What's a pomegranate?

A pomegranate is a delicious extremely juicy and sometimes kinda messy fruit. It is often known as an Asian Apple or a Seeded Apple. They can be pretty time consuming to open, but they are so worth the effort.
Most pomegranates are red but some can be white. They are about the size of a large orange.

My kids and I love the taste of the pomegranate. It is one of the sweetest juiciest fruits I have ever had. I started eating them in the late 90's. They looked interesting and I had no idea what it was. At the time they were very reasonably priced. I believe I could get a couple for a dollar. With the current increase in knowledge of their health benefits their price has soared. I remember being shocked when I went shopping and the price jumped from 2 for a dollar to 2 for 4. That seemed pretty dramatic to me. The only reason I can think of is the dramatic increase in demand for them. Needless to say I don't buy them quite as often as I used to. But the kids love them so I still get them once in a while. The price actually seemed to increase over night.

Health Benefits of the Pomegranate

The pomegranate is one of the healthiest fruits. Probably since it can be so hard to open. The pomegranate is loaded with antioxidants. Thats right, lots of antioxidants. The little guys that protect your body from free radicals. Studies have shown that antioxidants can help prevent the development of cancer and other diseases. The pomegranate can help prevent the buildup of the plaque that clogs arteries. It contains polyphenols which is what gives red wine its ability to lower bad cholesterol.
In a study of pomegranate juice's effects on Coronary Heart Disease the results are very impressive. Doctors took a small group of 45 people with CHD. Half were given Pom Wonderful every day and the other group got a placebo that looked just like it. In the group with the pomegranate juice their blood flow increased by 17%. Since CHD is one of the leading causes of death in the US this news sounds incredible. I wish doctors would try curing people with food instead of handing out drugs with horrible side effects as if it was candy. My grandmother was able to reduce her bad cholesterol with just simple almonds.

POM

I can't talk about pomegranates without mentioning POM. POM is the popular juice maker with the really cool looking bottle. POM grows their pomegranates in California and seem to be growing a lot in popularity with one of the healthiest juices on the market. POM is 100% pomegranate juice. It is pretty expensive compared to other juices but the price seems justified. It has no added sugar or other juices as filler like apple or pear juice. POM is just the high antioxidant loaded pomegranate juice. All of the studies being done by doctors to study the benefits of pomegranate juice are using POM Wonderful. POM is dedicated to keeping a high quality product. When they ran out of pomegranates in 2006 they simply shipped less bottles to stores instead getting pomegranates from overseas.
When reading about POM more for this I learned that their cool shaped bottle is actually the shape of 2 pomegranates stacked on top of each other. I guess that explains the original shape.

POM also sells various flavors of their juice. They have blueberry, cherry mango, tangerine and of course 100% pomegranate. I have tried both the blueberry and the 100% pomegranate and they are great. I also am a big fan of iced tea. POM makes a large variety of pomegranate tea too. Some of my favorite are POM Blackberry and POM Peach Passion.

Pomegranate seeds go great on top of a fresh salad. It can also be added to various desserts. The sweat flavor of the pomegranate is amazing combined with chocolate.

Spinach and Pomegranate Salad

Combine 1 bag of baby spinach with thinly sliced red onion, chopped walnuts and crumbled feta cheese. Then top with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Adding caramelized onions instead of the raw red onion is a little more work, but adds a lot of flavor.

Chocolate Covered Pomegranate Seeds

Everyone loves chocolate covered strawberries. Actually pretty much any fruit tastes even better dipped in chocolate. Since dipping the tiny seeds would be a little difficult. This is more like a chocolate bark type candy.

Use one bag of your favorite chocolate chips for each whole pomegranate.
I think dark chocolate goes really well.

Open and gather up all of the pomegranate seeds.

Next put them in a strainer to dry or I usually gently pat them dry.

Next melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in a bowl in the microwave until it is just melted.

Next add the seeds to the chocolate and gently fold them together.

Put spoonfuls of them on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. (I use a silpat for similar uses)

Refrigerate until the chocolate sets.
Then enjoy
