20 Ways to Optimize Wordpress SEO
After converting all of my static html sites into Wordpress recently.. I found that my pagerank dropped to zero! For every single one of them.
Horrified, I went on a discovery to find out what I could do to "quick fix" the problem (being that I have to do everything myself but don't have a programmers' brain!)
This is the list of Wordpress SEO plugins and useful resources I've found and implemented, I'll be adding more as I learn more - please add your suggestions & feedback!
Every useful tidbit, awesome theme, or plugins I'm testing is discussed in my Wordpress blog @ http://pennybutler.com/wordpress

All in One SEO Pack
wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/
* Automatically optimizes your Wordpress blog for Search Engines (Search Engine Optimization).* Automatically optimizes your titles for search engines
* Generates META tags automatically
* Avoids the typical duplicate content found on Wordpress blogs
* You can override any title and set any META description and any META keywords you want.
* You can fine-tune everything
* Backward-Compatibility with many other plugins, like Auto Meta, Ultimate Tag Warrior and others.
Google-Sitemap-Generator
www.arnebrachhold.de/projects/wordpress-plugins/google-xml-sitemaps-generator/
* Automatically creates an XML sitemap of your blog which is supported by Ask.com, Google, Yahoo and MSN Search.* This one is also less troublesome than the other sitemap generators that I've tried.
* After creating, I suggest you submit your sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools.
MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer
www.maxblogpress.com/plugins/mpo/
* Prevents you from accidentally spamming all the sites that you ping* Prevents you from being banned and therefore, leaving more links in tact to your site.
* Won't ping sites if you just "edit" a post
* Provides a timer so that if you post a bunch of posts at once, it doesn't automatically ping everyone and make you look like a spammer.
Psychic Search
www.maxblogpress.com/plugins/ps/
* Shows you what people are searching for on your site so that you can create articles that match your visitors interests. * Shows you exactly what search engine they came from and whether your blog showed any "related posts" for their search terms.
* You can also configure customized messages for them.
StatsPress Reloaded
blog.matrixagents.org/statpress-reloaded/
* Visually shows you how your traffic is going* What terms were typed in the search engine to find your blog
* What page they landed on
* What browsers they were using, IP, etc.
* It's a great light-weight plugin.
SEO Automatic Links
www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-plugins/seo-smart-links
* Searches your post for keywords that match tags of other posts, in order to link to itself to encourage people to find relevant posts. * Different than the "related posts" type of plugins, this just links keywords and is configurable depending on the type of site you have.
SEO Post Link
www.maxblogpress.com/plugins/spl/
Prevents extremely long urls when you have long titles by ensuring that all the useless words are cut-out of the permalink. Simple Tags
wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-tags/
* Can automatically tag your non-tagged posts* Find Related tags, and display related posts
* Allows you to mass-edit tags to get combine or remove
* Automatically generates meta-tags
* Related Posts in RSS
* Automatically finds related tags from sites
Smart 404
michael.tyson.id.au/wordpress/plugins/smart-404/
If a page cannot be found, it will search your posts, pages, tags, categories for related posts and show them instead. Stumble for Wordpress
www.making-the-web.com/2008/10/12/stumble-for-wordpress/
* Gives another link to a relative article, but mostly it keeps people at your site longer if they click to related posts and therefore looks 'better' in the search engines eyes rather than people closing their page a minute or so after visiting.* You can replace the image with one of your own or use text in its place.
Enforce WWW Preference
txfx.net/code/wordpress/enforce-www-preference/
* The more people linking to you, the better your efforts in the search engines..and if search engines are indexing different versions of the same page, it may effect your SEO.
* By allowing people & robots to only see one "version" of you page www.pennybutler.com or pennybutler.com, it will make your search engine listings more uniform.
* By allowing people & robots to only see one "version" of you page www.pennybutler.com or pennybutler.com, it will make your search engine listings more uniform.
Google-Analyticator
cavemonkey50.com/code/google-analyticator/
I like this one better than Ultimate Google Analytics and Google Analytics for WordPress because Google Analyticator is tinier, the others - I tend to have to remove on occasion for memory errors and I just haven't had any problems with this one and it seems to do the trick, although most of the themes I've been using lately seems to already support google analytics. WP-GreetBox
omninoggin.com/projects/wordpress-plugins/wp-greet-box-wordpress-plugin/
* Depending on where the visitor comes from.. shows a message to remind them to do something* If the visitor comes from Delicious, it will remind them to bookmark your page
* If they come from Google.. reminds them to subscribe to your feed.
* From Stumble.. to give your post a thumbs up
* Digg > to Digg.. Twitter > to Tweet..
Yahoo.. Technorati.. and ANY custom domain you wish to add.
