Words Have Power - Be Careful What You Say

For most of my life I have worked in the social service field, and for 15 years I worked as a social worker in nursing homes. That was a very emotionally stressful job. which often required me to juggle 10 balls. or projects, at a time. During those stressful times, I would often emphatically tell my co-workers, "I'm going to quit this job and get a job as a Walmart Greeter!"

Well, as they say, be careful what you wish for, for you might get it. Not too long ago, in between other jobs, I worked as a Sales Associate at Walmart. I was one of the "lucky ones," I got to work evenings and every weekend! One evening the managers informed us that due to staffing issues, we each had to take a 30 minute turn as a door greeter.

As I was sitting on the stool in the front of the store, doing my part by greeting all the customers, I remembered those words that I had said over and over again. I had to laugh at myself, for there I was, a Walmart Greeter! It was a very striking example of how words have power, even words that you think you really don't mean when you say them.

We all tend to poke fun at the Walmart Greeters and make jokes at their expense. But I learned that it is actually a very difficult and demanding job. In my 30 minutes, I was afraid that someone would go through the scanners at the door and they would beep. I would then have to approach that person and ask to see their receipt. It may come as a shock to some, but people actually steal!

Walmart Greeters are expected to know everything. They have to deal with grumpy people and often get yelled at and accused of being stupid. They put tags on items people want to get refunded, and help people get shopping carts.

The Greeters stand at the front door in all kinds of weather. They get blasts of cold air in the winter. and hot air in the summer. They get to hand out plastic bags to people carrying dripping unbrellas.

So the next time you go to Walmart or any other store that has a greeter, be sure to give a cheerful hello to the greeter a the door. You will make their day.

I have not always believed that what we think, or say, has any effect on our lives. I believed it was important to have integrity and say what I meant. But I didn't take it to the extent that a friend of mine did.

I was aware that she was a member of Self Realization Fellowship, founded by Paramahansa Yogananda, She was very adamant about only saying things that were positive. From time to time, she would let slip a negative thought. Immediately, she would utter the words, "Cancel, Cancel" and make an erasing motion with her hand.

As I was her friend, I thought this was a strange, but endearing, behavior on her part. I really didn't think it had any effect on life in general. After I met my Walmart career goal, I have to admit I am taking a closer look at the whole concept.

What follows are some quotes from different ideologies and perspective on the topic of words and thoughts creating reality. It is amazing how much all of these writers, philosophers, scientists, and spiritual thinkers share in common.

At my previous data entry job, we often made mistakes (who me?). If we added an incorrect comment, we would then add a new comment that said, "Please disregard previous comment."

I have not been a big fan of channeled material and approach it with some skepticism. Still, it is interesting to read some of it and ponder the messages. It is up to each of us, then, to decide what to do with it. More recently I have been exploring Abraham and have been re-reading some of my Seth books.
