A lens on Woolworth's?
Okay, so it's a little goofy, but growing up, I remember going to Woolworth's and getting Garbage Pail Kids. I remember that strange smell of old plastic that always permeated the place. And if recent searches on the internet are any indication, I'm not the only one.
Note: This lens is on the American (and now defunct) Woolworth's store chain. Not the current European store chain. :)

- The Lunch Counter Sit-In
- You can't really talk about the history of America's Five and Dime without a mention of the lunch counter sit-ins. Most of us can't imagine a segregated restaurant, but once upon a time, such a thing did exist. During the Civil Rights movement, many brave students and civil rights leaders endured horrendous humiliation and degradation in order to receive the very thing our Constitution should have already provided: equality. This page details the sit-ins of the Greensboro, North Carolina Woolworth's. The lunch counter now stands inside the Smithsonian Institute.

- This is a short, but sweet letter to the editor of the NY Times in 2000. In the letter, the author admonishes those who put Woolworth's to bed and says that America is downright "un-American without those beloved emporiums."

- On April 8, 2009, My father will turn 80. He, and all of his brothers worked for Woolworths. I found this site while looking for pictures for his birthday party. We are having a Woolworth theme for him at our church...............Lots of old cronies and friends, who are still alive, are coming.
My dad was the assistant manager of #64 on Market Street in San Francisco from 1957-1960 He was then promoted to be the manager of the new Lloyd Center Store in Portland, Oregon. Thus, we loaded up the wagon and we headed to Beverly.
While in San Francisco, we lived 21 miles down the peninsula in a town called San Mateo. I remember either picking him up with mom, picking him up at train stop and the time he turned the corner and got right in the middle of a Salvation Army Parade. Alas, management does strange things to a person.
I remember cable cars, and Christmas. As he did office work on Sundays, I got to play with all of the toys!

- I loved Woolworth, it is the first store that I went to by myself when we came to America in 1950, The Horse in front of the store was my dream to ride and to this day have a fondness for that statue...I remember it took me all day to pick an item for .25 cents...I also have fond memories at a huge San Francisco Woolworths in the basement, that's where all the bargins where, it was quality then...thanks for taking me back to a nicer time....5*

- My parents bought our Christmas gifts there when it was Woolco. I remember my mom buying me a 12 inch Superman action figure and my three older brothers received Spider-Man, Batman and Robin. The brother who received Robin, soon after splayed the figures legs into the splits and proceeded to "wind" his legs as if it were a wind-up toy. After a few dozen turns, the rubber band which held the arms and legs together, snapped and the Boy Wonder was no more.
