Welcome to Worfdog - All About German Shepherd Dogs
Worfdog is a lens about German Shepherd Dogs, which in my personal opinion are some of the greatest dogs in the world. I'm not an expert on dogs by any means, this is just my personal view.
I've owned two German Shepherd Dogs, the first one Worf, who is pictured here, was my first. Unfortunately he was taken from my family and I in his eleventh year of life. This was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make, but in the end it came down to what was best for him.
He was large for a German Shepherd, weighing in at 147 pounds.
Now we own Bremen, a two year old who we brought into our family as a puppy. While not as large as Worf, he is still a good sized dog, weighing in at around 90 pounds.
As a breed German Shepherds are extremely intelligent dogs that are highly trainable with a very obvious protective demeanor. They are patient, watchful dogs, that want only to be part of a loving family. In return they create a bond with you that can't be beat.

- German Shepherd Dogs, contrary to what you might think, have existed as a breed for only around 120 years.
A Brief History of the German Shepherd Dog
Back in 1889 Captain Max von Stephanitz was attending a dog show in Karlruhe, Germany. During the show he saw a medium sized wolf like dog that piqued his curiosity. He bought the dog, named him Horand von Grafath and the first registered German Shepherd came into being.
With this new breed of dog Captain von Stephanitz became known as the "Father of the German Shepherd". Soon after he wrote The German Shepherd Dog in Word and Picture the first book about the breed. He also was the first president of the first club for this remarkable breed.
These dogs were first used as herding dogs, working the farms and pastured of rural Germany. When the industrial revolution began their proponents took the opportunity to adapt them to working in other environments, where their natural intelligence and ability to do even the most difficult of jobs was quickly seen.
With the coming of the two world wars the German Shepherd Dog was pressed into service by both sides as messenger dogs, carrying supplies, tracking, and of course guard dogs. They served with distinction and their popularity grew as returning service men told of their loyalty and bravery. Since then the German Shepherd has been pushed into service in many roles, probably more than any other breed in history.
With the end of World War II the German and North American lines of the breed separated and two distinct versions of the same breed appeared. For the most part the two lines are very similar with just slight differences in their structure, movement, and style. There is some cross-breeding between the two sides but overall the two types are kept separate.
No matter where you get your German Shepherd Dog, he or she is descended from that original dog that captivated Captain von Stephanitz all those years ago.

Training a German Shepherd Dog
One of this breeds most endearing qualities is its intelligence. This intelligence needs a channel or they will suffer from boredom, which in a dog can lead to destructive behavior. And in a dog with the size and power of a German Shepherd destructive behavior is not good because there is not much they cannot chew or tear up. Proper training will bring out the best in these dogs, creating a life-long bond that is hard to find with other breeds of dogs.
If you want a properly trained German Shepherd then Zone Training Your German Shepherd is for you. This training method is specific to German Shepherds and uses methods espoused by professional trainers. Using the methods outlined in this downloadable e-book your German Shepherd will become the well behaved obedient dog you've always wanted.
Zone Training Your German Shepherd will give you the tools to properly train your German Shepherd Dog and create a life long bond.
Why is this important?
Because it's training methods are specific to the German Shepherd breed. No two breeds of dog are the same and the training required to bring out the best in your German Shepherd is not the same as say the training needed by a Chihuahua.
