Tribute To The Woodstock Music Festival Of 1969

The 60's were a turbulent decade. The assassination of JFK kept us fixated on the TV for days and gave us an insecurity that other decades had not felt before.

Those of us growing into our own during the 60's were also very much affected by the war in Vietnam. We would all watch the "war lotto" to see which of our friends and loved ones would go across the world to fight in a country that we had not even known had existed.

For me, like other teens my age,  the lotto was especially painful as I had a brother that was just 2 years older than I was and I wasn't ready to let him or my other friends leave our safe, secure Long Island town.

The 60's was also showing pains from the growing racial issues that faced us all. Segregation, desegregation, marches on Washington. We all needed to become equals.

Many families were separated by what has been termed the "generation gap". Parents not knowing what their children were doing and children learning not to trust anyone over 30.

There was confusion and mis-trust between the "straight" and the "heads", music was going in directions that most didn't understand.

The world was spinning out of control and we were all angry about something.

Then for 3 days in 1969 the world stood still

Friday August 15th, Saturday August 16th, and Sunday August 17th

This was Woodstock and our world and lives would be forever changed!

The Woodstock Festival Was Forced To Move

A bit of Woodstock trivia

The 1969 Woodstock Music Festival as most are lead to believe, was never held in Woodstock NY.

So Why Did They Call It Woodstock?

Click on the tickets to find out

Woodstock wasn't just about the music...

Relive the look & feel of Woodstock through home movies of those who attended. The last video is how the Woodstock site looks today.
Although they don't have the glamor of most of the music videos, I believe that they are just as important as this is...the real Woodstock!

Please note that you will leave this page when you view any of the Woodstock videos in this section and also the music videos further down the page, so please remember to return to us after viewing your selected video.

Woodstock Remembered

Woodstock 1969 Original Site

By the time we got to Woodstock....

Getting to Woodstock wasn't that hard but getting home was another story.

By the time I did arrive home, I was dirty, smelly and covered from head to toe with mud. We had walked (I was barefoot as I had my moccasins - dare I say stolen), when we left our belongings to wander around) for what had seemed to be hours leaving Woodstock to find a bus back to Grand Central so we could take the Long Island Rail Road back home.

We got some very strange looks on the rail road and no one would even sit anywhere near us, so we found a car just for us. I guess I don't blame them as we did look & smell quite frightening.

....We Were Half A Million Strong

Although I had brought several rolls of film with me to Woodstock, I only took a handful of photos.
At the time, I felt as though it was too "establishment" or "commercial" to capture this moment of time on film.

I also decided not to purchase any t-shirts that were on sale for the same reason.

Well only about 20% of the photos that I did take came out and what I wouldn't do to have an original Woodstock tee now (one that I got while I was there).
I could just kick myself.

Oh, I Get By......

....With a little help from my friends

Newspaper Clippings

As expected Woodstock was front page news in all the top NY newspapers for days.

Woodstock Turned Into a 3 Day Party

Originally billed as a 2 day arts, crafts & music fair, Woodstock was later changed to a 3 day festival at White Lake (town of Bethel) adding Friday August 15th.

Just look at the performers who you would have missed, had it only been a 2 day festival.

You also would have missed John Sebastian (who was not scheduled to perform but some of the performers were unable to arrive on time due to the heavy traffic and Route 17 was closed), Bert Sommer and magnificent Melanie who though only sang 2 songs, electrified the stage with Beautiful People.

The NY Thruway Closed Down

As they were only expecting about 30,000 tops, no one thought that were would be any traffic jams.

With over 500,000 showing up the New York thruway become a parking lot and had to be shut down.

They finally printed out brochures to sell tickets after they changed the concert from 2 days to 3 days. All seemed fine but then they moved Woodstock from Wallkill to White Lake.

Jimi Hendrix Live At Woodstock 2 Disc Set

Jimi Hendrix - Live at Woodstock

This 2 disc set is the one to get if your a Hendrix fan. As a first time ever this 2 disc set contains all 14 of Jimi's Woodstock songs and in their original order.

