Working for Others Just Doesn't Work for Me
Bail Out...Work for Yourself?
Whazzat? Work for yourself? Are you crazy? You are lucky to have a job at all and here you are dreaming of bailing out and going on your own dime! You have the itch and you sense a million opportunities that will not happen as long as you're working for someone else.
Sounds familiar? What else have we not heard? Yes, successful Cubicle dweller, maybe it's time to get out of the cell and see what's out there.
I was just talking to a friend who finally made the leap. For the first time, she said working for herself opened a Star Port on a new universe. She thought all the time that employment was the way to go. While living in that cubicle, she thought she was super successful as she was earning more than many around her and that gave her security. She was getting praises from management, sent to travel and to attend workshops. She thought she was BIG. But she was only big when she looked down the ladder. She had never looked up before to see the distance she could reach if she stretched on her own.
Tired of corporate work politics?
Petty jealousies in a work office?
My friend did not get tired of office politics. She became the victim of petty jealousies. Yes, my friend was getting to the top. She has placed the company on the national map as she writes well, too. One day, a jealous boss moved her to a menial job that only involved checking on broken chairs and tables. She was told, it was management's prerogative!
The jealous boss went even further to push her out by asking other staff to accuse her of wrong doing which when investigated by the company, was declared a no case. My friend wanted to sue for constructive dismissal but saw that she would just be more and more unhappy when others owned her life.
For her, this was the wake up call to get out of that job and she was grateful that her boss just pushed her. She took a leave, took some steps to try out some ideas, and never looked back. She has never been happier in her life as she keeps seeing more opportunities to pursue.
Wouldn't you love to work for yourself?
Here's a book to start you working for yourself
Sometimes, we are choke-chained from pursuing our dreams by our ignorance. We just don't know what is out there. I knew that a sea change was coming when the internet first arrived and at that time, I started taking courses on everything web related that I could fit in my schedule. I was working in a College then and I could take these courses for free. But scanner that I am, I abandoned it when something else took my fancy. Last year (10 years later), I took hold of my scanner self and once again focused this on the web. That was when I found Squidoo which is now challenging me to learn new web tools. So, here I am becoming a squidophile.
Maybe, for you it may not be the web.>

Transitions: Making Sense of Life's Changes, Revised 25th Anniversary Edition
Amazon Price: $7.06 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
All of us go through various transitions in our lives and understanding the process will give us more confidence in going through it. This book is a big help in understanding the phases we go through from the old to the new and how to get a good grip at this experience.
Really Want to Work for Yourself?
Have a Career Transition Strategy

Before you jump out of that cubicle, think carefully. Is this really what you want to do? Is it just anger or tiredness that's driving you or do you really have a dream of your self as your own master? Maybe the friend I talked about is a different person from you. Take a good look first at your situation. Are you in a position to take the lunge to self-employment? Do you have the resources to do it? More importantly, do you have the passion for it?
Maybe, you enjoy being with people and working with them. Maybe you are the type of person who needs direction from somebody else to do a job. Maybe, you need the regular income from a regular employment and, right now, you just can't take the risk. There are many things you need to consider before you go for those attractive opportunities out there. Be realistic.
Why not have a transition strategy? Take a leave from your job and find out if working for yourself gives you the advantage. Find out if this is the working life you want. Find out if you will be able to sustain it. Nowadays, you don't even have to take a leave. You can start an online business without leaving your job. Try Squidoo, CafePress, Etsy, ebay, or Zazzle. Create a transition path that will lessen the negative impact of the transition from your current situation. Don't burn your boats on the beach.
Design your work transition strategy
Explore possibilities in your current job
Okay, you are in a job and you need the money right now. Maybe, you have the dream but don't have the practical skills and knowledge. These are not limits to your possibilities. Today's work places are more open to explore alternatives for their employees. Design your strategy and present a plan to your manager. Before you do this, make sure you are a valued employee. If you have a decade of grumpy slacking behind you, boost your performance first. When you add value, you can easily leverage this for options to allow you to test out living your dream or build a skill set to achieve them.

