Easy Kids Crafts Ideas Using Wooden Spoons

Wooden spoons are an excellent choice if you are seeking kids craft ideas for younger children.

I am a qualified nursery nurse and regularly include wooden spoon crafts when planning fun, educational activities for the children in my care. They are low cost and ideal for groups.

They are also useful for birthday parties if you are stuck for activities for the kids.

Wooden spoons are easy to obtain from any supermarket and of course they're commonly used in the kitchen.

Three Wooden Spoon Craft Ideas

Here are three wooden spoon craft ideas that your children can make very easily using wooden spoons.

Wooden Spoon Tiger

Make your own tiger from a wooden spoon

This is a fun and creative activity to do with your children which is a simple way to make a tiger using a wooden spoon.

What you will need

  • One wooden spoon (the size is unimportant).

  • Non-toxic glue.

  • Orange paint.

  • Orange paper for the ears.

  • Black felt pen for the nose and the whiskers.

  • Small sized plastic eyes.

  • Very thin black tapestry or embroidery wool.

  • How to make it

    1. Paint the entire front and rear of the spoon with the orange paint and leave to dry. If necessary, depending on the thickness of the paint, apply a second coat (I did in this instance).

    2. Cut the orange paper to make the two ears as shown in the photograph.

    3. Stick the ears to the back of the spoon using the non-toxic glue.

    4. Whilst the glue is drying, wind the black embroidery wool starting from the base of the handle to the lower part of the head as shown in the photograph.

    5. Insert a small amount of the glue at the start and end of the wool.

    6. Using the black felt pen, draw in the nose and whiskers (if you prefer it, you can use some of the wool for the whiskers instead and you will need to glue it in place).

    7. Lastly, stick on the eyes and leave to dry.

    Granny Wooden Spoon Puppet

Make your own granny from a wooden spoon

This craft is part of my Little Red Riding Hood wooden spoon puppet set which consists of Little Red Riding Hood, Granny and The Big Bad Wolf.

    What you will need

  • One wooden spoon (the size is unimportant).

  • Pink paint for the face.

  • Red felt pen for the nose and mouth.

  • Blue paint for the base of the spoon.

  • Black felt pen for tracing (this is optional).

  • Plastic eyes (this is optional and they can be drawn if preferred. I have drawn them in.

  • Paper for the clothes. I have used blue paper but another color can be used.

  • White wool or thin white thread for the hair.

  • Non-toxic craft glue.

  • Scissors to cut out the shapes etc. (as always, please ensure adequate supervision when handling sharp scissors).

  • How to make it

    1. Paint the base of the wooden spoon blue and the head (circular part) pink and leave to dry.

    2. To make the clothing, cut a triangular shape from the paper of approximately 4 inches x 3 inches x 3 inches (10 centimetres x 8 centimetres x 8 centimetres). Decorate as you please.

    3. Draw in the face - you can use plastic eyes if you prefer it. I have also added glasses in the spirit of the story.

    4. Glue the hair on using white wool or thin white thread.

    5. Wrap the triangle piece for the clothing around the base of the spoon and stick with glue.
