A lens on Woolworth's?
Okay, so it's a little goofy, but growing up, I remember going to Woolworth's and getting Garbage Pail Kids. I remember that strange smell of old plastic that always permeated the place. And if recent searches on the internet are any indication, I'm not the only one.
Note: This lens is on the American (and now defunct) Woolworth's store chain. Not the current European store chain. :)

Indiana Jones 4!
I feel vindicated!
Okay, you might be asking what Indiana Jones 4 and Woolworth's have to do with one another. Basically, Woolworth's makes a nice little cameo appearance in the film.
New Haven, Connecticut's Chapel Street was done up 50s style and one storefront got the Woolworth's treatment complete with window dressing. I hate I couldn't see it! But at least there are photos.
Holy cow. There are actually Woolworth's videos on YouTube.
Betcha didn't know that!

Retro Woolworth's Christmas Ad
Woolworths Christmas ad from 25 years ago
From 1981 and my first video tape, this is a whopping two minutes long & stars Anita Harris, Bill Oddie, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Windsor Davis & Don Estelle, along with a troup of cossack dancers & chinese girls. Add a catchy tune & you have THE perfect ad! Bill & Tim are two of The Goodies - Graham Garden is curiously not in the ad.

- Woolworth's UK Virtual Museum
- Woolworth's in the UK is no longer a part of the original Woolworth's group, but it was until 1982. This page is a history of the British Woolworth's chain.
- The Lunch Counter Sit-In
- You can't really talk about the history of America's Five and Dime without a mention of the lunch counter sit-ins. Most of us can't imagine a segregated restaurant, but once upon a time, such a thing did exist. During the Civil Rights movement, many brave students and civil rights leaders endured horrendous humiliation and degradation in order to receive the very thing our Constitution should have already provided: equality. This page details the sit-ins of the Greensboro, North Carolina Woolworth's. The lunch counter now stands inside the Smithsonian Institute.

- The National Christmas Center in Paradise, PA hosts a historical Woolworth's Christmas exhibit. Their website contains a wealth of photos from the exhibit.
- Woolworth's Restaurants Frito Pie Recipe
- Can't say I've actually ever had it, but it seems to be a pretty popular dish. CD Kitchen offers this recipe for those craving this...um...interesting dish.
- Missing Woolworths: Letter to the Editor NY Times
- This is a short, but sweet letter to the editor of the NY Times in 2000. In the letter, the author admonishes those who put Woolworth's to bed and says that America is downright "un-American without those beloved emporiums."

You don't remember Woolworth's the like. Food Even as a kid I loved the meatloaf and turkey patties. Oh the bakery Orange twists to die for. The candy counter heaven for a little girl of 6-7 no more than 10. now this is all about the Woolworth's of Anderson, SC around the 1955-1960. Got to have a Coke float one day for lunch. No Good for me food either. just the float. In those days kids could walk around the store own there own with no fear. My cuz and I would walk around and around the toy self until we found that just right toy. Slinkys top coloring book got one of birds onces. Got a new Buster Brown shirt always. Went every Sat. My parents bought our Christmas gifts there when it was Woolco. I remember my mom buying me a 12 inch Superman action figure and my three older brothers received Spider-Man, Batman and Robin. The brother who received Robin, soon after splayed the figures legs into the splits and proceeded to "wind" his legs as if it were a wind-up toy. After a few dozen turns, the rubber band which held the arms and legs together, snapped and the Boy Wonder was no more. Posted August 05, 2008 |

We still have (a few) Woolies in the UK. Alas they are not like they used to be, nothing is. Shocked to read about the lunch counter thing. Posted June 22, 2008 |

Pastiche
I loved Woolworths! When it became Woolco and moved to the suburgs (sorta like Wal-mart ...) it went into a death spiral in the US. I miss my the 5-and-10 stores! Posted March 22, 2008 |