Dream of working on your own?
Apprentice first

Dream of working on your own often involves starting a business? The best transition is to work in that business first. Find a shop that meets your mark and ask if they will take you on as an apprentice. My niece is apprenticing at Toyota for two years so she can open her own car service business.
Want to open a flower shop? Go work for a flower shop. Even if you work for free, you will quickly get a sense of the business by just being there observing everything. Some small businesses are reluctant to do this because you are going to be their competition. Go to a shop far from you. Learn about location, sources of supplies, caring for supplies, transport and delivery, equipment and sources for these, how to advertise and promote the business, skills needed and all the other tiny things (finance) one has to consider when starting and owning a business. Do you enjoy the experience? Does it engage you? Does it make you want to wake up in the morning and look forward to a great day?

Do you plan to start a business?
A good way to work for yourself
See where your work path leads you
Surprise yourself
There are so many books to help you sharpen your focus or shift from black and white to a technicolur dream. Sometimes, the best idea is to just trust your intuition, make a decision and follow the path. You can adjust and re-direct once you have momentum. Overcoming the inertia is the first big challenge. But, today, this is not so difficult with all the help we can get. Yet, our whole orientation of always being sensible and responsible holds us back. We plan every step. Sometimes, to find our path, we have to let go of some things we think are of value. Let go.
Before you work for yourself
Do an in-depth career assessment
If you are still not sure of what you want to do, go for career assessment. Sometimes, even when you are sure, that may not yet be the work you really want to do. You just think that's what you want , but it's not yet. If you can get professional help, that will be useful. If not, there are books that will help you do this. Here are some that may help:
What do you really like doing?
Find this out before you work for yourself

What do you really like doing? When you're at work, when you're at home and especially in your spare time, what makes hours seem like minutes? What makes you wake up early? What makes you get excited? What's your passion?
If you can't get a handle on this one, time to get help. There are many career assessment books you can read or software you can use and there are many eager coaches to help you out.
The key is to spend time rediscovering yourself. Getting to know what excites you, what gets you out of your addiction to squidoo. I just found myself talking about possible businesses to young women in Cambodia last weekend. I just felt transformed. I was so alive that my husband had to take my picture. Afterwards, I helped several others with ideas on what businesses they can start and they have taken the step in developing their products. In fact, they have already made a few sale. This, they did without leaving their jobs. These moments clarified to me what I really enjoy doing. I also remember the times in the past when I did this and how alive and happy I was then.
What is it that you really like doing?

Is working for yourself a long time dream
Make your Dream Come True
Where Lies your Passion?
There Lies your Work Path

To find your passion, identify the things you love to do when you have free time. What draws you when you are free? Is it something that you will do even if you are not paid because you enjoy it so much and you truly believe in it? If you put your energy into what you love doing, money will follow. So, don't worry about the money. Focus on what you love doing.
Look back as far as you can remember and list the things you immensely enjoyed doing. Pick out the thread that flows in all these things you enjoyed. This will further clue you in.
Sometimes, it is not easy for those who like to start a million things at the same time. The happy chaos characters! I love being in a big room with a big table where I can just drop what I'm doing and flit from one thing to the other as ideas come to mind. I can do beads, write a report on my computer, start a painting project, work the stock market. It's fantastic.
Still, there is a need to focus. When you want quality work, you need full focus to come up with something you can attach your name to or be associated with. So, explore and then focus. Just keep at whatever you have started and things will continue to unfold. What is pathetic is to see people frozen in inactivity because they don't yet know what they want to do. What a waste!
The key is when you do something you truly enjoy, you get energized. With more energy, you spiral upwards to more things. So get a hold of that passion. But do not let your not knowing stop you from doing something. Take the steps and as you do this, things get clearer.
To start you to work for yourself
Cool gadgets to have
Gadgets are all over the place now to help you succeed in working for yourself. Phones now are GPS as well. Everything can be uploaded and with video calls you can easily see the progress of whatever you are developing or constructing. My sister and brother in law are travelling with their son and his girlfriend. They have a great bonding experience with me and my husband, too. With these technologies, not only can they easily follow what is happening in their business, their employees are enjoying their travels, too, as they upload the pictures of places we have visited. My sister used to be technophobic but other values pushed her to learn new skills. Many of these gadgets are very user friendly so learn how to use them and enhance your life.
A Single Work Path?
Or Multiple paths?
I just came across a book by the New York Times best selling author, Barbara Sher. Thank you Barbara. All my life I have envied people who from an early age have their dreams clearly identified. I enrolled in university not knowing what I wanted so I went for engineering, where most of my close friends went. After a semester, I explored other things. Subsequently, I bailed out of many commitments to endlessly explore, only to reach almost 60 and still not clear about what I really want. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy many things and can truly focus in many of them. I am also good at them as I have the discipline to learn what I get my hands into. But I always felt guilty or incomplete because I just could not choose. I love doing different things at the same time. Then, Barbara clarified this for me. I am a scanner. Scanners posses a unique type of mind that scans the horizon, eager to explore everything they see and pursue many areas rather than a single point of interest. If you know you are this, you can train yourself to focus. As Malcolm Gladwell said, you need 1,000 hours to learn a skill but you need 10,000 hours to master it.
The point is know yourself. Listen to your inner self. That is your guide and if you follow it faithfully, you will achieve your own unique mission. It will not be the same as the other person because you are different. So be a scanner but listen to your own inner guide.
I Could Do Anything if I Only Knew What it Was
Find out what works for you
For some people, it is easy to focus. They easily identify the particular thing they want to do in life. For some, and that includes me, I like dabbing into things and enjoy this, too. Immensely, indeed! But unless you have a trust fund, you need to feed yourself first. But this is next to impossible for people whom Barbara Sher refers to as scanners. If you are one, read one of these books before going off into something new again.

