want to find a specific Christmas collectible? Their store is sure to please you then

Vintage Christmas Ornaments

As a child, we used glass Christmas ornaments almost exclusively. Of course most of what we find today are plastic, so the thought of buying any new glass ornaments is largely limited to specialty ornaments. I personally like the old fashion ornaments though. I have found that you can buy these quite regularly on eBay (one man's junk is another's treasure), and these are surely treasure for me.

Great Christmas Movies

A Christmas Story
A classic Christmas story for kids of all ages (except for a couple of words Ralphie lets loose in a tirade)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Spooky, spooky, spooky! Have a boo-tiful Christmas
Peanuts Holiday Collection
So this is not a traditional Christmas movie, but those of us who grew up in the 70's and 80's remember watching the Peanuts gang every year. These are wonderful family-friendly shows to watch that bring back the feel of childhood Christmas seasons.
It's a Wonderful Life
A personal favorite of mine, I can remember watching It's a Wonderful Life in black and white before I was even 10 years old. I've not had as much luck getting my kids to watch it, but I'll keep trying.
Home Alone
As far as Christmas traditions, this is not the first movie that comes to mind. However, if you really think about it, this movie is becoming a classic. A little bratty, but the underlying story is definitely Christmas worthy.
Miracle on 34th Street
Awesome movie (of course that is my opinion)! How can you dispute the joy of a young girl experiencing Santa Clause. Don't we all just really want something to believe in?
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
A word of warning... this movie will definitely require your attention if you let your children watch it. I felt a little uncomfortable with some of the language with a 10 year old in the room, but we took the time to explain that adult words are just that. For an adult though... ABSOLUTELY hilarious!
