Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest (Timber Press Field Guides)
Amazon Price: $9.39 (as of 02/17/2012)![]()
"This book got an award from the American Horticultural Society, and at first read, it deserves it. While a little heavy for a backpacking trip, it would easily fit into a day-pack for a trip to a high mountain meadow or other heavily flowered location. It is well organized, and the flower photos are detailed enough to be useful." Morgan R.

Apple Cheddar Scones
From Washington State Apple Commission

- Serves: 6 scones
Did you know...Washington State is the Apple Capital of the World?
Unlike traditional scone recipes that call for generous amounts of butter and cream, this version is leaner and lighter, though rich in apple flavor. Try these for breakfast while sitting 'round the campfire in Woodland, WA.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 Gala or Golden Delicious apple - cored and finely chopped
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 large egg white
- 1/2 cup low fat milk
Instructions
1) Heat oven to 400°F. Grease an 8-inch round cake pan. In medium bowl, combine flour, wheat germ, sugar, baking powder, and salt. With pastry blender or fork, cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Stir in apple and cheddar cheese.
2) Beat egg white and milk until combined. Add to flour mixture, mixing gently, until soft dough forms. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and knead 4 times.
3) Spread dough evenly in cake pan and score deeply with knife to make six wedges. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until top springs back when gently pressed. Cool until warm or room temperature.