Working for one's self is not for everyone
Is it for you?

Before you jump out of that rat race, think. Is working for yourself the path for you? Some of us are cut out to be self-employed while others can easily flourish in the corporate world not only being employed but successfully stepping up the corporate ladder. And, enjoying as well the competition and glamour of being part of a big corporation.
While working for yourself promises great rewards, there are many challenges you need to conquer. You need to have a passion to create, to commit a thousand mistakes and still keep going. The key is create. The work you enjoy does not just come. You create it.
But it is more than just creating. It is going beyond your comfort zone. It is often doing what we fear most doing. As my friend often says, if you can't travel to risk, you sure can't get to success.
There are many opportunities around but you need to explore the ones out there that match your own talents and the things you enjoy doing. Because when you enjoy doing it, it is not work, it is more play and who does not want to play?

Working for yourself requires courage
The Courage to Accept Failure

Yes, failure is part of the process of developing something. It is negative but negative spaces only serve to highlight the positive. Failures hold the seeds of success. It is a learning moment that makes us move on with more wisdom and confidence. In fact, many educators now are saying we should be rewarding failures. Our education systems does not allow mistakes so kids just follow and not try out things on their own.
When you start to work for yourself, know that everything is uncertain. These are the challenges you need to work out and as you do this you move towards greater success. When you give up as many do, then you do not take the seeds of success in your failures and let these grow.
Organize your work station
Now that you work for yourself, you are your clean up staff and office assistant
When you work for yourself, your work station is where you spend most of your time. Often, because my work station is a mess, I spend so much time just looking for items I want to use. It is important to be well organized. Clear out the unnecessary things for your work so you can concentrate better and become more productive.
Your Skills Portfolio
Do you have what it takes to work for yourself?
When you are able to pinpoint the area you want to pursue, assess your current skills and see how you can leverage these towards self employment. Are you confident that your talents and skills can be offered as an attractive option for businesses? Do you have the talent and skills to create new products to respond to the demands of the marketplace? Your service or product must get the attention of the market. You must offer quality. You must have the skills to convince strangers not just Mom and Dad.
To start, you may need new skills. Learn them. Some of your skills may need upgrading. Invest the time and energy. You will not regret it. You might be able to learn the skills with the help of your current employer. Better still, you might be able to convince your current employer to become your client. I know of a friend who signed a two year consulting contract with his employer before he got out. These two years gave him time to build his business on an assured fee.

