What Are Webkinz?

If you're a parent who hasn't been hounded for a Webkinz toy yet - get ready!

These combination physical/virtual toys are sweeping the country by storm and are sure to be a big hit at Christmas and on birthdays as well.

Webkinz are plush pet toys that have a secret code that can be entered into the Webkinz World online so that the child can turn their plush pet into a virtual one for double the fun!

Most Webkinz pets have a W on their paws. If you're lucky enough to have one without it, it means your Webkinz pet was one of the first ones ever created, so you have something special to hang onto.

Children all over the world love Webkinz because they get to combine both the physical and virtual version of their pet plush toy.  You can get them on the Internet or in some stores.

Once you own a Webkinz pet, you don't want to wash it.  They can be cleaned with a wet cloth that's damp, and you can even spot clean it with some gentle shampoo. The virtual pet is much easier to care for!

Webkinz World was created in 2005, and it's grown in population as more children and parents discover this unique way to have fun and learn at the same time. The virtual world is updated every two weeks with something new to keep the fun going.

Webkinz pets were first developed when the creators thought about how neat it would be to have a virtual world where a child's plush toy could "come to life!"  Instead of just imagining they were caring for their pet, they could actually complete tasks online for a pet with emotions like sadness or happiness.

They have also developed a Webkinz Trading Card Game to go with the entire pet empire!

Kids can trade cards and compete against one another, similarly to how Pokemon once took the world by storm.

Webkinz Are Educational AND Fun

Children always need to learn the importance of caring for others. A pet is a fantastic starting place, but maybe you don't relish the idea of picking up after a new puppy! With a Webkinz toy, you don't' have to - the pet care takes place in the wonderful Webkinz World, a virtual setting where kids can interact with their plush pet who's come to life on screen.

Kids love being online and interacting with stimulating games. At Webkinz World, they'll not only learn how to tell if their pet is happy or sad, but also if he's hungry or sick. He can then discover ways to treat the animal and make it feel better.

Webkinz World doesn't detract from a child's imagination, either. Parents are discovering how delighted their children are to have fun facts to absorb and trivia questions to solve.

Webkinz Promotes Interaction Between Parents and Children

One of the best things about Webkinz toys and Webkinz World is that it can be a solo adventure (if your child is old enough), or one that you take with her. Parents often join the community with their child to help them navigate the site and ensure they're participating to their fullest extent.

The site is primarily aimed at ages 3-13 and older, so if your child is in the young group where it may be hard to utilize all of the site's options, they may need your assistance.

Parents also control the amount of participation the kids can do on the site, such as joining the chat with other kids in a safe environment.

The arcade games promote learning, too - they're not mindless video games that so many kids get addicted to in modern society.

Skills that are promoted include addition, spelling, typing, and logical thinking.

Things You Can Do Within Webkinz World

The World of Webkinz is ripe with possibilities. Your child will adopt their pet into the virtual world first, naming it and choosing whether it's a boy or girl. Then they have numerous options on how to play in the World of Webkinz.

First they'll design a room for their pet, which mimics the world of the Sims games. Then they can play in the arcade, compete in tournaments, and answer Trivia questions in Quizzy's Question Corner.

There are contests in the World of Webkinz, too! Whenever your child participates in the online Webkinz community, they earn KinzCash. This virtual currency can be spent in the W Shop on things for their pet, like furniture for the room, toys, and pet clothes.

Every day there are stories to read and activities for your child to log into. A continual stream of education and entertainment!

Online Webkinz World Safety Tips

In the Webkinz World, parents get to keep a vigilant eye on their child's activities. They understand that online, it's vital to keep kids safe and protected.

When your child logs into Webkinz World, they can access the KinzChat PLUS feature in the chatroom.

But instead of chatting with any words, they're restricted to a certain dictionary of choices.

This way, your child can't tell another user their age, name, or location, since they're not available in the dictionary. And there are no inappropriate word choices, either.

You have to give your consent before your child can access the chat feature.

You can either grant access or block it. You never have to worry that a predator has targeted your child on the site, because Webkinz blocks all personal information.

Webkinz on Wikipedia

Webkinz are toy stuffed animals that were originally released by the Ganz company on April 29, 2005. The toys are similar to many other small plush toys, however, each Webkinz toy has an attached tag with a unique "Secret Code" printed on it that allows access to the "Webkinz World" website. On Webkinz World, the Secret Code allows the user to own a virtual version of the pet for virtual interaction.

There are also smaller, less expensive versions of the toys called Lil' Kinz as well as larger, slightly more expensive versions in the Signature collection launched in early 2009. In June 2008, Ganz opened the Webkinz eStore, where users can buy virtual items such as furniture, clothing, charms, and online-only pets. eStore items can only be used in conjunction with an active Webkinz or Webkinz, Jr. account.

Sales of plush Webkinz and Lil'kinz are limited to the United States and Canada, however virtual pets can be purchased from the eStore by international residents. Secret Codes issued in conjunction with virtual pets can be used the same way as Secret Codes attached to plush pets. Webkinz eStore

Hi!

I'm Hal from marketing at Terapeak, where we specialize in eBay Marketplace Research.

Since we're still struggling to keep up with this Webkinz craziness, we thought you might enjoy our new index that pits the critters against one another in a friendly battle of eBay-salesdom. It's interactive and comes with a shareable widget (top-right corner) that embeds easily into any blog -- kind of like those CNN election-trackers, only maybe less fantastical. Check it out to see which Webkinz creatures are selling best on eBay!

Here's the link: http://www.terapeak.com/webkinz/

From what we've gathered, Monkey is king of the jungle in terms of total sales (albeit with hefty competition from Elephant), while Unicorn takes highest average price by three lengths. (Is that really fair? Don't unicorns have superpowers?) Here at Terapeak, we can't help but feel a bit sad for Turtle in last place.

Please feel free to use the index and/or widget yourself, and encourage anyone else to as well!

My experience with Webkins is just terrible. The site won't recognize my son's username AFTER I set it up for him. There is no possible way to redo it since the code is entered -even though the darn site won't recognize it. No way to contact anyone really bothers me. I've wasted hours/money on this.

What a great site for parents to share with their kids. Now parents finally have a way to gain some online knowledge with their children. This will be a plus for parents who want to stay active and involved in their children's online world as they mature.

webkinz are great little toys that provide education and fun for the kids. So parents should love them to because the kids desire to play with and use them AND they get education at the same time.

The wonderful webkinz are little furry creatures that give and give.
