I'm a Wordpress fan myself, but when I started I had all Blogger blogs. Both have their pros and cons. I'll present both their strengths and weaknesses here, and let you decide.

The Pros of Using Wordpress

2490820744_1e1c841086.jpg?v=0When I talk about Wordpress here, I'm going to talk about a self-hosted Wordpress blog, from Wordpress.org.

1. The ability to customize your blog theme.

2. Wordpress is free, you only have hosting costs.

3. Most hosts offer one click installation through Fantastico or Simple Scripts.

4. The Wordpress community has developed hundreds of plugins to help improve the Wordpress functionality.

5. You can choose from hundreds of free themes if you don't want to invest in a custom theme for your blog.

Are You Trying To Pick a Host For Your Wordpress Blog?

I use Bluehost to host all my Wordpress blogs (and I have a couple). I've only ever had one issue, and it was quickly resolved with a phone call to Bluehost. The technician I talked to was knowledgeable and helped me solve my problem within minutes, and with only one phone call. I've been a fan since.

Bluehost lets you host Unlimited Domains on 1 Account for $6.95 Per Month.

I've been using Bluehost as my web host for a couple years now, and I've been very happy with their service.

They also throw in a free domain with their $6.95 hosting package.

The Cons Of Using Wordpress

1. You have to pay to have your Wordpress blog hosted.

2. Frequent releases of new versions.

3. Plugins are created, and maintained by 3rd parties, and are not supported by Wordpress itself if you encounter a problem.

Unlike other blog hosts, WordPress gives you the ability to create a blog that is tailored to your own tastes and needs. Sure, the codes, tags, and terminology can seem a little intimidating at first, but WordPress for Dummies breaks it all down to show you just how intuitive, friendly, and extensible the software really is.

satto76 says:

I like WordPress for the flexibility, but Blogger is equally good. If you focus on blogging tools don't matter much. The new update has given Blogger a new look, but I have seen many people still like the classic look.

HorseThinkery says:

I seem to have found myself using Wordpress these days, although I have used Blogger in the past. Very happy with Wordpress and have no particular desire to go back to Blogger :)

cuitlotus says:

Wordpress is the best for me. It is so easy to use and you can transform a dull theme to a very beautiful one. I've got a blogger acct. but I still stick to my WordPress acct. 4 me wordpress is the best.....

Afteretc says:

i have used both. i wish javascript was useable in wordpress - unless it is and i haven't figured it out.

SergioBatista says:

I think you can't compare wordpress.org with blogger as they are not targeting the same market. Blogger is better when comparing with wordpress.com, because it allows you to have ads, to make custom themes and is just as easy to use. Wordpress.org is an upgraded version that has no serious competition from Google, maybe GoogleSites.

DesmondDiz says:

I am all about self hosting word press if I am not building my own custom web site. This is only because I have not even considered using blogger, but maybe for my next site I will give it a go so I can make a more informed decision in the future. Very great post and well put together.

JaredBroker says:

Hosted Wordpress allows you to keep control of your own content and allows much easier tweaks for SEO. When your content is on Blogger, you are at the mercy of Google. No good!

Tolovaj says:

I use both and both has pros and con. For me wordpress works slightly better at the moment.

yarddog2k says:

I much prefer my self-hosted WordPress blog. I have control over my content and my blog cannot be wiped out because of some TOS crap. Blogger did this to me and gave no explanation as to why. Now I don't trust Free blogging platforms. Not even WordPress.com

eternaljoi says:

WordPress! Started blogging a couple of years ago. First Blogger, then WordPress.com and for over a year,WordPress.org. HTML still challenges me but learning it has been a real accomplishment.

jadehorseshoe says:

WP seems more powerful and is easier to master.

kendrafowler says:

Blogger does not need any technical knowledge to run a blog which is not so in the case of Wordpress. But Wordpress has so many interesting features that will make my blog look so unique- this is what I love about Wordpress.

fullofshoes says:

hmmmm... lots to think about. So far, I'm a HostGator and Wordpress lover. Always willing to keep options open though.

JanezKranjski says:

I use mostly self hosted wordpress cms and I lovin' it.

danteowong says:

duh..wordpress is the best. Period!

Blogger

NickyT says:

I'm having a tough time leaving Blogger, though Wordpress is more powerful. I think I'll stick with what I know: Blogger :)

MamaMarketer says:

For a small business, how do these two compare to Type Pad? I currently have my personal blog at Blogger and I like it.

Paula7928 says:

Blogger is so easy and I find Wordpress cumbersome.

waldenthree.net says:

Thanks so much for this wonderful Lens. I do not have a Wordpress Blog yet, but have a few Blogger blogs recenlty. It would be helpful to have some comments on your marketing strategy for each, Wordpress and Blogger. HOw do you get people to join ? On Wordpress, I like the fact that it's hosted at your webhosting service. I have a wonderful webhosting service for many years, very inexpensive and the tech support is the best !. I went through some terrible webhosting services before I foound Jaguarpc.com abut five years ago. Welcome linking with you and may i join one of your wordpress blog where we have mutual interests as a good way to explore synergy on business topics in future ?

Morgannafay says:

I've used both, and like them both. If I had more money I may go with wordpress, since their free service is not very good. So, in that respect they are kind of not the same thing. The reason I don't like the wordpress free blogs is that they hate zazzle links.

cffutah says:

gotta find the right blog (such as squidoo)

whoisbid says:

Blogger is better for me because I seem to be able to use it much easier

Paula7928 says:

Blogger

pyngthyngs says:

Although most of my blogs are wordpress based, the easy of use Blogger is pretty hard to match. That makes it a great place for beginners just starting off with blogging to get their feet wet. Of course its even easier because you don't have to deal with buying a domain and hosting as well. That being said, wordpress.com is just as easy as blogger/blogspot, but since this seems to be more focused on using the self-hosted version I digress.

njoylife42day says:

I use Blogger myself. However, after reading this lens, I may take a look into Wordpress.

stephanieelizabeth says:

I would prefer wordpress if I could afford to get all the premium options on all six or so of my blogs. I can't even afford it on one. Blogger is probably better for the average person, if you are running a business and have cash to burn, wordpress is definately the way to go!

camshaw007 says:

Blogger:)

KitandCaboodle says:

I use blogger and they now have more themes to choose from.

Blackmetallic says:

They both have pros and cons.
Wordpress is more customizable, but Blogger has potential especially with the new 2011 update.

ladykreiznah says:

Wordpress is too complicated for people who are not familiar with HTML. Worse, you can get your site hacked from getting the templates.