Facilitate working for yourself and inspire you as well
Working for yourself or for someone else?
Which makes you happier?
If you are like me, part of you will always say that regular employment is better. Wherever you go, it is the same politics. You can never have that much satisfaction wherever you are. But you can shuffle by and just do your regular work and when retirement comes, maybe then have some fun.
On the other hand, a bigger part of me says, this is your chance. You can do this. You are better off working for yourself. Just sacrifice a little first, work hard and think of having your own freedom with no boss to constantly please. You do it all but for yourself. The politics are in your head, not in the next cubicle. Then, as you progress, you can free up time for yourself by outsourcing the work to others. You can then live a life.
You, what do you think? Is it better to be employed by someone or be self employed?

I considered at one time to make the jump, but I think it truly depends on the circumstances in your life. It goes without saying, if you have no to little debt, or if you are lucky to have receive a great severance package from your company and or have a great biz niche idea, then its worth making the jump. Outside of these circumstances as well as already being financially independent, then job security is the name of the game.

I always worked for other people years ago, until I had to give up work to be a full time care giver for my husband, but now in a way I do work for on Zazzle and selling Stock phorography, but all proceeds to charity as I'm retired. I don't think what I earn online would ever keep food on on the table and the rent paid, but it well worth it!
Working for other people is less responsibility I feel, but in the past, if I had found a way of working for myself, I might have tried that too!

Why I Work for Myself
My Five Top Reasons
These are not all the reasons, just my own top five. As you can see, freedom is really the core of why I decided to work for myself. I remembered whining each time I had to work for someone. You are welcome to give us your own reasons. To add, write them in the guest book.
- 1Freedom to work anywhere.
- 2More control of my work time
- 3Everything I earn comes to me
- 4I can explore whatever I want
- 5I can be more productive and have time for what I like to do
1. Freedom to work the way I want to
They key is freedom

The freedom to work anywhere, at my own pace, my own time, my own favorite place and the way I want to go about it. It is summer now in Canada. Here`s a spot waiting just for you.
Imagine yourself sitting in your favorite corner of your garden with your favorite blend of coffee or tea researching freely on your computer without constantly checking your back for someone who might report you to your boss because you probably were viewing the squidoo lenses of your friend or another friend's pictures on facebook. That is what I am doing now. I have two laptops in front of me and several sites constantly grabbing my attention. I love it.
2. Control of my work time
The key word is control
I am close to my kitchen so I can prepare dinner at the same time. I don't have to sit in my cubicle in an office, wishing the traffic will not be so bad so I will have enough time to cook a good dinner when I get home. I can just stand up and cut some vegetables when I get tired sitting in front of my computer. I can get up and watch Martha Stewart or Oprah (maybe not) on television. I can go out and say hello to my plants. I have control of my time. Mind you, this does not mean I don't work hard. I work much harder.
3. Everything from my work comes to me
Incentive to work harder
Y es, I work much harder because I know everything I earn goes to MOI. I am making revenue and profit for MOI. This might sound selfish it is making me work harder. I just love earning that money and have the freedom to do how I want it allocated. I share so much of what I earn to those who are disadvantaged. So think of how much good you can bring to many lives. When your business succeeds, you can employ more people. Add to that employment numbers!
4. I can explore whatever I want
My creative potential is put to work
I I can choose challenging projects to broaden my experience and make me a more open and knowledgeable person. That is what my husband does now. He only accepts projects that pushes him to learn new things. I can be very creative because I can explore as much as I want whatever project I do. I can use my energy to think out ideas for the business or the project with only the end user or the clients in mind and not someone else who might not be happy with whatever ideas I have. I get feedback, too. But from people I respect and not from someone imposed on me. Wow. Am I really this individualistic? Arrogant, perhaps? Maybe, but I now use my energy for constructive things and not for unnecessary worries, office politics and competition.
5. I can be more productive
And have time for other things I like to do
I can be more productive. There are few disruptions. Then, I can spend more time with my friends when I have finished my work earlier. I can do things I like to do. Sometimes, I finish a whole day's work in a few hours. Four hours of uninterrupted, productive work is worth a day. I can do more or enjoy the rest of the day. Or have a massage, go shopping, read a new novel, or do something for others. Or, spend the whole day on squidoo. I can live a more balanced life. What more can I ask for?