In addition this set also includes Color film footage of never before seen Jimi Hendrix press conference held September 3, 1969 at Frank's Restaurant in Harlem. Hendrix answers questions about his Woodstock festival performance, his rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" and the festival's cultural impact.

Disc 1 has the added feature of The Road To Woodstock: New documentary directed by Bob Smeaton featuring new interviews with Hendrix band members Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, Juma Sultan, and Larry Lee, engineer Eddie Kramer, and Woodstock promoter Michael Lang among others.

Such Excitement When My Tickets Arrived

The tickets came in a smaller envelope to protect them.

You'll notice that the price for the tickets are only $6 each. That was the price for advance sale tickets. If you check Ebay you will notice that everyone is selling the $7 tickets. There are very few of the $6 tickets and even a smaller number of $6 tickets still in a set. And no, they are not for sale.

I even kept the money order that I used to buy our tickets. Who would have known that Woodstock was going to be such a major event?

Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut) DVD

Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)

Whether you were at Woodstock or not, you can get into the Woodstock mood with this directors cut that is a full 222 minutes.

If you have a VHS player, I would suggest the VHS version as for me it seemed to have a bit higher quality.

After chanting for rain to cool down the crowd, the sky opened up and it rained, and it rained and it rained.

So How Did Woodstock Get Its Name?

At the time when Woodstock was just a glimmer in Michael Lang, Joel Roseman, John Roberts & Artie Kornfeld's eye and they were thinking of a name to call their venture group, they had remembered the quiet but artsy town where Dylan lived in Ulster County NY, called Woodstock.

Since they were planning a music & art fair the name seemed to fit right in, plus the reputation of the town of Woodstock as a musician and artist haven would be an added plus for their Aquarian Exposition.

They decided to call their corporation Woodstock Ventures Inc. & that my friends is how Woodstock got it's name.

If you arrived at this section by looking for the answer to the question
"So Why Did They Call it Woodstock?" just click again on the tickets to go back to where you were.

Richie Havens at Woodstock

Richie Havens was the first artist to perform and was only scheduled to play for 20 minutes. However due to traffic congestion a few performers were late and Richie performed an amazing 2 hours and 35 minutes.

You may be familiar with the song "Freedom" that Richie sang at Woodstock and has pretty much become his signature song. Well Richie had pretty much run out of material so made this song up on the spot.

It continues to be one of the most popular songs attributed to Woodstock. Unfortunately I could not find a legal video clip of Freedom to add to this page.

However, this clip has Richie opening up the festival with the first song played. As you will notice the stage wasn't even completed.

The triangular shapes near the top of the photo were where the empty food concessions were & a great place to watch the concert

John Sebastian

John was not scheduled to perform but filled in at the last minute because several performers were stuck in traffic.

This video has great shots of the crowd and you will also notice that John is smiling throughout the entire song. Can you not feel the love in this performance - this is the true Woodstock experience.

Do you have any special Woodstock Music Festival memories? If so please share them!

Iwas one of the lucky ones who went to Woodstock (and remember most of it :-) ), and it's an experience that has changed my life for the better. Even almost 40 years later I still can hear the music and get that peaceful feeling every time I smell cow manure (if you were there you'd understand that statement).

If you had any special moments or if Woodstock had a life lasting effect on you too, please share them.

And if you didn't make it to Woodstock do you think that you would have gone? Remember it was advertised mainly as an art fair with a bit of music tossed in.

