Woodburning Designs and Patterns!

The art of woodburning is a fairly easy craft to learn! If I can teach myself how to woodburn, you can surely learn how to make an item beautiful and unique by woodburning.

To jump start your creative imagination, below you will find woodburning designs, woodburning patterns and woodburning stencils for:

Borders
Green men
Wood spirits
Bald eagles
Owls
Western (cowboys, bullriders, and more)
Native American (tomahawk, headdresses, and more)
Naval (lighthouses, pirate ships, battleships, and more)
Transportation (cars, trains, planes)
Floral
Landscapes
Angels
Fairies
Dragons
Plants
Unicorns
and many more different 'period style' woodburning designs!

Woodburning Techniques and Tips

For darker lines, move the woodburning tool more slowly.

Don't use pressure on the point or the wood. Let the heat from the woodburning tool do the work.

Always turn the wood as needed so that hands and arms are comfortable while woodburning.

Rest the hand holding the pen over the other hand that acts as a bridge. This will help to keep the woodburning hand balanced and at ease.

To clean the point, lean the handle away and scrape the point over very fine sandpaper.

For best woodburning results, clean the Woodburner frequently.

Use the universal point to create:
Lines for patches, "cross hatching " and "basket weave" patches

Use a shading point to create:
Solid borders, Leaves

Use a flow point to create:
Detailed lines between patches, Outlines and dots, Spirals, Flowers

Use a cone point to create:
Circles and dots, Stitch lines around designs, Signatures

Adding color

Many woodburning artists add paint to their projects, but I prefer the natural look. To paint in color, apply any of the following paints:

Transparent glaze acrylic paint
Water-based paint
Genesis Artist Color
Synthetic oil-based, heat-set paint

For a protective finish, to your woodburning art, apply two or three coats of spray satin varnish

DIY - Make All The Free Woodburning Patterns You Desire!

DIY Steps To Make Free Woodburning Patterns
Woodburning projects don't have to be fancy! If you find a picture you like, you can use tracing paper to put over the picture and trace it, or plain paper (with a good light) to trace it. If the design is too intricate for your skills or taste, just simplify the picture by tracing the form you want.

Next, place a sheet of carbon paper over your wood and transfer your picture to your wood. You just made your first free woodburning pattern! That is exactly how I got the picture of the steer head (my unfinished picture) below.

The woodburned prayer is a compilation of 1Chr. 29, and Psalm 145. I would have to go visiting to friends and family to be able to show you pictures of my other woodburning projects. The two burned wood art in the pictures above are all that's in my home. I (when the feeling strikes me) create and give my woodburning art as presents.

You don't have to buy books that are specifically woodburning stencils or patterns. Besides, there's not very many of them on the market, and everyone has them!

Get creative and woodburn a design that no one else has. Use the methods I use, and check out the other craft books below for pictures patterns and stencils that will truly be unique.

Wildlife Woodburning Designs

Wildlife Designs: Original Patterns for Your Favorite Craft (Paperback)

Versatility is the main attraction of this manual that offers 30 handsome wildlife woodburning designs and 10 border designs suitable for transfer. Information is included about techniques for transferring both line and tonal patterns, illustrations are marked to show how to isolate parts of the design to use in conjunction with other images or alone, and the use of computers and copiers to modify patterns is also discussed. Although created for pyrography (woodburning) projects, the patterns are suitable for engraving, lino cuts, quilting, relief carving, stained glass, stencils, and tole painting-with color photos of finished pieces in all of the formats gathered in a gallery at the end of the book.

The Illustrated Bald Eagle: The Ultimate Reference Guide for Bird Lovers, Woodcarvers, and Artists (The Denny Rogers Visual Reference series) (Paperback)

Written with the artist or sculptor in mind, this painstakingly detailed reference to the bald eagle covers the anatomy of the bird down to a feather. Exact anatomical sketches-done in multiple dimensions, from various angles, and in many different postures-provide a visual study unmatched by other references. Some drawings focus specifically on one part of the bird, such as a single contour feather, while other portraits show the whole animal in motion-soaring, diving, and perching. Color charts of the top and underside of the bird and a gallery of award-winning interpretations of the bald eagle round out the collection, making it an enduring source of inspiration for artists and woodburning designs.

The Illustrated Owl: Screech & Snowy: The Ultimate Reference Guide for Bird Lovers, Woodcarvers, and Artists (The Denny Rogers Visual Reference series) (Paperback)

With clear instructions and detailed illustrations, this guide reveals how artists can render anatomically correct versions of two popular owl species: the screech owl and the snowy owl. Wood carvers, sculptors, and other artists are provided with detailed line drawings that document the bird's natural behavior and demonstrate how to realistically portray their heads, beaks, and claws as well as their top and underside feather patterns. More than 50 scaled illustrations of the outsized snowy owl are accompanied by convenient scale charts, while nearly 100 life-size drawings are offered for the smaller screech owl. An opening section on the physiology of both species and their habits, comprehensive field notes, and exclusive color charts with paint references by Lori Corbett complete this invaluable resource.

Woodburning Patterns of Wood Spirits and Green Men

Wood Spirits and Green Men: A Design Sourcebook for Woodcarvers and Other Artists (Paperback)

The 40 patterns included in this guide for carving green men and wood spirits out of wood are appropriate for carvers of all skill levels, and could be awesome woodburning designs. A recent term for a loose archetype-usually the head of a man within nature or a man as part of nature-the green man can be documented as early as A.D. 30 as a Roman architectural accent. The patterns show the green man in his wide range of emotions-happy, sad, miserable, or mischievous-with descriptions of how the wood spirit is anchored to nature not by the imagery of leaves and foliage but by the media on which he is depicted. The wood spirit walking stick patterns show realistic human faces that appear out of the bark or grain of the wood branches or logs in which they are being carved.

As you can see, this pattern book is for wood carving, but look below at the patterns that are included. These patterns can easily be transferred onto wood for a woodburning design.

Living Organisms Woodburning Designs

Biological (Pattern & Design Collection) (Paperback)

BIOLOGICAL is a sequence to TEKNOLOGICAL, published by The Pepin Press in 2004. Where as the designs in this first volume were based on mathematical formulae, BIOLOGICAL is inspired by living organisms. The great work of Ernst Haeckel (Kunstformen der Natur, 1899) has been taken several steps further: handdrawn depictions of animals and plants have been digitally retraced and given perfect geometric symmetry. The resulting images reveal the shapes of organisms and, more strikingly, their underlying graphic structures, which, in turn, form the basis for almost endless patternmaking possibilities, including woodburning designs