Work for yourself obstacles
What is in it for you?
We have all the right reasons to work for ourselves. But, we hesitate to start. Why? The obstacles stop us. There are many, some maybe self-imposed but some are very real. Not all of us have the luxury of having the support we need to start. But you know what? Many people have the support and don't make it. And many more don't have any form of support and still make do. Some are even more driven because they are hungry. Those who are not hungry, don't try very hard. It is different for each one, too. What may be a major obstacle for you, may not even be a factor for another. Let's take a look at these obstacles.

Challenges that often discourage those working for themselves
Working for yourself makes you handle most things on your own
Many are the joys and gains of self-employment but we cannot deny the challenges that most work for your selfers have to face. The first few years are often so full of mountains to climb that many self-starters give up. But if you take these as just another hill to climb, and just work your way over the top or slip around, you will find these not as overwhelming as when you first looked at them. There is often help you can find easily. Outsource those you do not enjoy doing or are really bad at like book keeping/taxes, answering phones, delivery or whatever those things that take time away from your core business.
Sometimes, the temptation is to learn to do everything. It may take so much of your time that there is nothing left for growing your business. Leave those things that are not the core of your business to outsourced help. Focus on climbable mountains and head up.

My Top 5 Challenges
To working for self
- Taxes and insurance
- Self discipline
- Status as a self-employed
- Distractions
- Loneliness
1. Taxes and Insurance
Dealing with paper work
Yes, when you start and only learning, you will have many surprises. One surprise is when the tax deadline comes and you are faced with a big sum you have to fork out from your own pocket. Most start ups that have a weak bankroll drop off the cliff here. Make sure you can cover your first tax bill from savings BEFORE you start up the business! Focus on receivables. Many countries encourage small start ups to do quarterly payments to make it easier for those who have to pay all of the taxes and insurance for themselves. Quarterly deposits help and you can arrange with your bank to have these deducted from your account so you do not forget and have to pay interest for late payment.
While you have to do this on your own now, you are allowed to deduct some of your expenses from your taxable income. Read up on this or ask an expert to run you through the requirements. One cardinal rule to follow is keep your receipts for everything and let people who know do your accounts and taxes. This will save you more time to do what you are good at. But if you have to do it, there is software you can use and once you have set up all these accounts, the rest will just be easy.
When you are self-employed, don't take your insurance for granted. This might cost you more so get advice on this one before you start. If you have a good family package where you work, you might reconsider. Better still, if one spouse has family coverage, then you do not have to worry. But you need to give this some attention.

2. Self-discipline
Uninterrupted work
When you own your time, the temptations are plenty. In full time employment, you still get the same salary even though you spend most of your time in taking care of your social networks. Here, this will cost you baby.
I usually wake up early and start working. Four hours of uninterrupted work is a day's work really. So if you start early, by the time your kids or guests or many of your friends call, you have done already a day's work. Some work late at night depending on your family demands. Others are lucky to devote a whole day as their kids are in school or there are no kids to talk about.
Prepare a schedule that you will find easy to do and start at that. Give in to temptation only when you have done your day's work. The joy is you are free to schedule your work time. You are your own boss now. Act like one.
Most self-employed do the things they enjoy doing so it is not work. They are happy to spend all their time for it. There are aspects of self-employment you might find difficult or boring. Pass this on to someone who will do this for you at a minimal cost. There are companies now who will provide these services.
3. Ambiguity in Status
Position yourself
Sometimes you find yourself hemming and hawing when asked about what you do. Yes, you can't say you work with such and such a company. And when you say you are a work-at home or self employed person, you don't really count. The banks will consider you high risk. So unfair for the self-employed. But there is no use fretting over those banks that failed anyway. Your best revenge is: position yourself.
Define in one sentence what you do and when asked, take this as your marketing moment. Time to market yourself or your product. Be direct and clear so people can immediately relate to what you claim. Define your self up, not as a casual labourer between loads of washing. Don't go around explaining that you work at home and blah, blah, blah. Just go straight to what you do. Have a card and give this to them. Have a professional image and craft that image very well. Practice delivering it in front of the mirror. Even record your voice until you exude confidence and ease at who you are.
Is this what working for yourself brings?
Working for yourself often projects an image of ambivalence
4. Distractions
Keep a time schedule
Often, when crises hit the extended family of the self-employed, guess who gets to provide help? The self-employed. You end up driving so and so to the hockey practice, picking up a gift for your mother-in-law or going with your sister to the doctor. The requests come from many quarters and although each one asks for a favour only once a week, when you have a big extended family, your week is toast and your work suffers.
Some have an office outside of the house to avoid these distractions and keep a time schedule at the office. But for many start ups, the office is at home, they close their doors during work time and family members understand this.
On the other hand, this is the joy of working for yourself. You are able to respond to family needs more easily. So, why no do the errand happily and enjoy this as a break from your work. Remember, the more you give, more comes back to you.
Stick to a schedule from the very beginning so that the family will not have time to get used to your being there, available at their whim.
Distractions of many self employed
When you work for yourself, you do your own schedule
5. Loneliness
Network and become part of something
Many self-employed miss the office chit chat around the water fountain or the photo copier. There is always company in an office and things happen all around you so you never feel alone. Being alone the whole day in your house may not be attractive to many. Of course, there are always coffee places to hang around, but sometimes, your former friends in the office talk about events that take place there and you no longer vibrate with. And what is there for you to talk about? Maybe, some self-employed have to meet clients so this is fine but it is different to be with colleagues who have worked for some time with each other.
Some deal with this by going to conferences in their disciplines. Others, become part of an organization around their own service or product. Have a network with whom you can bounce ideas, share know how or problems. New social networks are now in place to get you more involved so check it out and become part of something. These networks can also help market your business. Caution: do not let facebook, twitter and the like take over your work life or you won't have one!
Lots of challenges to working for yourself?
Lots of Help, too

