Woody Allen: Neurosis and Genius by Alvaro Fernandez
from Distrikt Magazine
Back in 1978, I was spending the weekend at a friend's house in New York and "Everything you always wanted to know about sex* but were afraid to ask." was playing on cable, I was 13. The movie unfolds by portraying the definition to words related to sex like, nymphomaniac, aphrodisiacs, exhibitionism, ejaculation, etc. One of the segments of this film is about a giant killer tit that shoots Milk as it attacks people. This film was made in 1972, only I had not seen it. But it left a mark. I mean, to see Woody Allen dressed up as a sperm forming a line among many other "sperms", ready to be ejaculated.
Writer, Director, Actor Woody Allen was born on December 1, 1935, as Allen Konigsberg, in Brooklyn, New York. He is an auteur, one of the living few, meaning he has total control of his films from writing, directing, sometimes even starring, and all the way to final cut.

Woody entered the film industry in 1964 when he was hired to write the script What´s New Pussycat, but it wasn't until 1977 with Annie Hall that Woody Allen was able to show the world his caliber as an Artist. The film won an Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, among others. Annie Hall, in which he stars as a neurotic New Yorker who falls in love with a neurotic woman, is a movie for people who like smart dialogue, it deals with people talking about life and death, and love and sex, and relationships, and other real things. His innovative ways go as far as speaking to the camera and the use of animation, which was a rarity back then.
Then came Manhattan, Diane Keaton and himself again, plus Mariel Hemingway, Meryl Streep and beautifully shot in Black and white, a movie about New Yorkers searching for relationships, for love.
I think that watching Woody Allen movies of this period is a lot like spending a few hours with a bunch of people who are wondering about life's meaning, people who are dealing with life just like we are. They are not being followed by a stampede of exploding cars; they are dealing with the human problems of the everyday. All his films have intellectual, emotional, visual, and musical elements strategically orchestrated in them.
The way conversation scenes are choreographed by this genius is marvelous. The camera floats around while the characters enter and exit the screen; they are the truest representation of human interaction during dinners, parties, and other social gatherings.
Another thing that attracted me to Allen's movies was the fact that New York City was a character in most of them. Not only do they almost always take place in Manhattan but also you can feel the presence of the city in his films.
"My love life is terrible. The last time I was inside a woman was when I visited the Statue of Liberty."
Woody has dated a few of his co-stars including Louise Lasser, Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow. He and Mia Farrow never married but during their 12-year relationship adopted two children and had one together.
They both starred in thirteen of his movies of which a few stand out, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Alice.
He is now married to Soon-Yi Previn, adopted daughter of previous partner, Mia Farrow.

But years have passed; he has more Academy Award nominations (fourteen) for writing than anyone else, has been nominated for a total of 136 awards. He has done almost forty films in the last forty years. And then another masterpiece comes out of this short man's soul, Matchpoint, one of my favorite films of all time. Shot in England with mostly British actors. This treasure of a film is intelligently filled with small jewels that keep showing up as we are left open mouthed.
He is currently working on a project Written and Directed by him, which is still unnamed, which includes Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor. They are shooting in London as I write this.
