How Will This Aging Hippie - Who No Longer Inhales - Celebrate the Woodstock Music Festival?
I used to joke that that I was at the Woodstock Music Festival rolling in the mud, singing, dancing and avoiding the brown acid. Although that is not true, the colorful images on TV of the crowds, clothes, mud, music, peace and love, are indelibly etched in my mind as if I had actually been there. This Festival is still and will forever be, the world's greatest and most memorable rock and roll concert event.
The images that I remember were from the television and magazine images that I saw of my fellow hippie/baby boomer generation celebrating at this event. There were the half a million kids there, stoned, wet, muddy, and many half-naked, celebrating the rock music and practicing the peace and love that defined my generation. It truly was "the Age of Aquarius".
Everything was "groovy" and "outta sight" and we couldn't wait to climb into my older brother's VW Bus and roll down the highway listening to the music that spoke directly to us.
My story is focused on then and now, 40 years later. My life as it turns out is filled with great ironies. Back then I didn't trust anyone over thirty and now I hardly know anyone under thirty. During Woodstock, we hippies wore our hair long and now we're thankful to still have enough hair left on the side to comb it over the top. We popped acid like they were M&Ms, but the only acid we have now is acid reflux.
We protested for peace and now we sit home just praying for some peace of mind. When we now talk about our "joints", we're only referring to the arthritis in our knees. This baby boomer is going to celebrate Woodstock in a manner appropriate to his aging baby boomer body. Just like the actual location of the Woodstock Festival, I have become mature, respectable, and a lot quieter.

My 2009 Way To Celebrate the Woodstock Music Festival Of 1969
So how is this balding ex-hippie going to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival? Well I can tell you that the only sign of smoke wafting through my house will probably be coming from the stove while I cook my fiber-filled cinnamon and raisin oatmeal. What I mean is that the only grass that I have seen in over twenty years is on my front lawn. But the 40th anniversary of Woodstock will be different. I have decided to turn back the clock to 1969 and spend the weekend with my old scratchy albums playing Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, and the Grateful Dead. I will listen to them with my old headphones that are about the size of my old VW Beetle.
I will use my bifocals to read those album liner notes that I used to quote to my hippy friends who all thought that I was so deep and far out. I will put on my faded bell bottoms and a dyed t-shirt and sing out loud until even the dogs leave the house looking for relief.
Even though my life has gone from practicing "free love" to "Honey, Let's wait for the Viagra to kick in," I'm going to revel in the 60's for at least this one weekend. Even though I will have to "turn on, tune in, and drop out" at my suburban air-conditioned house; if you pass by and see an aging hippy dancing and singing on the front lawn like Joe Cocker, just slow down and give him the peace sign.

Joni Mitchell Writes The Most Famous Song About The Festival - "Woodstock"
Although Half a Million People Made it To Woodstock - Joni Mitchell Did Not
"Woodstock" - Written By Joni MitchellWell, I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, tell me, where are you going
This he told me:
Said, I'm going down to Yasgur's farm
Gonna join in a rock and roll band
Got to get back to the land
And set my soul free
{Refrain}
We are stardust Stardust
We are golden
We are billion-year-old carbon Golden
And we got to get ourselves
Back to the garden
Well then, can I walk beside you?
I have come to lose the smog
And I feel myself a cog
In something turning
And maybe it's the time of year
Yes, and maybe it's the time of man
And I don't know who I am
But life is for learning
{Refrain twice}
By the time we got to Woodstock
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song
And a celebration
And I dreamed I saw the bomber jet planes
Riding shotgun in the sky
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation
We are stardust Stardust
We are golden
We are caught in the devil's bargain Golden
And we got to get ourselves
Back to the garden
* Joni Mitchell did not attend Woodstock on the advice of her manager who did not want her to miss a scheduled appearance on the Dick Cavett Show. Although she wrote the most famous song about the Festival, she had to watch reports of the Festival on a TV in a New York City hotel room.

Interesting Stories From The Woodstock Festival
-Although Woodstock organizers expected about 60,000 people to show up, nearly 500,000 people attended with a small percentage buying tickets.-As expenses increased due to changes of venue, a day pass to Woodstock Festival increased from $6.00 to $8.00.
-The Woodstock promoters expected the event to make them a profit. Since most attendees didn't buy a ticket, they initially lost $1.3 million and had to spend another $100,000 to restore the site.
-When the Grateful Dead played during the rain, several band members received shocks and the bass player Phil Lesh heard a helicopter radio transmission through his bass.
-By the time Jimi Hendrix wrapped up the concert on Monday morning, only 35,000 people were left in attendance.
-Major Groups that declined an invitation to play included: The Doors, Led Zepplin, Jethro Tull, The Byrds, Tommy James and the Shondells, The Moody Blues, and Bob Dylan.
-According to the Woodstock Nation LP, the last words uttered at the festival were "Brother, this is far out".
How Are Woodstock and Bethel, NY Celebrating The Woodstock Music Festival?
So how is the Woodstock Music Festival going to be celebrated in Woodstock and in Bethel, NY forty years later? Probably a little bit differently than I will be celebrating it.Contrary to popular belief, the 1969 Woodstock Festival did not occur in Woodstock, NY but in the town of Bethel, NY on Max Yasgur's farm.On the site today sits the Bethel Woods Concert Pavilion which opened four years ago. The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts includes an adjacent museum and concert space. The museum opened this past June and teaches visitors not only the Woodstock festival, but about 1960s historical highlights that all good hippies participated in.
The artsy town of Woodstock is planning to celebrate and has built many art exhibits, as well as scheduled musical performances. On August 15th, Woodstock's Bearsville Theater will host a concert in honor of the festival. Featured performers include Dave Mason, a former member of the group Traffic and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin.
The largest of the musical celebrations will be held at the festival's original site in Bethel. The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, which actually overlooks the original Max Yasgur farm where the festival was held, will present "Heroes of Woodstock", also on Aug. 15th. This event will feature numerous acts of the era including: the Levon Helm Band, Jefferson Starship, Big Brother and the Holding Company and others. So get in that old yellow VW Bus, bring an organic lunch and some patchouli oil and head on out to the celebration.

- Thanks for visiting my lens on Joe Cocker.
"By the time we got to Woodstock"...oh wait a minute I didn't get to go. I was, however, having as much fun and less rain lol.
I marched on Washington (oh it did rain while we were protesting - we stood under a huge plastic tarp), sat in and sat out and certainly tried to change the world and end the war in Vietnam. I would say many "coffeehouses" and "cornicopias" (gees do they use those words anymore?) saw my face. Today, however, I am a mom, grandmom and still a hippie inside, forever. Your lens is great keep it up. I keep adding to mine so keep on coming back - you'll see me here again! This lens brought me back to a time when people really did care about each other even if they did not know you - we all had and still have that spirit, even if sometimes it does not show on the outside; the war ended and the world has changed - just not the way we expected.

- You have a great sense of humor and I laughed out loud several times. I really miss the sixties and all of the fun we had back then. They don't make rock music like they used to. Hendrix and Joplin really could rock! Great story and pictures!
