Let's Keep An Eye Out For These Strange And Complex Creatures!

Far under the sea, live strange and intriguing creatures, called squid. They are the largest soft bodied invertebrate on earth and they use the original form of jet propulsion to create motion, so they can comb the ocean depths for food.

Squid like to eat lobster, shrimp and all kinds of fish and sealife. Using their long tenacles to catch their prey, their extremely sharp beak severs the nerve cord on the backs of these creatures causing paralysis. This makes it quite easy for those sneaky squid to snare their prey and have a very sumptuous meal, indeed!

Look Out! They're EVERYWHERE -- and, most especially, right here on Squidoo!

Largest Recorded Squid In The World.

The first squid sighting was by crewmembers of a French steamer, the Alecton in 1861, off the shores of the Canary Islands. The largest RECORDED squid is 59.5 feet long and weighed 1 metriton.

During World War II, a British Admiralty trawler was sitting off the Maldive Islands, in the Indian Ocean. A crewmember named A.G. Starkey, reports that he was on deck one evening and as he gazed into the water, found himself looking into the large green eye of a giant squid!

The average size of a squid is generally between 19.7 to 42.7 feet and weighs between 100 to 661 pounds. To gauge the length of the squid, Starkey walked along the side of the 175 foot long trawler and said that the length of the squid matched it! WOW! Can you imagine?

The Ink Factory

We're still trying to capture pictures of giant squid in their natural habitat. They don't function well in warmer water, closer to the surface, so they generally stay hundreds of feet below the surface, which requires extremely sophisticated and costly research gear to observe them.

Sperm whales are their natural predators and they will fight for survival, often wrapping their long tenacles around a smaller whale and drowning them. They have also been known to squirt ink at their enemies, which gives them time to get away!

Squiddy The Camo Artist

The skin of a squid is covered in chromatophores and they can change color to suit their surroundings, which is a way of hiding out to keep their predators from seeing them.

In order to move about, the squid has something called a "siphon", which is located at the front of the mantle, or the largest part of the body.

By sucking water into the mantle cavity and quickly shooting it back out in a strong fast rush, they create a form of jet propulsion. Changing the direction of the siphon creates a change in the direction they wish to go.

"The Kraken" Adapted Into A Movie - Clip from "Pirates of the Caribbean".

Who knows? Maybe this story was true and was handed down through forklore.

Squid have VERY large eyes!

Squid have a torpedo shaped body with 5 pairs of arms and one pair are longer and thinner than the others. They have a distinct head with a very sophisticated nervous system and brain with the largest eyes of any other living creature. They inhabit the far depths of the ocean, between 600 to 13,300 feet below the surface. Some giant squid have eyes as big as an 18" basketball!
