Lich has a proven track record of being a great host who has done many outstanding interviews over the years. I hope other businesses follow suit and join me in sponsoring a program that brings intelligence, humor and just plain great entertainment to a medium that is saturated with mediocrity.

Truth Be Told: Behind the Set of Words and Music with Lich

I was in the broadcast studio feeling worse as the time went by. Plans were to finish on the air and head over to the hall, where I was to sit down with Ron Wood for our conversation prior to the concert.

When we arrived everything was set..the chairs, the mikes and everything had been tested. There could be no room for error. This was a one shot deal. I recall the area set aside for the interview was darkened with a small light near by..nice ambiance.

I went back to review the interview the other day and still very much like the way it went. I'm certain Ron enjoyed it as well, because of his compliments. He mentioned more than once how we should do this with his "other mates". "They'd luv it" he commented in his English accent. I thought that was incredibly flattering.

Yes and Words & Music with Lich

Truth Be Told: Behind the Set of Words and Music with Lich

I have had the pleasure of interviewing Yes many times in a number of member configurations for both radio and television. I've spoken to all of them either one on one, two and/or three at a time and I've even chatted with a few members at one session when they toured in support on the "Union" disc. They were all especially nice gentlemen to me and always provided me with well thought out, eloquent, articulate answers.

For this piece, I will write about one Jon Anderson interview in particular; because of a few interesting "Behind the Set" stories I wish to share with you.

I was doing my afternoon broadcast at WCCC-FM in Hartford hours before Yes was to perform at The Hartford Civic Center.

I was featuring the music of Yes ("I've Seen All Good People" to be exact) when Jon Anderson entered the room. In his hand was a tambourine. I suspected he brought it with him, since I was aware that the band had just finished their sound check. I got up, walked over to introduce myself and told him to make himself comfortable behind the guest mike. He turned to one of my staff and whispered something. The assistance left the room and when she returned, handed Jon a Sharpie. Picture Jon Anderson drawing on this tambourine while the music played.

What happened next couldn't have happened at a better moment. I put on my headphones, as did Jon. I potted up our mikes as the song began to fade out and Jon started to sing along, which went over the air..it was very cool.

After what proved to be a great interview, where we discussed music, singing, astronomy, Channeling and Native Americans (all important topics for Jon) among other things. He then got up and without saying a word, left the tambourine on my satchel. What a fantastic gesture. I had more Yes music playing on the air and that's when Jon invited me backstage before the gig. He told me he travels with a tee-pee and sits inside to meditate prior to the performance. I found our interview to be intellectually stimulating and revealing of Jon's personality and there was no doubt he was a fascinating artist. I knew meeting him backstage would only confirm what I already knew. Trust me when I write, that being around Jon Anderson gives you a feeling of calm, peacefulness, the sense of one's inner self being tethered down and believe this..I'm one intensely passionate, obsessive compulsive type of guy. I had to go and I did.

Jon Anderson is a most unusually, interesting man and he and the music o

WHO THE HECK IS "LICH?"

Lich's beginnings...

Lich began his life in music playing drums at the age of 2. At 7, he was attending The Julius Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT. Subsequently, Lich was accepted to the prestigious, internationally-acclaimed, Peabody Conservatory of Music, in Baltimore, Maryland.

Upon leaving the Conservatory, he was chosen as one of the select few understudies of the legendary Joe Morello, former drummer of the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet. While studying with Morello, he toured with jazz greats Charles McPherson, Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff and Lonnie Smith, with whom he also recorded.

Upon completing his tours with Smith, the next twenty-five plus years were dedicated to his #1 rated radio program in the State of Connecticut. That program was followed by a successful television show. It was during this time, Lich pursued his craft in the radio/television industry as a music broadcast journalist, interviewing hundreds upon hundreds of famous musical artists.

Lich is widely recognized for his extensive knowledge of all music genres and his ability to immediately provide his audience, or any music aficionado, with historical and current information. He also displays the uncanny ability to be able to put any musician at ease, so that within their interview, they are candid, forthcoming, and most revealing about their life and career.

Throughout his years in broadcasting, Lich expanded his gifts and talents to create various radio and television programs that were immensely popular with the artists, as well as, the audiences.

One program of particular note that had a 20 year run was "The Concert Scene". It became Connecticut's most popular radio question and answer call-in music program - which was also broadcast on WGBY/PBS television - where Lich interviewed just about every major entertainer who performed in Connecticut.

"The Concert Scene" enabled Lich to travel to Los Angeles, New York City and Cleveland to broadcast his radio interviews from the Grammy and Emmy Awards shows, along with the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.

WHO THE HECK IS "LICH?" Part II

Lich's latest adventures...

Lich's next creative endeavor began in 1991, while on radio.

In 1997, on Connecticut Public Television/PBS (CPTV), the program he created/developed, wrote, hosted, produced and executive produced became "Words & Music with Lich."

This program, Lich describes as, "thought provoking, insightful and compelling and is rich with spirited, colorful conversation, due in part, to my unconventional style of questioning. It bridges the gap between music documentaries and performance shows."

Lich adores the opportunity to dialogue with others about broadcasting and has been quoted as saying "In terms of the evolution of the craft, our art form, there is much to learn in the classroom and then there are "discovered" experiences.

These "discovered" experiences happen to be knowledge that has been acquired by a veteran broadcaster (through years of self-education) and then subsequently, "passing that baton" on to future broadcasters by what has been learned and cannot be found in books."

That is why Lich felt the need to design 3 unique courses and taught these classes at Asnuntuck Community College and the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. Not only were his classes filled up before each semester began, his student evaluations were of the highest ratings possibly at both of the schools. He was then asked to teach master classes.