Peace

Very Wow Lens! I didn`t get to Woodstock myself, but did go to The Atlanta Pop Festival the next summer. This festival, while not being as famous as Woodstock, actually had a larger attendance. Georgia state officials estimated that nearly 500,000 attended this 3 day festival. Good times were had by all, a bit foggy times if you know what I mean, and it did`nt even rain on us! Hendrix really rocked us all & I am now listening to "Spanish Castle Magic" as I type this! Kudos to you & I am lensrolling you & rating you a big 5 stars! Rock on late 60`s style I say! Cheers! Totally excellent!!! I was there too! Went back for the 25th reunion too. Not the Saugerties fiasco, but to the original site in Bethel. It was awesome too, no way to compare the two, but every body just showed up. No one advertised we were just there. Richie Havens, Melanie, Arlo, Mountain, Joe Walsh, Jimi's bass player and a few others. We built a sound stage and rocked. So many people showed up that after the first day you could get out or back in if you did try to leave.
It was a fantastic reunion!

Excellent site, man! I was 10 years old when Woodstock bloomed, but I was an AWARE 10 year old, due to my 17 yr old brother and 21 yr old sister. So I was a "junior hippie" and very much in tune with the significance of the event. The album and the movie became very important things in the development of my personality.

I was actually on vacation with my parents in another part of upstate NY during that time. We went to Cooperstown, and then to Niagara Falls. I don't think my folks knew that there was this raucous event being held several miles away. Hmmm... their loss. Mine, too. Peace out.

Yea, it was a real groovy time. I was on acid for the first two day's and I gotta tell you it was the best trip I ever went on. All the people, freedom and happiness one could ever want. I went to one festival after Woodstock but you know it wasn't the same. Woodstock just had that vibe. The only place I ever got a vobe like that was at hippie hill in Golden Gate Park in San Fran. Even today I get that vibe when I make my yearly pilgrimadge to San Fran.

Love you all,

I'm glad to see that you are enjoying this lens. Woodstock was more than a 3 day music concert, it was it's own community and taught me much about the true meaning of "love one another" and holds a very special part of my heart. I'd like to think that everyone who had attended still feels the power of sharing and has continued with this in their life.

Posted March 14, 2008

Did I read that right? Sha Na Na was almost the closing act at the last day of Woodstock? Ohmygawd . . . and I thought the Hell's Angels at Altamont was a disaster.

But what do I know, I was 7 years old at the time. So this "visual museum" of the Woodstock experience is very impressive. Excellent job, except for the header, "So How Did . . .": drop the apostrophe--it's means it is.

Incredibly complete coverage of Woodstock. How did you do it? I had just graduated college and was studying in France, but we sure knew what was going on! Fab music and love! Some trivia - In high school, Stevie Stills was in a great local band that played almost weekly at our dances - but the leader kicked Stevie out of the band, allegedly because he "didn't fit in." And guess who was the ONLY one who "made it!" ~Margaret

I was probably one of the few people that really was at Woodstock,,,,and then left! Drove down with my college roomate in his MG roadster. Light drizzle, traffic backing up, no top. He stayed, I turned the car around and drove back to the frat house. (He was gone for 10 days)

I didn't make it to Woodstock; had to work that weekend. I still became a hippie and revere Woodstock Nation as the ideal of our generation. I have amassed a collection of Woodstock artifacts that brings me pleasure, although not as much joy as having been there in '69. Still hoping for peace.

Woodstock '69
Words and Music by Joni Mitchell
copyright 1969 by Siquomb Publishing Co.

Well, I came upon a child of God
He was walking along the road
And I asked him, Tell where are you going?
This he told me

Said, I'm going down to Yasgur's Farm,
Gonna join in a rock and roll band.
Got to get back to the land and set my soul free.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

Well, then can I roam beside you?
I have come to lose the smog,
And I feel myself a cog in somethin' turning.
And maybe it's the time of year,
Yes and maybe it's the time of man.
And I don't know who I am,
But life is for learning.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and a celebration.
And I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes
Riding shotgun in the sky,
Turning into butterflies
Above our nation.

We are stardust, we are golden,
We are caught in the devils bargain,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.

This lens is dedicated to my Mom, who was not only nice enough to allow me go to Woodstock (and who saved tons of newspaper clippings about Woodstock while I was there) but who also taught my brother and I to always be true to ourselves.
We miss you