To succeed in working for yourself
Self-discipline is very important
Yes, have an inflexible schedule when you are just starting. You are not free at these hours for any requests. Once you have established this routine, people will respect it. Four full hours of uninterrupted work is usually equivalent to a day's work in the office. For some people in the office, it's the equivalent of a week's work. You will realize though that if you're serious about working for yourself, you'll spend more hours than just 4. In fact, almost all of your hours. When you find you are easily distracted, go and work in an office. Working for yourself will engage you fully when it is what you truly desire.
Organize your work
Make working for yourself easier with these tools
Want to work for yourself? Time to organize your workplace. First, choose a work station and organize it well so you save time and can focus more on producing and not forever looking for odds and ends each time you need them. Smart phones will be helpful especially now when it seems to be replacing the lap tops in a hurry.
Lifestyle Redesign
Try this
I first read about lifestyle redesign from Timothy Ferris book, The 4 Hour Work Week. It blew some of my mantras around working for yourself. The end is a life not work. So as you progress in your working for yourself, see the areas that you can redesign so you can enjoy life more. We opt to work for ourselves so we can do whatever we like. Often, we cannot because all our time is consumed by the business. And we say, well, we enjoy doing it. Yes, but there are other things in life you need to explore and enjoy.
Recently, I find myself resenting having guests or going out with my friends because I just have to revise that lens or write another. I get stressed and tense when someone disturbs my squidooing. I realize this calls for a major assessment. There are many ways we can do this redesign. First, have more realistic goals. Then, assess the things you do in your business. Identify the ones only you can do. The others, try to outsource. But of the things only you can do, assess where to spend more time and energy on. Look at the ones that consume only 20% of what you can offer but give back 80% profit or results. Focus on these. And the rest of the time... LIVE.

Gadgets and accessories for your gadgets
Make working for yourself easier
This weekend I have seen how gadgets can save time for you. While I was struggling with my netbook, my sister and my nephew were already calling using skype in their smart phones which they can easily carry with them as we go through our tour of Siem Reap. I had to leave my netbook in the hotel as it is heavy to carry while their i-phones fit in very well their small purses and are so light you don`t mind having them with you all the time. Of course, it depends on what your business is. This will determine the gadgets you need.
Believe That You Can...Get the Vision
Working for yourself has its rewards

