Music History In The Making
While researching this lens I realized how the Woodstock concert is a huge part of our music history. Woodstock turned out to be much more than the basic "music concert" circulating during that summer of love. Below you can see a list of the bands that denied their invitations, some even regret not showing up.
Controversy surrounded the Vietnam War and it seemed like nobody agreed with this war. The Woodstock concert was a peaceful protest about the Vietnam War and towards our government. Protests were happening every where. To Hippies, Deadheads, and music lovers, the Woodstock concert forever changed our music history.
To read more about Max Yasgur's fight for our freedom to speak at Woodstock you can read more here at Woodstock Was . . . It's more about what happened before this concert took place, it almost didn't! Max Yasgur addressing the town's committee, the Woodstock Venture group and how this 3 day music festival almost did not happen! Thank you Max Yasgur, you changed our music history for all time and for generations to come.
News reporters were every where, Police and politicians were nervous about the size of the crowd being half a million strong!
500,000 "hippies" showed up and listened to Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, the Who, Grateful Dead, Country Joe, "Fixin' To Die" song. "Fixin' To Die" song is the song known as "Give me an "F" or the "1-2-3 what are we "fightin' for" song, by Country Joe McDonald about the Vietnam War. The Woodstock music festival was basically the hippies peaceful protest to what was going on in Vietnam.
I have always "THANKFUL" to the men and women whom have served our country and kept us all safe from harm. Americans are in your debt.
My Grandfather served in World War 1, my father was a Marine in World War 2, along with 2 of my Uncle's, both of them died as pilot fighters. My Aunt was in the Navy and my older brother was called to serve in the Vietnam War.

The Pied Piper of Woodstock
By Artie Kornfeld
More than a mere three days of peace, love, mud, and music, the 1969 Woodstock Music & Art Festival was a cultural landmark in a tumultuous decade. It was the brainchild of Artie Kornfeld, songwriter, music producer, and so-called "Pied Piper of Woodstock." In his memoir, Kornfeld traces his life from early musical prodigy to organizer of the concert that changed the country.
This is a quote from one of my valued visitors, The Health Lady. "Artie Kornfeld's "The Pied Piper of Woodstock" not only is it a totally amazing recollection of the times but Artie doesn't make a single penny off of the book. As with everything Artie does related to Woodstock, all of his profits are donated." You can read the entire post below in the Guestbook.

1-2-3 What Are We Fightin' For?
Country Joe McDonald
Give Me an F, U, C, K, What's that spell? What's that spell.....
Well, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.
So come on Wall Street, don't be slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of its trade,
But just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.
Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Now you can go out and get those reds
'Cause the only good commie is the one that's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.
Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don't hesitate
To send your sons off before it's too late.
And you can be the first ones in your block
To have your boy come home in a box.
And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Day 4 Of Woodstock, The Lost Day
Monday, August 18, 1969
Woodstock Music Festival, Day 4 of WoodstockThe lost day of the Woodstock Music Festival took place on Monday, August 18, 1969. The attendance had dwindled down to about 180,000 thousand people. For those that stayed to hear Jimi Hendrix play, they got to hear the Hendrix version of the "Star Spangled Banner"
The band was introduced as "The Jimi Hendrix Experience," but Hendrix quickly corrected Chip stating that they were now the "Gypsy Sun and Rainbows, for short it's nothin' but 'A Band Of' Gypsies" and launched into a two hour set, the longest of his career. As well as the two percussionists, the performance notably featured Larry Lee performing two songs and Lee sometimes going solo while Hendrix played rhythm in places.
The festival was relatively free from difficulty except that one of Jimi's guitar strings snapped while performing "Red House." The band was exhausted after being up all night but Jimi with his guitar, managed to deliver a memorable rock and roll performance, climaxing with his rendition of the The Star Spangled Banner. It was a solo improvisation, now regarded as a special symbol of the 1960s era and especially the Woodstock music festival.

- Very nice perspectives on Woodstock. There should be more movies about the events leading up to the concert. It's as interesting as the concert itself.

- Fab leans but where is Incredible String Band at Woodstock? Of course being shoved between Keef Hartley and Canned Heat did not help them get into the movie and on records, but there are a few YouTubes of their performance there :-)

- I was only a year old when this took place, but I've been told about it and heard about it my whole life. I'm an old hippie at heart and would have loved to have been one of those 500,000 in the crowd. That was a once in a lifetime event.
Thanks for the lens

- I had so much fun here reliving good times. I am so glad to see that you are showcasing Artie Kornfeld's "The Pied Piper of Woodstock" as not only is it a totally amazing recollection of the times but Artie doesn't make a single penny off of the book.
