Wonderful Traditional and Wooden Toys
Although it is our business and our jobs we are passionate about what we do at our shop, Over the Rainbow in Bedford and online with our website, www.beyondtherainbow.co.uk
We stock a huge range of wooden toys and educational toys and are proud of our independent status which enables us to choose the products which we feel will be of greateast value to our customers. Many of our wooden toys are very traditional and are firm favourites with young and old alike.
We'd very much like to share with you some of our favourites and hope you might even pay us a visit.
Why not also take a look at our blog? Go to www.woodentoysshop.co.uk and take a look at some of our product reviews and articles.
No.1 favourite traditional wooden toy
The Sounding Rainbow Marble Tree
These are without question our favourite item in the whole shop. Designed by Swiss designer Matthias Utinger these stunning marble trees fascinate and enchant children and adults alike.Smaller than the larger tree they are still completely made from wood the sounding leaves are coloured using natural wood dyes and oils to produce a wonderful rainbow effect.
You place the supplied marble at the top of the tree and watch and listen as it falls upon each leaf of the tree, producing a subtly deeper (and perfectly tuned) note each time. As the tree is smaller the notes are of a higher pitch than the large tree.
I have yet to see a customer that didn't beam a huge smile the first time they try the Marble Tree.

We love puppets and science toys too
At www.beyondtherainbow.co.uk we just love all our toys (we take a lot of time choosing them!). As well as all our wooden toys we have a massive collection of hand puppets and some really lovely finger puppets and childrens theatres too. They are brilliant for allowing children to develop their imagination and story telling skills. We have also developed our range of fun scientific toys for older children too, mant of which have been endorsed by the Science, Natural History and Imperial War Museums in London. There are also many other specialist toys to covering many subjects such as electronics, solar power and chemistry. Why not take a look and see if anything takes your fancy.
STOP PRESS: Forgot to mention that we will be launching 2 specialist websites soon for puppets and science toys. We will announce them here of course.
Toys and Learning
The importance of playtime
Play is one of the many ways that children learn. Children who have access to a wide range of well selected toys and an opportunity to experience varied playtime are more likely to be challenged and stimulated. Studies have found that they reach higher levels of intellectual development, socialisation and emotional development regardless of their sex, race or social class.Parents and carers should be looking to encourage play with toys that stimulate mental development and are appropriate for the child's abilities. Toys should also be responsive to the child's movements and provide feedback for the child (either physically, visually or auditory) when manipulated. Whether playing alone or with others, quietly or with enthusiasm, play is the way children explore their world, learn new sensations and create imaginary friends and places.
Here's what we've been reading, playing, listening to!.... no toys here!
We all need to relax now and again!