The transition from a regular job to self fulfilling self employment requires more than resources and sweat equity. It requires strength in character. Strength in character enables one to go for it when the trying becomes messy.
The road to being your own boss is not a clear open highway. You need more guts to take turns that could become dead ends or bogs or deserts. Whatever it may be, for those who believe they can, the dead ends, the bogs and the deserts all become new opportunities. Yohoooo, they exclaim and they're off and going. Small failures can lead to huge triumphs as experience grows. Horatio Alger stories may be trite, but so many are TRUE!
Okay, some people just have the knack for this. Not to worry. For many of us, we build it one success at a time.
Betsy Fry
"If you lose your job, don't be cowed by it," she declares. "People are more afraid than they need to be. I stepped off a cliff into my new company, but in the end, I hit the ground running, because I built on what I already knew how to do."
Seniors Creating Wealth
Working for yourself is the answer
The old mind set is if someone is 65, they're going to retire early and stop spending money and doing things.
Well, that's not the world anymore.
I totally agree with Betsy Fry when I read this in credit.com. Especially when seniors retire early and live longer. Chances are many seniors cannot live just on their pension. Taxes and insurance are up and so are health care and food. Thank goodness there is squidoo, a mobile business platform that can provide us with multiple streams of income. The need to earn more sadly faces us seniors.
Of course, how much is enough? We can live simply but we all want to live well especially when we now have the time for all the things we want to do.

Tools you might enjoy
Support your effort
Having the tools you need is important when you start working for yourself. I bought my netbook two years ago and it has made travel easy for my husband and I. Instead of carrying the laptop, we just bring our netbook as it takes care of most of the things we need. We bring along our hard disk for some files we might need. I can easily place the netbook in my purse making it easy for check-ins at airports. I chose the one that has a longer battery time so I don't have to plug it in several times.
Notes on working for yourself
First, make sure you have enough to live on in the months when you are just starting. You will miss in the beginning, unless you have a working transiton strategy in place, the regular bi-weekly payouts. When you work for yourself, there is none of that unless you create it.
Self Employment Income
Can you live on your self employment income?
Many people depend on self-employment income to live on. From your experience, is this feasible? I have to admit that my July and August earnings on squidoo were a measly $1.43 and $1.33. But I did not do much. Well, now, the earnings have gone up to double digits as I am learning how to go about it.
However, as an online investor, I can say I can comfortably live on my income.
Investing: How I earn my money
And enjoy doing the things I love
Because we have a mobile lifestyle, I have to learn how to earn money through a mobile platform. I was lucky because I started investing the moment I got my first pay cheque which came later in life for me. That was when I was 40. I went to the bank and opened an investment account. Little did I know that when we stopped our regular jobs and went for consulting contracts in other countries, this would become very handy. More so, when online investing started. Years have disciplined me and taught me valuable lessons that now, investing is allowing me to do what I like.
I share with you what I have personally learned.

- Really thorough article, I really enjoyed reading it. Right now my main job is mom to my 7 kids, but I dabble in Squidoo writing and have made a bit of money.

- I can see why this lens has received so many blessings. Very well done. There are just some people that do better working for themselves and they are good at it. I appreciate this article.

- I had worked on different project for other people. A few years ago I decided to start on my own and with a freind, we started our own company. Even when it still growing it is easier and enjoy it way more. Also with my phtography i have been working on my own. I have my own time, and can decide what I want to do and when :) definately I wouldn't work for an employer again.

- Wow, this is one of the most thorough and comprehensive lenses I have ever seen, and I have viewed a LOT of Squidoo lenses over the years. Many have published in this them of 'work for yourself' or 'make money online' and yet this one blows them all out of the water. No surprise that it has received so many blessing, very well-earned, and I'll be proud to add one more! Excellent content and very well-formatted, too!

Why I am passionate about working for one's self
A bit about me
AESTA is our consulting company. My husband and I formed this in 1997 when we started working as consultants on various international projects and until today, we have not stopped. The contracts just keep coming.

Lenses on investment
Yes, making money or the knack for making money is strategic to working for yourself. That is, of course, if you want to succeed in it. I want to promote these lenses on investment. I have had years of investing. In the past, I have to give up consultancies to be with my husband in his contracts. Otherwise, we will seldom see each other and that is not the life we have chosen. So I have to learn how to earn what I would ordinarily earn as a consultant, perhaps, better. This is how I learned how to invest. And this is what I want to share with you in these lenses.
For those of you who are working on your own and have to earn your keep, you may consider learning about investment.
