Wong Fei Hung

Wong Fei Hung is the most portrayed character in movie history. He was a martial artist, a master of Hung Ga (a style which according to legend was named after Hung Hei-Gun during the time of the Qing Dynasty). He choreographed the famous Tiger Crane Paired Form Fist, which incorporates his "Ten Special Fist" techniques and he was also famous for a technique known as the "No Shadow Kick.

Wong Fei Hung has been portrayed in movies by such famous people as Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Jet Li and Kwan Tak Hing who made so many Wong Fei Hung films that he was nicknamed "Master Hung". Kwan Tak Hing portrayed Wong Fei Hung in over 75 films - Wikipedia can't make its mind up of how many Wong Fei Hung films there were in this series, so far i found two different numbers 77 and 99. The reason for this is that many of the films Kwan Tak Hing made have disappeared or deterioted beyond use.

Three reasons to love Wong Fei Hung

  1. He was a medical doctor who practiced and taught acupuncture.
  2. He was a great martial arts teacher.
  3. He was the inspiration of over 100 movies.
In all honesty there are a lot more reasons why to love Wong Fei Hung. He was a true legend. A legend so powerful that if he had been Greek he would have been the King of the Gods.

We all know that over the years stories about real people get blown out of proportion but you have to be a true hero for your story to get to told so much. Wong Fei Hung came from a time when they didn't keep that many written histories and the stories were past down by word of mouth. As such a lot of the stories we see of Wong Fei Hung nowadays are mostly fiction, but a fiction that is born from fact.

Drunken Master

Jackie Chan as Wong Fei Hung

Wong Fei Hung is responsible for helping Jackie Chan breakthrough into stardom. In the Drunken Master Jackie Chan played a young and mischievous Wong Fei Hung. This film established the comedic kung fu genre and was a worthy follow up to Snake In The Eagles Shadow. Together these two films put Jackie Chan on the road of success.

Since this is a comedy most of the film is of course fiction but I have to note that the role played by the Drunken Fist master, Beggar So (dubbed as Sam Seed) was a real associate of Wong Fei Hung.

Drunken Master's sequel was called Dance of the Drunken Mantis and was again directed by Yuen Woo Ping with Simon Yuen reprising his drunken beggar role but because this film didn't contain Jackie Chan many didn't acknowledge it as the true sequel. In 1994 Jackie Chan released Drunken Master II aka Legend of the Drunken Master.

Drunken Master Trailer

Drunken Master Trailer

Wong Fei Hong (Jackie Chan) is sent to train under his uncle, a wine guzzling master famous for crippling his students. Desperate to escape this brutal teacher's cruel regime, he flees but is confronted, humiliated and beaten senseless by a hired assassin (Hwang Jang lee). Angry, ashamed, hungry for revenge, the wayward Fei Hung returns to his drunken master. This is the second collabration between director Yuen Woo Ping and Jackie Chan was another huge box-office hit, drawing in 8 million HK dollars on its run. Blending intresting martial arts moves with slapstick comedy (Jackie trademark). "Drunken Master" ushered in the new genre of comedy kung fu and estableshed Chan as its uncontested king.

Wong Fei Hung at a Glance

Wong Fei Hung or Hwang Fei Hung () (1847?1924) was a martial artist, a medical doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, and revolutionary who became a Chinese folk hero and the subject of numerous television series and films.

As a healer and medical doctor, Wong practiced and taught acupuncture and other forms of traditional Chinese medicine at 'Po Chi Lam' (???), his private practice medical clinic in Foshan, Guangdong Province, China, where he was known for his compassion and policy of treating any patient. A museum dedicated to him was built in Foshan.

Amongst Wong's most famous disciples were Lam Sai Wing, Leung Foon, Tang Fung, and Ling Wan Gai. He was also associated with Chi Su Hua, aka Beggar So.

Around The World In 80 Days

Sammo Hung as Wong Fei Hung

Sammo Hung finally got his chance to play the legendary hero Wong Fei Hung in the Jackie Chan film "Around The World In 80 Days". Even though it is only a bit part it is well worth mentioning.

The Wong Fei Hung character also appeared in four of Sammo's films, a role reprised by Kwan Tak Hing (Master Hung). These films being Skyhawk, The Magnificent Butcher, The Magnificent Kick and Dreadnought.

Another thing worth a mention here is that Sammo Hung and Wong Fei Hung do not have the same last names. In ancient China they put the last name first so Wong Fei Hung's last name is Wong.
