Wooden Boat Plan | Building Your Own Wooden Boat

Building your own boat is without a doubt really easy and fun to do. For just the cost of some boat building plans, raw materials, and your own labor, you can have a boat that you will enjoy for many years to come for fractions of the cost of buying a pre-made boat.

There really is no better experience in life than having a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment. And watching your boat come together will surely rank up there with just about any accomplishment you may have. In fact, many people who find the right wooden boat plan to follow end up building many boats over their life, even selling some for a handsome profit!

Learning Wooden Boat Building 

There are three basic steps in creating your wooden boat plan. Follow these and you are sure to have success in creating your very own boat.
  • Wooden Boat Research - Did you know that the art of wooden boat making as been around for 6 centuries? The very first boats that crossed the waters to discover the new world were made of wood and sealants. With some boats still in service over a hundred years later, it is no wonder boats made of wood are starting to regain popularity

    You should start by doing some simple research as to what kind of boat you are wanting to build. Maybe a nice canoe or 2 man fishing boat, or a dingy for your larger boat?

    Secondly, you will also want to research the availability of marine grade plywood for your boat, as this is the preferred lumber to use based on it's affordability, durability, and workability.

    Once you have done your research, you can then move on to gathering your materials and tools.
  • Wooden Boat Materials and Tools - It is really simple to make a wooden boat, and chances are you already have all the tools you will need right in your garage or basement. The most fancy tool needed is likely a square edge, which can be picked up for a few dollars at your local supply store.
    A good drill, and handsaw are necessary, as well as some screwdrivers, a hammer, and assorted fasteners. Outside of these basic tools, you will not need any specialty tools (or skills!) to build your boat with ease.
  • Wooden Boat Plans - Now you will want to get the right set of wooden boat plans so you can have a blueprint for your project. A good set of plans will have a complete materials list, blueprints, and written instructions included in your package. Anything less and you are asking for missed steps, frustration, and an incomplete boat!
  • Get Started Boat Making - Now it is time to take your materials list from your boat plans and head to the hardware store for your supplies. For a classic stitch and glue boat design, you will need some lumber, some epoxy for sealing gaps, various fasteners, and of course, boat paint!

    Now it is time to get started making your boat! Carve out a few hours in the evening and the weekends and you can have a boat that is sea worthy in just a few short weeks time. The enjoyment that you will gain during the project will make the effort very worthwhile.