* That little reminder may be the reason your site gets "dugg" or "stumbled" more than others, etc.
WP-PDA
imthi.com/wp-pda
* Google cares if your site has PDA support, so do those browsing by PDA.* This awesome plugin automatically converts your site into a PDA readable format
* I've only checked my sites in an iPhone, but it worked flawlessly, then I checked Google's webmaster tools for their PDA checker and it worked in there as well.
Global Translator
www.nothing2hide.net/wp-plugins/wordpress-global-translator-plugin/
* Converts all your site content into multi-languages, making sure that your site can be found by non-English browsers. * It will also show all their results in the country's search engine results. I have heaps of traffic coming from Japan on one of my blogs, and a surprising amount of italian visitors.
Best Posts Summary
helpdeskgeek.com/wp-best-posts-summary/
* Best Posts Summary will automatically generate a summary post with the best content from the previous month, week or day.* The summary post is highly configurable, allowing you to choose the number of posts to include, the criteria for choosing posts ( most comments, most visits), choose from all categories or specific categories, the ordering of the posts (by title, by date written, randomly or by criteria (comments, visits), and the output of the post.
* Let your visitors be drawn to your most popular posts for the past x time, and also improves deep-linking with search engines.
NoFollow Free
www.michelem.org/wordpress-plugin-nofollow-free/
* This Wordpress plugin remove the "nofollow" attribute from your wordpress blog's comments* You can choose to remove the "nofollow" from just your comments
* Or from just "Registered" users comments (reward your regulars)
* Or from all comments
* You can then configure it to replace the nofollow only when the author posted X comments before and put back the nofollow when some blacklisted words are matched.
Meta Robots WordPress plugin
yoast.com/wordpress/meta-robots-wordpress-plugin/
* Prevent indexing of your search result pages, while still allowing the search engines to follow the links on them, by adding noindex,follow robots meta tags.* Disallow indexing of subpages to your homepage, category pages, author pages and tag pages, to prevent duplicate content.
* Prevent indexing of your login, register and admin pages by adding noindex robots meta tags.
* Add noodp an noydir meta robots tags, allowing you to opt out of DMOZ and Yahoo! Directory descriptions.
* Prevent Yahoo! and Google from indexing your feeds by adding a meta tag to their head-section.
* Prevent indexing of just your comment feeds.
* Disable author and date-based archives.
* Nofollow category listings on single pages and posts to prevent PageRank leakage.
* Nofollow your login, register and admin links, because they really don't need PageRank.
* Enforce a trailing slash on archives.
* Edit your .htaccess and your robots.txt from within WordPress.
* Assign robots meta tags to individual posts & pages.
* Verify your site with Google Webmaster Tools and Yahoo! Site Explorer.
* Add noarchive tags to your blog
Feedburner FeedSmith
www.feedburner.com/fb/products/feedburner_feedsmith_plugin_2.3.zip
* The plugin will detect all ways to access your feed (e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/feed/ or http://www.yoursite.com/wp-rss2.php, etc.), and redirect them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber.* It will forward for your main posts feed and optionally, your main comments feed as well.
WP Super Cache
ocaoimh.ie/wp-super-cache/
* WP Super Cache is a static caching plugin for WordPress.* Generates html files that are served directly by Apache without processing comparatively heavy PHP scripts.
* Speeds up your WordPress blog significantly.
* Digg-proof (if your site gets popular, your site wont die lol).. well...
How does it work?
* After WP Super Cache generates static html files, your webserver will serve that file instead of processing the comparatively heavier and more expensive WordPress PHP scripts.
* The plugin will only serve static html files to:
1. Users who are not logged in.
2. Users who have not left a comment on your blog.
3. Or users who have not viewed a password protected post.
SEO Friendly Images
www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-plugins/seo-friendly-images
* Automatically updates all images with proper ALT and TITLE attributes.* If your images do not have ALT and TITLE already set, SEO Friendly Images will add them according the options you set.
* Makes your posts W3C/xHTML valid
Admin Management Xtended
www.schloebe.de/wordpress/admin-management-xtended-plugin/#english
You need to Optimize your Post & Page titles, and if you've been doing it the "wrong" way for a while, you probably think it's going to be too time-consuming to go in and change all the titles one-by-one in each Post.. That's where this nifty lil plugin comes in.* Adds some icons to the Manage posts/pages view with AJAX-driven functions
* Toggles post/page visibility
* Change publication date and title
* Change page order via Drag'n'Drop
* Inline category management
* Inline tag management
* Change post/page title
* Change URL slug at a "click"
* Toggle Comments Closed/Open
Brilliant time-saver, even if you only have it enabled for the times you are doing the mass-editing.
